THE HAVEN JANUARY 20106NOTICES FROM MEMBERSMEET THE QUEENS – FROM DAVE GITTINSIn 2010, Adelaide will be visited by two notable ships <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cunard Line.On Wednesday 24 February, Queen Victoria will arrive at Outer Harbor at 0800.She will sail at 1800 on <strong>the</strong> same day. She is very similar to Arcadia, which visitedus on 16 February 2009 and with a Gross Tonnage <strong>of</strong> about 90,000 she is notexceptionally large by modern standards. She will dock at Outer Harbor berthnumber 2. Her specifications according to Cunard follow:Length: 294 metres (964.5 feet)Beam: 32.3 metres (106 feet)Draft: 7.9 metres (25.9 feet)Far more impressive is Queen Mary 2, which will arrive on 11 March at 0800. Shewill sail at 1745 on <strong>the</strong> same day. Because <strong>of</strong> her great length, she will anchoroutside Outer Harbor, at least ten miles from <strong>the</strong> SKBC.For a time, QM2 was <strong>the</strong> largest passenger ship afloat, but she has now beensurpassed by Oasis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Seas and Allure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Seas, both with a Gross Tonnage<strong>of</strong> about 220,000. With <strong>the</strong> retirement <strong>of</strong> Queen Elizabeth 2, QM2 is now <strong>the</strong> onlypassenger liner able to exceed 30 knots. Her specifications according to Lloyds’Register follow:Gross Tonnage: 148,528,Net Tonnage: 98,720LOA 345.03 metres: (1132 feet)LBP 301.35 metres: (988.7 feet)Moulded beam: 41 metres. (135.5 feet)Draft 10.3 metres: (33.8 feet_DWT 19,189 tonnes: (18,882.7 tons)Her diesel/electric power system delivers 157,000hp and drives four propellers. Two propellers are fixed and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs are in revolving pods, which give her greatcontrollability.********************CLUBROOMS AND HARDSTAND AREAFROM STEVE MILLER (CLUB SECRETARY)Members are reminded that nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Clubrooms nor Hardstand facilities aredumping ground for rubbish or unused articles from home, boat or yacht. Onlyrubbish from your vessel can be placed in clubs large waste bin which has beenremoved while vessel is at <strong>the</strong> club.

THE HAVEN JANUARY 2010There seems to be a mindset that if <strong>the</strong> club is making a pile <strong>of</strong> scrap or rubbish itwon’t hurt to add to it.This is an unacceptable practice as <strong>the</strong> club has to pay for removal and disposal <strong>of</strong>rubbish, used car tyres being a major issue as <strong>the</strong> cost to dispose <strong>of</strong> a tyre is around$10 per tyre and <strong>the</strong> larger <strong>the</strong> tyre <strong>the</strong> higher <strong>the</strong> cost. It seems also that memberswhen <strong>the</strong>y change batteries in <strong>the</strong>ir boat think it is acceptable to leave <strong>the</strong> old one by<strong>the</strong> tractor shed, again this is your problem as <strong>the</strong> boat owner to dispose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>battery not <strong>the</strong> clubs and at current prices <strong>of</strong> around .38c per kilo to recycle just dropyour old one <strong>of</strong>f at recycling centre and you will collect around $5.00 to purchaseyour new battery. Don’t use <strong>the</strong> excuse that by leaving it <strong>the</strong> club will get <strong>the</strong>money, well remember someone else has to dispose <strong>of</strong> it and maybe <strong>the</strong>y wouldra<strong>the</strong>r be out fishing or sailing <strong>the</strong>n cleaning up after you. So if you want <strong>the</strong> club tomaintain its low fee’s <strong>the</strong>n please keep our facilities tidy and don’t use <strong>the</strong>m as adumping ground. If you wish to donate an article to <strong>the</strong> club that may be useful contact a committeemember, don’t just leave it thinking someone will find it. It’s not useful if no-oneknows where it is or what it is.A fur<strong>the</strong>r note in <strong>the</strong> new year <strong>the</strong>re will be a major cleanup around hard stand areaso if you have some type <strong>of</strong> gizmo or mechanism o<strong>the</strong>r than slip cradles and trailersyou use when you slip your boat or launch it please label it and inform <strong>the</strong>committee in writing and maybe add a photo, o<strong>the</strong>rwise it might not be <strong>the</strong>re nexttime you need it.Steve.(A reminder again and so new members are aware, as a courtesy to all memberswho use <strong>the</strong> 4WD to launch <strong>the</strong>ir boats, please DO NOT leave your trailer attachedto it while you go out in your boat. Please put <strong>the</strong> 4WD back in it’s rightful place soo<strong>the</strong>r members have it to use without <strong>the</strong> inconvenience <strong>of</strong> having an unknowntrailer attached, it’s a simple enough etiquette and one all members must maintainfor <strong>the</strong> club to run smoothly and without hassle……Jo)COOKIES FISHING CORNERTo kick <strong>of</strong>f our small contribution to The Haven <strong>newsletter</strong>, we thought a fewspecials for club members only should be <strong>the</strong> way to go so....LADIES....don't miss this one....Pflueger trion combo...7ft light action rod+trion 7bb reel 5year warranty in a lovelymauve colour...normally$119.00 now $69.95.Ladies pink Shakespeare reels overhead or spin. THE HAVEN JANUARY 2010Nautical LingoThe Steamboat Captain brought his son along on a short cruise upriver to show himwhat he does for a living. All <strong>the</strong> kid wanted to do was steer <strong>the</strong> boat. Insisting thathis fa<strong>the</strong>r taught him enough to handle <strong>the</strong> job he asked <strong>the</strong> pilot to let him take <strong>the</strong>helm."Okay", said <strong>the</strong> pilot , "but you must pass a small test first, If I asked you to turn to<strong>the</strong> left, what nautical term should I use?""Turn to Port", said <strong>the</strong> boy."Correct", said <strong>the</strong> pilot."If I wanted you to turn <strong>the</strong> boat to <strong>the</strong> right, what direction would that be?""Starboard", said boy grinning from ear to ear."Good for you", said <strong>the</strong> pilot."And straight?" asked <strong>the</strong> pilot. The boy quickly replied, "Without ice."Crossword solution:10
