Principal’s Message
Dear Students, Staff, Family and Friends,
Principal’s Message
2 6 A P R I L 2 0 1 2
I trust in the kindness of God forever
“God of all peoples in Jesus Christ
You call us from our foolishness to be you children
coming amongst us like a kookaburra singing
the song of a new day.”
What a marvelous week of Anzac celebration and spirit! Our Anzac Liturgy at school on
Monday was very moving and it was wonderful to have so many involved.
The ceremony involved thirty special guests including (Professor) Colonel Nan Bahr as
our guest speaker, the Catafalque Soldiers and Bushranger Army trucks and our past
students inclusive of Vietnam Veterans. We especially remembered Vincent Healy who
was killed in the Korean War in 1951, and it was wonderful to have Vince’s family come
from all over Australia to honour him. A special framed presentation, featuring Vincent
Healy and his military involvement until his death at 24, was made to the College by Terry
Fogarty on behalf of the Past Students and Vietnam Veterans. Peter Healy, Vince’s
brother, addressed us all and we were moved by his heart wrenching memories of Vince,
and were able to admire the courage shown by him. We were also grateful for the
beautiful flowers presented to us. Compliments must go to our Tradition Committee,
facilitated by our Deputy Mr Frank McCullagh, Mrs Rachel Mancini, Mr Paul Galvin, and
musicians led by Mrs Jillian Dearling, caterers from the tuckshop, and our library staff
including Archivist Mrs Margie Hallinan, and Past Students Officer Mrs Linda Upton,
Facilities Manager Mr Pat Greene and grounds staff.
Then, on Tuesday, we had Heritage Day with the Silver Slipper won clearly by English
House, followed by the Bribie Island “Walk for Spirit” which was very successful,
enjoyable and really a credit to our student community. Many thanks to all those who
assisted especially Deputy Mr Frank McCullagh and Sports Coordinator Ms Michelle
Wust. Hopefully we will do well in our dollars collections. It was nice to receive feedback
from the Bribie Community saying how well behaved our students were on the walk!
On Anzac Day on Wednesday, we were thrilled that over 300 students marched in
Caboolture, and thirty-five in uniform at Bribie Island with some at the Bribie Dawn
Service, eight at Deception Bay Dawn Service, fourat Beachmere and others at Kilcoy
and Wamuran. The students looked superb and what incredible witness they gave in
memory of all those in war, UN campaigns, and military service and the exemplary spirit
and courage of our Anzacs. Our College Captains Jayana Kerr and Elijiah Bulter also
delivered an inspiring speech at the Anzac Day Mass at 7am on Wednesday.
Longman Youth Leadership Forum
A word from Wyatt:
On behalf of all the young people who attended the inaugural Longman Youth Leadership Forum, I want to extend a
big thank you for your support!
The weekend proved to be a time of growth, and learning for the eager young minds of those who attended. It was
remarkable to see the confidence of these young people grow over the weekend, and their passion and desire to get
involved with local projects. The students took away new skills, new-found confidence and new friendships.
These young people are our future leaders and the Longman Youth Leadership Forum was an opportunity for them
to learn and put into practice some important leadership skills.
I look forward to hosting the Longman Youth Leadership Forum again next year to give the young people of St
Columban’s College, and our region, the opportunity to learn about leadership.
Some Feedback from Students:
I’ve learnt how to do public speaking and how to have confidence in yourself. (Liam, 16)
The LYLF has been really fun and we’ve learnt about our true colours and letting our confidence shine through. It’s
been great, everyone got to know each other and its been heaps of fun. (Sara, 16)
I’m having a great time at LYLF, it’s a great opportunity to take and I highly recommend it! (Riley, 17)
We just met 48 hours ago and we’re like a huge community now, I totally recommend it. (Jacob, 16)
We’re at the LYLF and it’s heaps and heaps of fun and we’ve learnt a lot of things. We’re all really keen for it to
happen again next year so we can come again! (Caitlin, 15)
Year 10 StC Netball v Cornwall Hill College, Pretoria, South Africa
Monday afternoon saw the Year 10 A and B Netball teams coached by
Miss Nicole Johnson and Ms Kris Johnson play a game against visiting
South African School, Cornwall Hill College. These girls are
representing their College in the schools first ever International Netball
Tour and have been competing at the Sunshine Coast against local
schools and in a Sunshine Coast Netball Tournament. With both teams
having performed to a high standard in this tournament, our girls were on
notice from the start that they would have to play well. Their A team in
particular was very well schooled, with one of the focal points of their
tour, some coaching sessions from very high level QLD and NSW state
Netball Coaches.
The girls played a good game and it was a great opportunity to further put into practice some of the skills that they
have been working on in training sessions. The girls also had a great time meeting the South African players and
having a chat with them about their tour and experiences and sharing their Tim Tams. We look forward to a
re-match when they plan on touring again in two years time.
