preservation12The project to conserve the Ely Dean and Chapterrecords, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund,came to a successful conclusion. A major part of thecollection consists of medieval parchment rolls, manyseveral metres long, which had to be relaxed to makethem usable. The collection also contains about fiftymusic manuscripts bound in sheep or calfskin. Thesewere re-sewn where necessary and boxed.The Macclesfield collection of Newton papersconsists of a wide range of material, including bounditems and notebooks, items pasted into ‘guardbooks’,loose single leaves and printed items. Conservationwork on the collection, funded by the Andrew W.Mellon Foundation, is concentrating initially onthe guardbooks, which, because of the varied natureof the size and type of their contents, have sufferedfrom use in the past. The paper itself, though 300years old, is in relatively good condition, but somesheets have been folded (leading to lines of weaknessalong the fold) and, in some cases, the iron gall ink isburning into the paper, leading to tears and fractures.Preservation microfilming of the RosenthalCollection of Africana has been completed andthe last batch of master films is due to be sent tothe central microfilm store at the National Libraryof Wales.Conservation workon a notebook ofSir Isaac Newton(MS Add.3995),showing thedamaged paperstraightened outand repaired.
