Principal’s Message
Dear Students, Staff, Family and Friends
Principal’s Message
2 1 M A R C H 2 0 1 2
I trust in the kindness of God forever
“God of all peoples in Jesus Christ
You call us from our foolishness to be you children
coming amongst us like a kookaburra singing
the song of a new day.”
We are now in the midst of end of term assessments, TAS Finals and TAS Swimming,
and some deep learning about Edmund Rice Charism to name but a few happenings!
Our Shared Vision
We are a Catholic school community, which means we aim to underpin our values in all
that we do.
We are a community in the tradition of Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers,
who base our decisions on the touchstones of Education as Liberation, Gospel
Spirituality, Inclusiveness, Justice and Solidarity.
We are a community, who strives for excellence in all that we do.
We are a community with a shared vision of searching for ways we can improve our
outcomes and opportunities for students.
We are a community, who cares and strives to be inclusive, providing ongoing pastoral
care and a safe supportive environment for students.
We are a community, who encourages all to achieve their goals overcoming barriers
along the journey.
We are a community, who strives to create leaders and take them to places, which are
beyond their belief.
We are a community, who is preparing students to be fully equipped as a 21 st century
global citizens.
We are a community, where we depend on each other in our roles and work together in
partnership, to achieve with respect, dignity and sense of satisfaction and enjoyment.
We are a community, who encourages full involvement and participation in school life and
society, encouraging active citizenship.
We are a community of learners, with a strong professional base as teachers.
We are a community who cares about others, inclusive of those in challenging
circumstances.
We are a community who acknowledges our Indigenous heritage and Indigenous peoples’
unique relationship with the land.
We are a community who strives to encourage social justice responsibility and action.
Over the last week I have completed a three day Principal’s course conducted by BCE
titled “Leading Learning”. One of the most powerful messages is the importance of
building a Community, and within that, a community with a shared vision fostering and
resourcing a Professional Learning Community. The Principal needs to be a strong leader
who steers this boat with a sense of direction, steadiness, optimism, skill, resourcefulness
especially in swirling currents, and confidence to reach the destination, even when sailing
close to the wind. Gigantic waves may rock the boat, but the Principal and the Leadership
team must do everything to keep up the morale and cement the team to ensure a
successful outcome. We honoured Jessica Watson last week at the College in her
sensational journey and these elements were crucial for her – she said she had a great
team behind her!
So the challenge is how do we do the above?
Are we doing the above?
Are we sitting with this shared vision?
I think the number one is that we do have a strong community – this is the basic building
block!
2
Another example to inspire us during the week was the shared wisdom of Dr Damien Price and his message of the
Edmund Rice Charism.
Br Damien’s Inspiration
Br (Dr) Damien Price is a Christian Brother based in Melbourne. His work is focused around formation of people in
the Edmund Rice Charism. What does Edmund Rice Charism mean? Edmund Rice lived in Ireland in 1800s, was a
wealthy merchant who left it all to set up a school for poor boys and out of that set up a Religious Order of the
Christian Brothers. St Columban’s College was a Christian Brother’s school in Albion in Brisbane, and then was
relocated to Caboolture. So for us, this Charism is like a filter of the gospel message. Edmund Rice was “present” for
those boys. He came as a guest in their lives and walked with them. Br Damien challenged us to think about the
importance of presence and walking with people in our lives and in particular how we do that in a school community.
On Monday, Br Damien worked with student leaders, staff and in the evening with parents from the P & F and
College Board. We were all moved to tears with his touching and emotional stories which wrenched our hearts but
assured us of the value of being there for others.
We thank Br Damien for his enormous energy and deep spirituality, which he shared with us. Some of the students
were so impressed that they told their parents that they had to attend the evening gathering, so they would not miss
Br Damien. We look forward to an ongoing association with Edmund Rice Education Australia in our mandate as an
Edmund Rice Associate School. We express our gratitude to all those who came to the Board/P & F Dinner in the
evening and hope they thoroughly enjoyed it as much as I did!
ALP and LNP Responses to Catholic Education Issues
In this final week of the State election campaign it is timely to read the formal responses to questions posed by the
Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC) to both major political parties. The responses are available on
the QCEC website: www.qcec.catholic.edu.au in both summary and complete forms and I encourage you to
consider them carefully.
Both parties have expressed their understanding and appreciation of the work of Catholic schools in Queensland
and their desire to support that work.
Mike Byrne, Executive Director of QCEC, on behalf of the QCEC and the Parents & Friends Federation, has
expressed his appreciation of the advocacy for Catholic schools undertaken by school and community members in
their local electorates in the lead up to the election.
Early Departure Procedures
☺ Student must bring a note from home explaining early departure and time of collection.
☺ Student must show this note to the teacher when he/she leaves the classroom.
☺ If Parents/Caregivers are unable to collect students in person, please phone and notify the College of the
early departure.
☺ Student should then proceed to the College Office to await collection by parent/caregiver.
☺ Parent/Caregiver should then sign student out on Early Departure Sheet and student should put his/her note in
the PC drawer to explain his/her absences..
It is inappropriate for Office Staff to phone classrooms, thereby disrupting classes and teachers. The PA system
will not be used during lesson times.
Parents/Caregivers please note the following procedures for notification of student absenteeism and late
arrival:
All late arrivals must be phoned in prior to 9am on the day of the late arrival
CARPARKS and DROP OFFS
Please be aware that the Front Carpark is for Staff and Visitor Parking only. We request that students be
dropped off or picked up at the back entrance of the College. We also ask parents/carers who do use the back area
of the college for pickups and drop off to be very mindful of the need to drive with caution given the present
conditions in this area. We also ask parent/carers not to park in the bus turning area at the back of the College as
this presents serious risks to members of our College community.
HERITAGE DAY 2012
The College will be staging the 2012 Walkathon (Walk for Spirit) on Bribie Island as part of a Heritage
be allocated to the College Mission activities.
Thank you for your support.
The tour With Will and Jane to England and back is set to depart on 24 June. Seven students and seven staff will
board the Emirates jet on the way to London via Dubai and thence to points literary, dramatic and historic.
Look out for my emails on the topic and for details of the next meeting to discuss matters of insurance, passports
and so on.
English Tutoring has finished for the term with a good attendance for the last few weeks as students finish assignments
for the term.
Tutoring will resume on the second Wednesday back next term.
Creative Writers and Readers’ Inc are also on hold until second week back next term.
Book of the Week: The Help by Kathryn Stockett is the book of the award winning film of the same name. Compared
to Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, it is the story of a white woman who meets secretly with the black
maids in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962 to write their story of acceptance and rejection in equal measure and often
from the same people. It is set against the background of a growing awareness of Civil Rights in the US and shows
the hope possible in a country which continues to struggle with racial issues.
Chess Club
On Tuesday 13 March, a team of fourteen students, our largest in recent years, travelled to Nundah State School to
participate in the first round of the Queensland Interschools Teams Chess Championships. The students competed
against fellow chess enthusiasts from eight other secondary schools from the northside of Brisbane. Brisbane
Grammar School, Marist Brothers Ashgrove, St Jame’s College, St Joseph’s Nudgee College and Indooroopilly,
Kedron, Murrumba and Everton State High Schools. In all there were eighty students, in twenty-two teams each
comprising of four or fewer players.
As a measure of the growing interest in Chess Club at St Columban’s we shared with St Joseph’s Nudgee College in
having the highest number of players participating in the Secondary Schools Division at this event.
The event was very well organised in the magnificent new multi-purpose centre at Nundah State School. Each
participant played seven games of chess throughout the course of the day, all within an Open Division (Yr 8 to12).
Overall our students equipped themselves quite well. A standout performer was Hayden Ollett from Yr 8, who
managed to win four games and draw one game out of his seven. David Suen managed three wins and one draw,
whilst Blayde Rath, Callum Lethby, Hayden Sands, Callum Lederhouse, Ethan Donovan and Ethan Dollard all
enjoyed three wins.
Our remaining players, comprising Grant Houston, Jayden Harding, Jaiden Tuckwood-Neilsen, Andrew Hall, Anita
Good and Eilish Flagg all enjoyed some level of success through the day.
Of the fourteen players representing St Columban’s in this Chess tournament, only four had participated in the same
event in previous years. Thus this event was a great opportunity for many
of our players to learn about how chess tournaments are conducted
including the use of chess clocks, the role of an arbiter and the etiquette of
shaking hands before and at the conclusion of each game.
The engagement of students throughout the entire day was plain for all to
see, as was the tremendous spirit in which the games were conducted.
The second round of these Championships will be held on the 24 May,
again at Nundah State School. It will be open to other players as well as
those who attended the first round. Any St Columban’s College students
keen to participate need to be regular attendees at the Thursday lunchtime
chess club meetings.
Maher and Teena Power, we will embark on the challenge of again finishing in the top three at TAS swimming next
Wednesday the 28 March.
