Born in a small West African village in 1906, Senghor had directed amovement against French colonial rule that bringed Senegal independence in 1959.Senghor served as Senegal’s first elected president from 1960 to 1980. Because ofSenghor’s political influence, therefore, Senegal is today one of Africa’s most stable andaffluent nations.After World War II, Senghor has entered politics and held a number of electedpositions in France and Senegal between 1946 and 1959. During this time, workingceaselessly in African independence movements, all the while it emphasizes theimportance of African cultural identity.
