A Powerful Approachto WastewaterTreatmentThe new OMNIFLO® InterchangeSequencing Batch Reactor (ISBR) systemcombines two of the most efficientwastewater treatment technologies into asingle powerful system, reducing costs andenhancing plant performance. This totalwastewater treatment solution begins withthe state-of-the-art OMNIFLO® SequencingBatch Reactor (SBR), and integrates therevolutionary Cannibal® Solids ReductionSystem. As a result, the OMNIFLO® ISBRsystem accomplishes superior secondarywastewater treatment and provides anenergy efficient solids handling solutionthat reduces overall operational costs. That’sunparalleled synergy in wastewatertreatment. The OMNIFLO® ISBR system begins with thestate-of-the-art OMNIFLO® (SBR) deliveringsuperior performance under the mostdemanding conditions. It providesmaximum efficiency and unparalleledoperational flexibility and is ideally suitedfor applications where nitrification, denitrification, and biological phosphorousremoval are necessary. The OMNIFLO® SBR utilizes a fill-and-draw,non-steady state activated sludge process. One or more reactor basins are filled withwastewater during a discrete time period, and then operated in a batch mode. TheOMNIFLO® SBR system accomplishesequalization, aeration, and clarification in atimed sequence – all in a single reactorbasin. In a conventional continuous flowprocess, multiple structures are required toobtain the same treatment objectives.By combining the OMNIFLO® SBR with theCannibal® Solids Reduction System,Siemens provides the most energy efficientprocess and the lowest sludge yield of anySBR on the market today. The benefits include: Low sludge production High quality effluent at widely varyingflows and loadings Inherent biological nutrient removal (BNR)capability Removal of non bio-degradable trash fromwastewater treatment plant Energy efficient Reduced space requirements Integrated control system for overall plantperformance optimization Single process responsibility with plantwide performance guarantees2

Typical plant layout for OMNIFLO® ISBR systemSynergy ThroughIntegration0The Cannibal® Solids Reductionsystem significantly reduces thebiological solids produced bywastewater treatment plants, anddecreases the costs associated withsludge wasting, stabilization, anddisposal. It is designed to tackle twomain components of solids present inthe mixed liquor of any conventionalactivated sludge plant: biologicalsolids and non-readily degradabletrash, grit, and inerts. The nonbiodegradablematerial is removedthrough a series of physicalAnnual OMNIFLO® ISBR System Savings – 1.5 MGD FacilityWithout Cannibal® With Cannibal®Solids Reduction Solids ReductionSystemSystemPower for aerobic digester($.09 / kW-hour) $56,660 $8,950WAS disposal($37 /wet ton at 18% TS) $86,670 $9,390Screenings/inert disposal($37 / wet ton at 30% TS) $0 $12,390Polymer for dewatering($25 / dry ton) $10,540 $1,140Power for solids separation module(7 Hp total) $0 $2,875Power for mixers in the Interchangetanks (30 Hp total) $0 $1,470Net operational savings$117,655 per yearseparation steps, and the productionof biological solids is reduced byreconfiguring the biology of thetreatment process.By integrating the Cannibal® SolidsReduction system and the OMNIFLO®SBR, an efficient, flexible, andeconomic wastewater treatmentsystem is created. The “new”OMNIFLO® ISBR system offers thelowest possible sludge production ofany SBR process available andprovides single integrated operationalcontrols for overall plant performanceoptimization. This system is ideallysuited for plants that have high solidshandling costs, as well as tighteffluent requirements. Proven technology A total wastewater treatment solution Reduced costs associated with solidshandling, hauling and disposal Easy to use, automated controls Licensed plant operators available24 hr/day, 7 days/week Plant wide performance guarantee4

OMNIFLO® SBRBiological solids purged from facilityExperienceThe OMNIFLO® ISBR system is aproven, practical option forsecondary wastewater treatmentand solids reduction. This completelyautomated system is a very reliable, cost effective and efficienttreatment process consistentlyproducing high quality effluent. In the State of California, anOMNIFLO® ISBR system has beeninstalled at a wastewater treatmentfacility located near a hotel and casino.A design/build approach wasselected to build a 0.75 milliongallon per day (mgd) facility with a900 mg/ BOD load. This facility alsowas designed to handle not onlyhigh strength wastewater, but alsoweekly variations in flows andloadings due to the hotel andcasino business.Because of the limited land spaceand the requirement of an easy tooperate wastewater treatmentplant, the OMNIFLO® ISBR systemwas the ideal solution. Thebiological treatment processincludes a two-tank OMNIFLO® SBRwith VARI-CANT® Jet Aerationsystem that is operated by a flowproportional control system fromSiemens. Initial plans called for theinstallation of an aerobic digesterand sludge drying beds for sludgehandling, however because of theconcern of the high energy costsassociated with aerating an aerobicdigester, a more energy efficientsolution was needed. It was foundthat a significant savings could berealized with the OMNIFLO® ISBRsystem, which includes theCannibal® Solids Reduction System. The Cannibal® system requiresminimal aeration, which reducesenergy requirements and alsoprovides the benefit of greatlyreducing the amount of solids fordisposal. The wastewater treatment plant wasstarted up in July 2004 and hasexceeded expectations. TheOMNIFLO® ISBR system hasconsistently met all treatmentperformance objectives for effluentquality, energy savings and solidsreduction. The facility uses less than10 percent of the power for solidstreatment than was planned withthe proposed aerobic digester.Solids wasting from the plant hasbeen minimal, with less than 0.1pounds of biological solids wastedfrom the plant per pound of BODtreated. The control system fromSiemens keeps the entire treatmentfacility operating - balancing theproper conditions in both theOMNIFLO® SBR and the interchangebioreactor. Optimal conditions aremaintained for both effluent qualityand minimizing solids production.5
