Principal’s Message
I trust in the kindness of God forever
“God of all peoples in Jesus Christ
You call us from our foolishness to be you children
Dear Students, Staff, Family and Friends coming amongst us like a kookaburra singing
the song of a new day.”
This week has been full of events with some wonderful outcomes.
Enrolment Information Evening
On Tuesday evening we welcomed nearly 200 people to this event promoting the College and
its ethos and offerings. Ten of our student leaders came along and spoke of one of the areas
of the College which was attractive for them. They acquitted themselves superbly and were the
best advertisement for our holistic and strategic approach. I was impressed with our audience
with at least ten very relevant questions being asked at the end after all our Leadership Team
had presented.
Why come to St Columban's?
• Wonderful choice of challenging progressive opportunities for your son/daughter.
• Strong Catholic values and caring friendly environment.
• Value for your investment.
The College has a fine tradition with its history as a Christian Brothers’ (Edmund Rice) College
dating from 1928 to 1996 at Albion and relocated at Caboolture in 1997. We are now an
Edmund Rice Associate School with a very strong connection to the Edmund Rice Charism
and to our past students. The motto of Spirit Tradition and Community embraces our central
essence and the evidence of its being is in the vibrancy of the student committees, house
spirit, outreach programs, student ministry, parent involvement, staff commitment, and
expansion of the College. Some features of the College include a new Trade Training Centre
with a commercial kitchen, restaurant and hairdressing salon to be completed by the end of
March.
Some Major College Highlights:
• New Multipurpose Centre to be completed by the end of the year.
• 1-1 Laptop school for all staff and students.
• Outstanding Year 12 results with good outcomes for all students.
• School based trainee pathways combined with academic program - over 100 SBT's in
the College.
• Sporting excellence and member of The Associated Schools quality sporting
competition.
• Performing and Visual Arts emphasis with learning and performance options.
• Co Curricular program of breadth and depth including environment, chess, robotics, art
force, college voices, dance troupe.
• Strong debating program and public speaking opportunities - our win at the Regional
Constitutional Convention yesterday is another example of excellence in this area.
• Learning Enhancement Centre providing support and extension to all students.
So enrolment packs are available at the College or you can download from the website
www.stc.qld.edu.au We will be interviewing 12 to 17 March for places for next year.
We will also be taking applications from current Year 4,5 and 6 students in light of the 2015
intake of Year 6 and Year 7 students. Early interviews will be held later and on an ongoing
basis for these students with offerings made. SO PLEASE MAKE YOUR APPLICATIONS
NOW. THIS INCLUDES CURRENT FAMILIES WHO HAVE A SIBLING AT THE COLLEGE.
P & F Welcome BBQ - a Great Success and Wet Welcome!
It was a lovely evening last Friday despite the heavy downpours. Quite a number of families
came along to meet staff and other families. Thank you to the P & F for the BBQ and the
students for the music, and all the student leaders for coming. Well done to our musicians!
STUDENT OF THE MONTH February 2012
Senior
Academic: Kalina Morriss has made an exceptional start to the year in terms of her focus and dedication to her
studies. Her academic results from 2011 reflect a positive attitude and conscientious approach to academic life, alongside
a successful tennis training program.
Sporting: Sam Hicks has been selected in the ARU Gold Squad, it is a development program for the Best 16
and 17 year olds Rugby players in the Brisbane region. He is also a member of Sunshine Coast School Boys Rugby team
as well as playing for the College in the First XI Cricket team.
Cultural: Angie Davies has been singing for quite some time, however is dedicated to contributing back to the
College during her Year 12 year. Angie’s performance at both the Inaugural Mass and Ash Wednesday Liturgy was
inspiring and entertaining.
School Spirit: Travis Schumack. At the recent Yr 8 camp, Travis Schumack displayed wonderful leadership in the
way he interacted with the Yr 8s. The ability to put others at ease, and to challenge themselves to do their best are positive
marks of leadership.
Vocational: Madison Smee is a hardworking, dedicated student in Year 11 Hospitality, who always strives to do
her best in both the classroom and practical environment. Madison always provides support to her peers in the
kitchen. To enhance her preparation for a vocational pathway into the hospitality industry, Madison has started a
Certificate III in Events and a Certificate III in Tourism with Brisbane North Institute of TAFE.
Middle
Academic: Troy Hammond receives this award for an excellent start to the academic year. He is very focused
on his studies, is in-tune with the new work for the year and has an excellent work ethic. Troy consistently makes a positive
contribution to both his Maths and Science classes.
Sporting: Louie Beatty has started the school year with a great involvement in school sport – participated in
the Zone Swimming Carnival on Friday the 17 February and swam well and then backed up to travel to Canterbury for
Volleyball on Saturday and had a good game. A good all round performance.
Cultural: Tom Krohn showed his talents on Year 8 Camp where he made us aware of his natural ability as a
standup comedian. Tom was confident and talented on the camp and we look forward to seeing more of his talents in his
future at St Columban's College.
School Spirit: Bailey Russel overcame his fear of heights and completed the High Ropes course at Mt Tamborine
during the Yr 8 Camp. This ability to face fear and to have a go is the attitude that we encourage at St Columban's
College. The determination that Bailey showed was terrific to see and we commend him for it.
Year 12 Retreat - Reflection and Joy
The Retreat helps Year 12 Students to come to terms with themselves and their future directions. Thank you to all who
contributed to this wonderful time, including Cathy Galvin, Libby Blain, and Troy Hammond.
Interact Club Meeting
Last weekend saw a lovely gathering of Interact groups and representatives at St Columban's to present their plans in
supporting the community. Some very inspiring speakers impressed the group and well done to Erin Hilton Year 11, who
was selected as the Interact District Student Representative. A very worthwhile involvement!
One Million Women - Don't Miss Out!
This initiative will be very powerful. We have issued invitations across a large number of schools and it is a way to make a
difference in climate change awareness. We are privileged to have Jessica Watson as our keynote speaker for this event.
Jessica has practised the art of living sustainably when she sailed solo around the world in her boat 'Ella's Pink Lady'. A
sustainable fashion parade of recyclable clothing and sustainable refreshments using local produce are a feature – each
will highlight ways to reduce our carbon footprint. I am very proud of our St Columban’s College Environmental Committee
who have taken the lead in hosting this event. It is all happening at the College Chapel Community Centre on Wednesday
14 March at 4.30pm - it will be a part of extended International Women’s Day celebrations. We would encourage our young
women to bring along their mothers or another adult and be inspired by different speakers, with some wonderful
entertainment and tastes to entice you as well.
Debating - all set to go!
We have built up Debating to a high standard - let's hope that all goes well in the QDU competition! Best of luck to all the
teams who start this coming week.
Ash Wednesday
In the calendar of Western Christianity, is the first day of Lent and occurs 46 days before Easter. According to the
Canonical Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert before the beginning of his
public ministry, during which he endured temptation. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this 40-day liturgical period of
prayer and fasting. It is a time of spiritual renewal.
Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a sign of mourning
and repentance to God. The ashes used are typically gathered after the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday are
burned.
A Reflection
“During this Lenten season, may each of us pause and reflect about the ways in
which God has been good to us, both in terms of her great salvation and the
many little ways that our lives have been enriched by her grace.
If these things become personally meaningful to each of us, we will find
ourselves fully thankful, which will promote the experience of praise and thereby
rejoice the heart of God within ourselves”
Volleyball
What a weekend! A tight competition against West Moreton Anglican College after the games were moved to Morayfield
Indoor Centre. The boys really step up to the challenge of the shortened games and we recorded our first clean sweep,
winning all of the games.
The Year 8s had their first win with some great serving and confident team play. The 9s and 10s continued their style of
play with each team playing to their strengths and controlling the games with some great serving and placement of the ball.
The Opens both had to really fight for their wins and when they looked beaten in some games, a strategic time out and
words of encouragement was enough to lift them both to fine wins.
Year 8
Well what a day it was for the Year 8 boys volleyball team against WMAC. The boys worked as a team and were
victorious, winning convincingly 3-0. All players played a fantastic game and kept their defence strong. Callum Clarke with
his remarkable spikes and Rusty Rosenberger with his serving techniques at the end certainly helped claim the win. Our
coaches’ excellent coaching skills have definitely paid off but stay tuned for next week because I believe we are on a roll
from here on in.
Sam Gonano
Year 10
The Year 10 side this year is a team on a mission and are very determined to succeed this year and this has brought them
together as a team. They knew the importance of coming out fast and they were faultless at the net and covering shots in
the middle and back of the court. At training they worked a lot on moving their feet and getting into position early rather
than throwing up an arm to save a shot and they did this in the first two sets to win them convincingly.
The third set was a hard contest as they gave away a 11-2 lead but after regrouping they tried valiantly to try and reclaim
the point going down by just 15-13 in the last. A great effort and with a 2-1 win. The boys look forward to a tough task
against Ormiston.
Brad Andersen
Coach
Open As and Bs
Great games of volleyball played on Saturday with the As and Bs facing some tough competition from West Moreton
Anglican College. The final score for both teams, 2-1, highlights just how close the competition was. The Bs played
well with no reserves they maintained their energy levels to fight back in the final set to take the game. A special mention
must be made of Braden Lockyer, who remained with his team to play out the game despite other commitments.
Last year the WMAC boys took the premiership from our Bs, so this year the As had something to prove. The game was
tight and captain Lucas Dewar once again inspired the team to keep up the game play right until the end. The third set
decider came down to the wire, with the points bouncing back and forth between the two teams. WMAC tried their best to
rattle our As, but we still emerged victorious. An awesome win.
We are home again next week against Ormiston which promises to be another tough home game but I am sure they will
be ready for the challenge after the weekend. Well done coaches and teams!
