Servingas members of a secret guild or aspart of a hierarchy of death priests, they are entrusted with theserious responsibility ofcomposing suitable lamentsfor the dead. The moreimportant the deceased, the more sorrowful andmoving her lament is expectedto be. No one willremember the dead queenin a few short generations, buta great lament might be sung athousand years hence. However, most dirgesingersdo not belong toany special hierarchyor guild. Instead, theyare rootless wandererswho travel from placeto place, wrappedin inconsolablegrief from somepersonal tragedy. These sad wanderersseek to expresstheir grief throughsongs that teach thehearts of their listenersthe meaning of true sorrow. Some of these fallen bards wantnothing more than for others to understand the depths of theirloss. A few are sinister creatures who believe that, since joy hasbeen extinguished for them, they must in turn extinguish thejoy of others by using their powers to teach folk the folly of love, the futility of hope, and the finality of the grave. Dirgesingers ofthis last sort often associate themselves with powerful undead, serving in the courts of vampire lords or lich-kings.All dirgesingers must have at least some expertise as a bard. Some are also trained as rogues or clerics before entering thisclass.Hit Die: d6.REQUIREMENTSTo qualify to become a dirgesinger, a character must fulfill allthe following criteria.Alignment: Any nongood.Skills: Knowledge (religion) 4 ranks, Perform (any) 8ranks.Feat: Requiem.Special: Bardic music class feature.CLASS SKILLSThe dirgesinger’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill)are Bluff (Cha), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy(Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (history) (Int), Knowledge(religion) (Int), Listen (Wis), Perform (Cha), Sense Motive (Wis),and Speak Language (n/a).Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier.Remi Orvenna, a dirgesingerCLASS FEATURESAll of the following are class features of the dirgesingerprestige class.Weapon and ArmorProficiency:Dirgesingers gain noproficiency with anyweapons, armor, orshields.Dirgesong (Su):A dirgesinger gains thedirgesong ability.Dirgesong followsthe same rules as bardic music(see Bardic Music, page 29 ofthe Player’s Handbook). Dirgesingerlevels stack withbard levels for the purpose ofdetermining how often a charactercan use dirgesong or bardicmusic. Dirgesinger levels do not stackwith bard levels for determining whichbardic music effects and spells a bard hasaccess to.
