Dylan Shield, a stage lighting technician from the Playhouse Theatre and Mrs Alexander (Year 7) have designed the lighting effects for both school musicals. During the productions lights will be operated by Dylan Shield and Rebecca Glover (Playhouse Theatre), assisted by Clair Robertson. The long-term goal is to train Columba girls to carry out this function for future productions. 2012 School Trip to China We confirm the proposed school trip of three weeks in April (over the school holidays plus one week of school) will take place next year. The itinerary will include: Beijing, Xian, Shanghai (hosted by our sister school), a two/three day cruise on the Yangtze and a visit to the Panda Breeding Centre at Chengdu. Eighteen girls have currently expressed interest in the trip which is sufficient for it to proceed. Late expressions of interest may still be made. School Diary 2012 After looking at the possibility of using the iCAL facility on the girls‘ MacBook Pro 13‖ Laptops, we have decided to dispense with a paper School Diary for 2012. The information contained in the current School Diary can easily be added to the laptops, while the iCAL facility has the advantage of the girls‘ being able to enter/store homework and other information in their electronic diary. A further advantage of iCAL will be our ability to ―overlay‖ school events on the girls‘ electronic diary, for example, Years 7 to 13 Athletics Sports, South Island Sports Tournament Week, School Musical at the Mayfair Theatre and so on. 2011 Open Day Friday, 5th August is our Open Day with the following arrangements in place: 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. (Visits to classes and the Boarding Residences) 1.00 p.m. (Principal’s address) 1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. (Visits to the Boarding Residences) All tours will start at the School Office on the corner of Highgate and Oban Street where student guides will be available to take parents and prospective students on the tours. A Columba College Open Day is a normal school day with the usual timetable operating. Visitors are, however, most welcome to enter classrooms and observe classes in progress. We hope by running an Open Day in this way that visitors are able to gain an insight into how the School operates on a typical day. Morning-tea: A continuous morning-tea will be served in the dining-room of Bishopscourt from 9.00 a.m. until noon. All visitors are welcome to call in for morning-tea during the course of their visit to the College. School: The School (Years 1 to 13) will be open for tours from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. Boarding Residences: These will be available to visit from 9.00 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. and again from 1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. Prospective boarding students and their parents are welcome to attend a buffet lunch in the dining-room from 12.15 p.m. to 12.45 p.m. Mrs Richelle Manson, Director of Boarding, will also attend the lunch along with members of the House Committee. Principal’s address: This will be at 1.00 p.m. in the Recreation Room of Katharine Buchan House. The address will cover key aspects of the College, its aims and objectives, strengths and special features, cocurricular programme and key points of entry such as Year 7 and Year 9. It will also be an opportunity to ask questions, if so wished. If you know of parents interested in looking at Columba College for their daughters or sons, please pass on the date and details of our Open Day. Visits and tours can also be arranged on other days to suit. Notification of Student Absences (Years 0 to 13) by Parents The preferred method for parents to notify their child‘s absence to the School Office would be to email the following address: absences@columbacollege.school.nz If this is not possible, then please telephone the School Office from 8.00 a.m. onwards on: 03 467 5188 and no later than 9.00 a.m. This will facilitate our new electronic attendance record-keeping.
