28Ercole Silva,Dell’arte dei giardiniinglesi (Milan 1801),an influential surveyof English landscapegardening for Italianreaders. Purchasedwith a contributionfrom the Friendsof the Library.and University Archives, spoke on one of theDepartment’s most noteworthy treasures in a talktitled ‘The sword of the spirit, the word of God, andthe Book of Deer’; this is believed to have been theonly occasion on which an image of Bart Simpson hasformed an illustration to a Friends’ talk. In FebruaryMax Egremont gave a much-enjoyed talk on ‘SiegfriedSassoon as a book collector’, and in March PatriciaFara continued the Newton theme with a talk on‘Advertising genius: images of Isaac Newton’. Achange of venue to the Law Faculty Building, onaccount of computer training in the Morison Room, did not dampen enthusiasm for a talk by the Head ofthe Library’s Taylor-Schechter Genizah Research Unit,Professor Stefan Reif, titled ‘A medieval Mediterraneandeposit and a modern Cambridge archive’. Two otherevents formed part of the Friends’ programme forthe year: in February 2002 a concert was held, inassociation with Selwyn College Music Club, at whichmusic from the time of Isaac Newton was performed;and, in the same month, a reception was held for Friendsin the Cambridge University Press Bookshop, TrinityStreet, at which Bill Davies spoke on the history of thePress, and books were available for purchase at asubstantial discount. The Friends’ summer outing did nottake place in 2002, due to a low expression of interest.ObituaryWe record with regret the deaths of the followingmembers: Mr B.C.
