Frequently Asked Questions
Why has my Clematis produced buds
but they are not opening?
A This is due to a lack of feed, use a high potash feed when watering
(tomato or rosefeed are very good) twice a week from March to
whenever they start to open.
What can I grow Clematis up or through?
A Anything really, trellis, strong wires, other climbing plants (roses
are good companion plants) Obelisks, wigwams, the list is endless.
They can even be trailed across a bed of heathers if you wish!
Can I plant two Clematis together?
A Yes of course, try and make sure they are both in the same pruning
group, as this will make it easier for you when it comes around to
pruning them.
I’ve planted my Clematis following your instructions but they
don’t seem to be growing?
A Plenty of water and feed will be the solution, often people forget to
feed their clematis enough. They are very heavy feeders and enjoy
potash based feeds twice a week from march until may. If they are
still not growing well then try cutting them back again (about half
way) and continue to feed.
My soil is like clay will Clematis survive this?
A you will need to improve your soil greatly with John Innes number 3
or plenty of garden compost, as Clematis do not like to be stood in
water.
My soil is very poor, can I grow Clematis in pots?
A yes, Clematis can definately be grown in pots. They grow really well
in deep pots (at least 18 inches in width and depth) The taller the
Clematis the deeper the pot required. The Boulevard collection are
ideal for pots and have been dubbed the ‘Patio collection’ also in
some books and magazine articles.
