Cable Grip Selection Charts Flexcor ® Wire Mesh Grips1. How to determine the cable outsidediameter or circumference range?■ Measure the diameter of the cable or use a cloth tape rule tomeasure around the end of the cable.■ Use the Cable Size Chart or the Portable Cord Size Chart onpage K-17.2. How many cables are in the grip?Single CableMeasure the diameter or circumference and use the CableDiameter/Circumference Conversion Chart.Multi-Cable with Cables of Equal DiameterUse the Multiple Cable Selection Chart. Under the Number of Cablesin One Grip, find diameter range of a single cable under theappropriate number of cables column.Multi-Cable with Cables of Different DiameterBand or tightly tape the end of the cable, measure circumferenceusing a cloth tape rule and use the Diameter/Circumference Chart tofind the diameter range.3. Determine the Environment?Dry: Galvanized Steel Mesh is recommended for applicationsnot subject to continuous outside environments.Harsh: Tin Coated Bronze Mesh is recommended for normalindoor & outdoor applications.Corrosive: Stainless Steel Mesh is recommended for any indoor oroutdoor environments which are highly abusive and maybe subjected to harsh chemicals.Flexcor ® Wire Mesh GripsConsiderations Regarding ApproximateSafety Factors, and Safe Working LoadsFlexcor ® Wire Mesh GripsCable Grip Selection ChartsThe approximate breaking strength of any Pass & SeymourWire Mesh Cable Grip is based on the working load informationestablished by Pass & Seymour engineering laboratories. In makingthese determinations, it is not possible to cover all applicationsand operating conditions. Variables such as diameters, grippingsurfaces, number of items gripped, tension, movement, attachments, abrasion, corrosion, prior use, or abuse must be assessedby the user. Greater safety factors should be utilized when theconditions of application are vague or unknown.K-165. Determine the Attachment Type?Single Eye: For use when cable is vertical; for applications wherecable bends, or where a single attachment is more advantageous forpositioning.Double Eye: For use when cable is vertical and extends throughgrip without bending. Eyes may be fastened to open hooks butshould not be more than 15˚ from axis of vertical cable.Offset Eye: Similar to single eye applications, but for use whenoffset positioning is required.Locking (Universal) Bail: Adjustable and self-locking, thisattachment may be used around a beam, pipe or other continuousstructural objects.6. Determine the Mesh Type?Closed Mesh: (catalog number prefix “FC”): For permanentsupport when cable end is available to be installed through grip.Split Lace: (catalog number prefix “FS”): For permanent supportwhen cable end is NOT available. With additional lace supplied, weave lace through mesh around cable (like a shoe lace). Whencompletely laced, twist strands together or tie in a knot.Split Rod: (catalog number prefix “FR”): For temporary supportwhen cable end is NOT available. Wrap grip around cable; usingtwisting motion, thread the rod through the split mesh.Check the length and weight of cable run to determine minimumholding strength required, leaving a comfortable safety factor.Standard Series: is used for vertical runs to 99 feet; continuousloads 10-599 pounds; cable diameter 1/2 inch to 4 inches.Heavy Long Series: is double weave and is used for vertical runsover 100 feet; continuous loads over 600 pounds; cable diameter3/4 inch to 4 inches. For specific applications where strength and holding powerare important, consult the manufacturer. To determine therecommended working load safety factor for listed cable grips, divide the approximate breaking strength by 5 for pulling grips and10 for support grips. Pass & Seymour maintains a 6 sigma safetyfactor for pulling grips and a 5 sigma safety factor for support gripsfor these recommended working loads (using average breakstrengths obtained on new grips under lab test conditions). All warranties concerning product quality or performance are basedon wire mesh grips that are properly stored and handled by theuser, and grips that are maintained and inspected at a properfrequency in keeping with their use and condition.
