Marula PlatinumMarula Platinum Limited(Marula) is 73% ownedby Implats and is one of the first operations tohave been developed on the relativelyunder-exploited eastern limb of the BushveldComplex in South Africa. It is located in theLimpopo Province, some 50 kilometres north ofBurgersfort. In FY2010 the operation produced70,100 ounces of platinum in concentrate. The operation comprises two on-reef declineshafts, one off-reef conventional decline and ametallurgical plant. Annual steady-state productionof 100,000 ounces of platinum in concentrate isanticipated over the next three years.NBOTSWANARustenburgBushveldComplexJohannesburgSOUTH AFRICAMarulaHISTORYPlatinum was first discovered in the area byrenowned explorer Hans Merensky on the nearbyfarm Maandagshoek (now Modikwa Platinum) inthe 1920’s. In June 1998 Implats entered into anarrangement to acquire the Winnaarshoek propertyfrom Platexco, a Canadian based company. The mineral rights to portions of the adjacent farmsof Clapham and Forest Hill and a sub-lease toDriekop were subsequently acquired from AngloPlatinum in exchange for Hendriksplaats (part ofModikwa Platinum) so consolidating the Marulamine area. The exploration programme was thenexpanded and some 750 surface boreholes weredrilled. The establishment and development of themine, requiring considerable investment from Implatsin both infrastructure and environmental protectionmeasures, commenced in October 2002.2

MININGCurrent mining activities target theUG2 Reef only which is accessedvia two declines, Clapham andDriekop, which are situated1.3 kilometres apart and willeventually reach depths of770 metres. The declines weresunk on-reef from the outcrop ata minor dip of 9.5 degrees, each with three portal entries.Marula is currently convertingto conventional breast miningas the initial mine plan utilisingmechanised bord-and-pillartechniques proved unsuccessfuldue to steeper dips and theunexpected rolling of thereef. Hybrid mining is beingundertaken until the conventionaloperation is fully established.Potential future mining of theMerensky Reef will largely beinfluenced by the market outlook.4
