As part <strong>of</strong> her prize,Asta had her new song Escape recorded in Sydney with ARIAwinning producer Greg Wales. The second part <strong>of</strong> Asta’s prize wasa lunchtime concert at Rosny College with top Australian hip-hopgroup Bliss n Eso.On Friday August 24 the Tasmanian Training Awards were held atWrest Point. Rosny College Year 12 student, Brittany-Lee Grice,won the 2012 School-based Apprentice/Trainee <strong>of</strong> the Year award. She isundertaking a school-based traineeship in Certificate III in Aged Careat the Freemasons’ Homes <strong>of</strong> Southern Tasmania as well as studyingsome TQA subjects at Rosny College. Brittany chose to undertakethe school-based traineeship as a pathway to her future career inenrolled nursing. Brittany will represent Tasmania in the AustralianTraining Awards to be held in Melbourne later this year.Our congratulations also go to Rodney Anderson and GrahamGates who were both finalists in the 2012 VET Teacher/Trainer <strong>of</strong> theYear award, and to Jane Allwright and Launceston College teacher,Gaylene Allen who, on behalf <strong>of</strong> the Tasmanian Secondary CollegesRegistered Training Organisation, were finalists in the Small TrainingProvider <strong>of</strong> the Year award.International Science Opportunity for PatrickPatrick Yates travelled to Dublin, Ireland, in July to attend the International YouthScience Forum, having won selection at the National Youth Science Forum in Perthin January. From the PrincipalTerm 2 has been an importanttime for students toconsolidate their learning – inboth academic and vocationalprograms. The mid-yearassessment period providedstudents studying level 3subjects with the opportunityto demonstrate theirknowledge and skills undertest conditions. Much willhave been learned from thatexperience and students needto take the advice and guidancefrom teachers on how they canbest improve their performance by the end <strong>of</strong> the year.Most <strong>of</strong> the students undertaking vocational programs at Rosnyhave been out on work placements during term 2. This is a greatopportunity for them to further develop their employability skillsand attributes in the work environment and also to plan their futurecareer pathways.Year 11 students have been considering their study programs fornext year and discussing possible pathways and subject choices withtheir teachers. The full range <strong>of</strong> subjects and programs that areavailable at Rosny are listed in Your Guide to 2013. Students will needto complete their enrolments at college before the end <strong>of</strong> October.This year about 100 students have opted to enrol in vocationaltraining programs at the Polytechnic and combine this with TQAsubjects at Rosny. Some students also combine a School BasedTraineeship with their studies at college. This provides students withan opportunity to continue to learn and gain a qualification whilebeing employed.Rosny College students have continued to excel across a range <strong>of</strong>subject areas and their stories are highlighted in this newsletter.Some students have gained individual success in their particular fieldand this has resulted in them receiving wonderful opportunitiesto travel interstate and overseas to further their knowledge andexperience.Term 2 was most eventful for Rosny College. In addition to theCareers Expo, a camp for the international students, music anddrama performances and outdoor education excursions, we had theexcitement <strong>of</strong> Asta Binnie winning the National Triple J Unearthed Highcompetition which resulted in a concert for our students with Astaand hip-hop band Bliss n Eso performing in the common room.I am delighted to welcome Mr Darryl Moir who has joined us asPrincipal at Rosny College. Darryl comes to us as an experiencededucator and Principal – most recently at New Town High School. Iwould like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and studentsfor their support and cooperation during my time as Acting Principalthis year.Heather Whittington • Acting Principal, Terms 1 and 2End-<strong>of</strong>-Year AssessmentsIntroducing RosnyCollege’s newPrincipal - Darryl MoirI am excited about taking up the role<strong>of</strong> Principal at Rosny College followingsix enjoyable years as principal <strong>of</strong>New Town High. As my own childrenattended Rosny, I know firsthand <strong>of</strong>the excellent teaching, support andopportunity that the College providesall <strong>of</strong> our students.My previous experience has also included Principal <strong>of</strong> New NorfolkHigh, HR Manager, Principal Consultant and Assistant Superintendent.In many <strong>of</strong> these roles I have been fortunate to have had aclose connection with Rosny, enabling me to see the wonderfulachievements <strong>of</strong> current and former students in a diverse variety <strong>of</strong>fields, as well as meet many <strong>of</strong> the outstanding staff at the College.Taking up my position at the start <strong>of</strong> Term 3 presents a number <strong>of</strong>challenges, including getting to know one hundred and forty five staffand over twelve hundred students!The end-<strong>of</strong>-year written examinations take place betweenMonday, November 12 and Friday, November 23. In Octoberall students will receive a copy <strong>of</strong> the timetable and a bookletoutlining exam procedures. Students’ final results will beposted to them by the TQA on December 17. Students havethe option <strong>of</strong> receiving these by email (free <strong>of</strong> charge) but theymust fill in the on-line form on the TQA website, preferably byDecember 1st.Members <strong>of</strong> the 2012 Student UnionRosnyStudentUnionThe Rosny CollegeStudent Unionhas been meetingregularly since thebeginning <strong>of</strong> theyear. For a small group it has achieved a lot, as well as contributing tothe greater community. With a focus on raising money for charitiesthrough holding events within the school, the union has supportedorganisations such as The Royal Guide Dogs and The Salvation Army.Firstly they held a successful ‘pancake day’ selling sweet pancakes totheir ravenous peers. Next, a soup day was held, a main course totheir charity fund-raising endeavour. They next hope to sell mini hotdogsto raise money for the local RSPCA shelter. Tasmanian Hospitality AssociationVET in <strong>Schools</strong> Award for ExcellenceVET Tourism student, Paddy Newton, recently won an awardsponsored by the Tasmanian Hospitality Association. Paddy’s prizeis a four-day, all-expensespaidfamiliarisation tour <strong>of</strong>several significant touristproperties around Tasmania.Sarah Pennington from VETHospitality was also a finalistand will participate in aworkshop with Simon Bryantfrom ‘The Cook and the Chef’.Paddy is pictured beingpresented with his award bythe Minister for Tourism andHospitality, Scott Bacon MHA.Classroom ClickersSome Mathematics classes at Rosny College have been using ‘clickers’in the teaching program. A clicker is a handheld voting device. Eachstudent can respond to their teacher’s questions by sending a voteto the teacher’s computer. The clicker’s responses are collated bythe teacher’s computerand, if desired, a graph<strong>of</strong> responses appearsimmediately and is projectedto the screen. Clickers havebeen used for classroomquiz games, for obtaininganonymous feedback andfor making assessments.Teachers say thatclickers improve studentengagement and can add afun element to a lesson.Rosny High Achievers Visit UTASOliver Briggs, AdenCrocker, Simon Glover,Carly Hickman, ErinShaw, Ezara Ortiz, SarahSkromanis, Sarah Cullenenjoying a break at UTAScafeteriaAs part <strong>of</strong> Rosny College High Achievers program a group <strong>of</strong> students had the opportunity to visit UTAS to undertake tours <strong>of</strong> the campus andattend a variety <strong>of</strong> lectures including Ecology, Metaphysical Puzzles, Thermal Engineering, Logic, and Algebra. The students thought the experiencewas worthwhile and it gave them the chance to experience what it is to be a student at UTAS, including enjoying lunch at the Ref.On the road to the state Rock ChallengeRock ChallengeFollowing on from Rosnystock and the Acoustic Challenge, LeoCreighton and Feeding Conor (Sean Delaney, Conor Bellears andSebastian Pasanen), were chosen to represent the college at thestate Rock Challenge. Both acts won their sections in the southernheats and travelled to Launceston on the 16th <strong>of</strong> August to play inthe state final. Feeding Conor shone with an energetic and polishedperformance, and big congratulations to Leo Creighton who wonboth the ‘Off the rock’ and ‘Best songwriter’ awards.Louisa, Patrick and AlisonSelection Honour for Science StudentsThree Rosny students have been selected to attend the 2013National Youth Science Forum in January next year. Louisa Marmionand Patrick Hennessy will attend forum sessions in Canberra whileAlison Hay will travel to Perth, WA, to attend the other forumsession. Congratulations to all three. Acting Principal Heather Whittington opened the showcommenting on the diversity and expressive content <strong>of</strong> thework representing all studio areas, and the important role <strong>of</strong> theexhibition as part <strong>of</strong> the visual art learning program. Art student LeoCreighton entertained the audience by singing and playing the guitarduring the show. It was great to see students with their familiesproudly being photographed with their artwork.Year 12 art students were treated to a special ‘behind the scenes’look at Mona with front <strong>of</strong> house Justin Johnstone and librarianMary Lijnzaad. Students were particularly impressed with thesize <strong>of</strong> the massive lift used to transport the artworks and a tour<strong>of</strong> the ‘organ room’, a stunning function venue which houses amagnificently restored organ <strong>of</strong> National Trust heritage significanceand a ‘hanging garden’ living artwork. They were given insights intothe work undertaken by Mary in the Mona library and the role <strong>of</strong>the exhibition team, before previewing the latest Mona exhibition‘Theatre <strong>of</strong> the World’.The Young Archies Exhibition opened at The Tasmanian School <strong>of</strong>Art on Sunday August 26th with Rosny represented by art studentsAnna Jenkins, Rebecca Whyte, Ash Barnes, Jo Webber and AmeliaFazackerly.Congratulations to Year 12 student Verity Gledhill who was afinalist in the Launceston Church Grammar School’s state-widephotography competition, ‘SNAP’.4Howrah Primary School students learn about pyramid constructionAncient Egypt Comes AliveDuring Term 2 Ancient Civilisations students have worked hard atputting their classroom learning into action, by teaching a group <strong>of</strong>Howrah Primary School students about the design and function <strong>of</strong>tombs in Ancient Egypt. Students were able to select their owndelivery strategy and excellent results were achieved by all.Evatt CompetitionJacqui Lange and Bec Biggsrepresented the USA in therecent Tasmanian round <strong>of</strong> theEvatt Trophy, a mock UnitedNations Security Councilcompetition run by UN YouthAustralia. Former Rosny student, Aaron Moss, acted as co-convenorfor the competition. The Evatt Trophy culminates a year <strong>of</strong> Civicsactivities, highlighted by Rosny student participation in bothstatewide and national UN Youth events. Congratulations to Jacquiand Bec on their involvement as representatives <strong>of</strong> Rosny College.


Giovani Artistiper l’Emilia– Dare di Piu(Young Artistsfor Emilia –giving more)Ben Mascolo has beenstudying at Rosny Collegefor 18 months, but inMay this year his hometown <strong>of</strong> Modena in theItalian province <strong>of</strong> EmiliaRomagna suffered aviolent earthquake, with16 people killed and15,000 made homeless. While Ben was safe in Hobart, he felt isolatedfrom the suffering <strong>of</strong> his family and friends. In an effort to feel part <strong>of</strong>the tragedy, and also to make a positive contribution, Ben and some<strong>of</strong> his friends wrote both the words and music for a song aboutthe earthquake - Giovani Artisti per l’Emilia – Dare di Piu’ . Friends inItaly recorded it, put it on Youtube and within a few days it had over100,000 hits! It gained the attention <strong>of</strong> Italian media and was playedby many radio stations, reviewed in newspapers and streamed onnational television. Ben has been interviewed a number <strong>of</strong> times byvarious sections <strong>of</strong> the Italian press, all have mentioned that he iscurrently studying in Hobart. Royalties from the song will be used tohelp support the earthquake victims.VET Tourism students in LauncestonVET TourismBen MascoloVET Tourism students from Rosny, Hobart and Claremont Collegestravelled together to Launceston to attend the Tourism IndustryCouncil <strong>of</strong> Tasmania’s annual conference at the Country Club Resort.The group was given a very warm welcome by the chairman <strong>of</strong>the TICT, well-known local tourism entrepreneur Simon Currant.They participated in workshops organised especially for students.The group stayed overnight at the Hotel Grand Chancellor whichincluded a site inspection <strong>of</strong> the property with former Rosny student,Adam Brooks.Volunteers and studentsMonday Lunchtime ESL TutorialsEvery Monday at lunchtime a group <strong>of</strong> volunteers, some <strong>of</strong> whom areretired Rosny College teachers, tutor our ESL students. They helpstudents to improve their English as well as provide subject-specificguidance. We would like to thank them for generously giving theirtime and knowledge. It was agreat way to see what first year lectures would be like.5


Internationalstudents onMaria IslandInternational Student CampOn 2nd and 3rd <strong>of</strong> August, thirty <strong>of</strong> our ESL (English as a Second Language) students spent two wonderful days together at the SpringBeach Youth Convention Centre Camp near Orford. Our trip included a stop at Zoo Doo and Richmond on the way up plus a ferry rideto Maria Island on the way back. The weather was great, so good in fact that some students were brave enough to take to the waves.We cooked together, danced, played table tennis, badminton and eight-ball and shared our stories around the open fire. We are alreadylooking forward to next year.Teacher in IndustryRosanne Browning, our VET HospitalityCoordinator, recently completed a twoweek Teacher in Industry session atWrest Point. This experience enabledRosanne to develop current industryskills directly relevant to the trainingshe is delivering in the Certificate II inHospitality (Kitchen Operations) program at Rosny College. His project,developed during hisStudent DirectedInquiry course, is adevice that cleverlyuses moving magnets torecharge small devicessuch as a mobile phone.Members <strong>of</strong> the Rosny TeamsMaths RelayThis is an annual event run each year by the Tasmanian MathematicalAssociation with the southern section being held again at RosnyCollege. The relay involves students working co-operatively in teamsto solve problems. These require a high degree <strong>of</strong> lateral thinkingskills and the ability to work under pressure.This year the College was represented by two teams in the event.Congratulations go to Lachlan Tidey, James Benson, JohnathonRobertson and Brendan Tildesley in Team A and Liam Callaway,Angelo Bocchino and Paul Thalaivasal in Team B who all performedwell in the event.2013 MusicalRosny College has been granted the rights for thecontemporary rock musical RENT. This remarkable multiaward-winning piece deals with the homeless and disaffected,all finding solace in their differences. It is also a love storythat transcends time and place. RENT had its first stagedreading at New York Theatre Workshop in 1993. It quicklygained popularity <strong>of</strong>f-Broadway, receiving enthusiastic reviews.The New York Times theatre critic Ben Brantley called it an"exhilarating, landmark rock opera" with a "glittering, inventivescore". Rosny College looks forward to presenting thismusical in 2013.6


“Real Mates Don’t Let Mates Drink and Drive”A new campaign against drink-driving was launched at Rosny College on August 6. The campaign,organised by the Road Safety Advisory Council, targets young men aged 17-25 and makes use <strong>of</strong> thesocial media site Facebook. As part <strong>of</strong> the launch, Rosny students created on-line posters using atemplate on the Facebook page. In launching the campaign, council chairman John Gledhill said youngmen are six times more likely than other Tasmanian drivers to be involved in a serious road accident.Rosny students taking part in the launchTeam RosnySki TripDuring the last week <strong>of</strong> second term 65 students and staff took part in the 2012 Mt Hotham trip. Arriving on Sunday afternoon to blue skiesand over two metres <strong>of</strong> snow cover, students were treated to a spectacular introduction to skiing and snowboarding. Blue skies, light winds andexcellent snow made for a great start to the week. Daily lessons and all day on the slopes, interrupted only briefly to refuel in the lodge at lunch,saw skills improve quickly. A quiz night on Thursday then fresh powder on Friday morning put the icing on the cake, so to speak. Exhausted butecstatic students returned to Melbourne on Friday night. Everyone agreed that this was one <strong>of</strong> the best experiences <strong>of</strong> their school careers andmany have started saving for next year’s trip already.Recent Sporting AchievementsMatthew Young, Ashleigh Onaca andJosie Greenwood represented Tasmaniain the inaugural Under-19 Three-on-ThreeAustralian Basketball Championships inSydney. As a result <strong>of</strong> his performance,Matt was selected in a team <strong>of</strong> fourto represent Australia in the WorldChampionships in Spain in September.Rose Bowerman competed in theAustralian National Clubs TrampoliningChampionships held in Brisbane. Rosewon silver in the Women’s level 6Trampoline. Achieving a national rankingas second in Australia is a fantasticachievement for the Year 11 gymnast.Louis Coad and Jack Rust wereselected as members <strong>of</strong> the Tasmanian18 years-and-under team to competeat the National Youth Touch FootballChampionships, in Port Macquarie, NSW,from September 18-22.Louis was also a member <strong>of</strong> theTasmanian team which competed in theAustralian Orienteering Championshipsheld over nine days in September.Emma Newell competed in theAustralian Age Swimming Championshipsin April this year, finishing 4th in the100 metres breaststroke and 5th inthe 200 metres breastroke. Emma alsoreceived a Tasmanian Institute <strong>of</strong> Sportscholarship.Grace Lennox recently captained theUnder-18 Tasmanian women’s basketballteam in Perth (WA), is Tasmanian femalebasketballer <strong>of</strong> the year and has won aTasmanian Institute <strong>of</strong> Sport scholarship.7
