KEEP YOUR
BALANCE
With over 35 years of racing history behind us, we could be the
spokespeople for traction and control. These tips should help
you figure it all out.
STUD PLACEMENT
• Trail studs should not extend beyond the rubber track
lugs more than 3/8 in.
• Studs along the track’s center have the greatest control
for acceleration.
• Studs placed along the track edge resist sliding and
should be fewer in number. Place no studs within 1 in.
of track edge.
• Do not place studs in line with heat exchanger and
tunnel protector strip to avoid damage; factor in
suspension travel.
• Stud patterns with the least repetition provide the most
traction. Use our stud template or contact your Arctic Cat
dealer.
• Wearbars and studding must be selected as a balanced
package for proper sled control.
STEERING CONTROL
The length of the turning carbide (carbide insert directly under the steering
spindle) is the determining factor on steering control. The longer the turning
carbide, the more positive turning becomes. Too few studs used with long
turning carbides can result in a situation as seen in illustration 1 below.
Back end loose. Too much carbide, not
1 enough studding. 2
IT’S ALL ABOUT CONTROL
Front end pushes. Weak steering from worn
wearbars/turning carbides too short or overstudding
on track.
TRACTION CONTROL
The quantity and type of studs inserted through the track can have several
effects. If installed improperly, track and/or stud damage can result. If the
pushing force from an excessive number of studs exceeds the ability of the
steering to control that force, the effect could be like that in illustration 2.
In this case, the studs tend to “push” the skis in a straight line.
Wearbar control and stud quantity are in
3 balance for proper setup.
