<strong>Muskegon</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>2012 ~ 2013 Men’s Baseball Head CoachHEAD COACH - CAP POHLMANThe 2012-2013 season will be Coach Pohlman’s15thyear as head coach of the Muskgon <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>Jayhawks. He owns a record of 441 & 278. His 2007-2008 Jayhawk squad won the school’s first ConferenceChampionship and the 2009-2010 squad broke 21 schoolrecords including a record 44 wins. He was born andraised in Saginaw Michigan. Pohlman threw 7 no hitters atSaginaw Douglas MacArthur High School. He then movedon to Central Michigan University; his career there washighlighted by defeating South Carolina on a no-hitterand in the Regional and defeating Big Ten ChampionIowa on a 3-hitter. He was drafted in the 9th roundby the Milwaukee Brewers and spent two years in theminors before his career ended because of an arm injury.Coach Pohlman spent one season as a volunteer coachat CMU before becoming the head coach at ChesaningHigh School. His teams won seven conference championships. His best team was 32 & 7 andthey set many state records. He left Chesaning to become the assistant baseball coach at MiamiUniversity in Oxford, Ohio. His primary responsibility there was working with the pitchers.Starting with an 8 man pitching staff Coach Pohlman built a pitching staff of 24 pitchers after 4years. Four of his pitchers were drafted, including Scott Sauerbeck and Dave Swartzbaugh. In2011 Garrett Bolt, who pitched for Pohlman at MCC, was drafted by the LA Dodgers.Coach Pohlman spent 12 years at Fruitport High School before retiring. He spent 4 years asVarsity Baseball Coach. Three of those teams were conference champs. His high school recordover 18 years was 351 wins and 145 losses. In 2002 Coach Pohlman was elected to the MichiganHigh School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 2009 he was selected to the CMUHall of Fame as part of the 1971 National Runner-ups. His resume also includes coaching football,basketball and he was also an athletic director. He has spoken at many clinics and camps. He issupported by his wife of 38 years, Deb, a retired teacher. He has 2 children; his daughter Karliis a teacher at <strong>Muskegon</strong> Public Schools and she is married to Jason Baldus, who works at theNewaygo Intermediate School District. His son Carey is married to Cara and they are bothteachers in Gastonia, North Carolina. He is also the proud grandpa of Karina and Jackson Baldus.Coach’s Comments: This year’s team is much more balanced with the right mix of sophomoresand freshman. Last year’s experiences we hope will translate to more successon the field. We had several losses in the pitching staff and feel at the top ofour rotation and our bullpen will be stellar. We need the freshman pitchers toadjust quickly. Defensively we expect to be strong. Offensively we are looking formore stolen bases and run production. It will be a disappointment to the coachingstaff and these sophomores if we don’t compete for the league and Regionals.


<strong>Muskegon</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>2012 ~ 2013 Men’s Baseball Assistant CoachASSISTANT COACH - GREG GUZMANCoach Guzman is starting his 9th year as an assistant coach withthe <strong>Muskegon</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> Baseball Team. He was bornand raised in <strong>Muskegon</strong> and he graduated from Oakridge HighSchool in 1990. Coach Guzman attended Jordan <strong>College</strong> for 2years before returning to <strong>Muskegon</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> for 2years majoring in Business.Coach Guzman’s previous coaching experience includes 2 years ashead coach for the 16U Channel Cats. He also spent a year as avolunteer assistant with the Oakridge High School Baseball Team.In addition he also was a volunteer assistant for 2 years with theMCC Women’s Basketball team as well as coaching high school girl’sand boy’s basketball and AAU basketball. In his spare time CoachGuzman enjoys working as a pitching/hitting instructor and he alsoannounces the women’s and men’s Jayhawk basketball games.Coach’s Comments: Coach Guzman is in charge of our defense and bunting. He works specifically withour infielders and outfielders and sets our defense. He also coaches first base and has worked manyhours to make “Jayhawk Nation” successful. He bleeds Blue and Gold.ASSISTANT COACH - KEITH WILLIAMSCoach Williams is entering his 4th year as an assistant coachat <strong>Muskegon</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>. After graduating fromMontrose High School, he attended Adrian <strong>College</strong> where heplayed baseball.Coach Williams brings with him six years as the varsity baseballcoach at <strong>Muskegon</strong> High School. In 2005, his coaching peersvoted him as the <strong>Muskegon</strong> Chronicle’s All-Area Coach ofthe Year. He also spent two summers as the hitting coach forthe <strong>Muskegon</strong> Channelcats Connie Mack team. In addition,Coach Williams has worked summer baseball camps for theUniversity of Michigan, Central Michigan and Notre Dame. Hehas also spent time in Puerto Rico coaching for Coast to CoastAthletics.Coach Williams is currently a strength and conditioning teacherat <strong>Muskegon</strong> High School. He is married to Susan and they have twochildren; 13 year old daughter Kiley and 10 year son Tanner, who is thebat boy for the Jayhawks!Coach’s Comments: Coach Williams works with our hitters and catchers and istireless in striving for perfection. He is an excellent communicator and has improvedour hitters from last year.

Kory would like to continue his education and play baseballat a 4 year institution.Coach’s Comments: Kory will be an instant contributor as a freshman. He will lead-off and playcenterfield and may at times courtesy run. He is a left handed pitcher who plans to attend a 4 year university and continueplaying baseball.Coach’s Comments: David needs to build off a successful season last year. Hisparents are Jane and Mark and he has an older brother Tyler and a sister Chelsea. He loveshanging out with his friends and singing karaoke with Jake Hahn on Nintendo Wii.Coach’s Comments: Matt has good skills but must catch up from taking a year off of baseball. Hisinjury to his arm has also put him behind. He will be an important role player as a pinch-hitter orrunner.

He has one older brother, Sammy. Drew graduatedfrom Reeths-Puffer High School where he played goalie for the soccer team and baseball.Drew was a 3 year varsity starter who received All-Area, All-Conference, All-District, andAll-Region honors. He is an outstanding defensive player who can do many things offensively to helpus. His future plans are to become an Engineer. Jake graduatedwith honors from Beal City High School. While at Beal, Jake played baseball, football, basketball,and participated in track and field. Jake was a member of back to back state championshipteams in baseball as well as a title in football. Jake plans to further his education at CentralMichigan University next fall.Coach’s Comments: Jake has to be an RBI producer for us to be successful this year. He will sharetime in center field and DH at times. He plans to transfer to a four year university afterM.C.C. to pursue a degree in Turf Management.Coach’s Comments: Zach is a freshman that could crack the starting rotation. He has improvedsince the start of fall ball and how quickly he adjusts to the speed of the game will dictate moundtime. He has a great demeanor.

He has four brothers and three sisters, so family has alwaysbeen a big part of his life. Nate started playing baseball when he was eleven and hasn’tstopped since. Nate was home schooled all his life then graduated through online classesfrom Central Lake High School. Jason is undecided on his major, but does planto transfer to a four year university and continue his education and baseball career.Coach’s Comments: Jason is one of the best raw talents we have ever had at <strong>Muskegon</strong> <strong>Community</strong><strong>College</strong>. He has worked hard to refine his skills and become more consistent. He will see spot dutyin right field and DH. If he continues to improve we think the sky is the limit for Jason!

Stephon graduated from Reeths-PufferHigh School in 2012. He played three years on the varsity baseball team where he earnedAll-Conference all three years as well as All-Area, and All-District his senior season. Stephonhas played travel baseball since he was in fourth grade. When not playing baseball, he spendstime at the beach and with friends. After <strong>Muskegon</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>, Stephon plans ontransferring into Ferris State University’s Pharmacy program.Coach’s Comments: Stephon is adjusting to the speed of the game. We think he can help us thisyear as a potential courtesy runner and will back up Travis in left field. How quickly he adjusts willget him, like most freshman, more playing time.# Name19 Shawn Keller - Red ShirtShawn is the son of Jason and Jodi Keller. He graduated from Orchard View High School in 2012.Shawn played football, and baseball and was a four year member of the varsity baseball team. Hishonors in baseball were All-Conference, All-Area, and All-District in baseball. Shawn is looking topursue a degree in the medical field.Shawn injured his shoulder last year and will be red-shirted this year. Last year Adam posted a 7-4 record with a 1.36 E.R.A and 80 strikeouts in 87.2 inningspitched. Adam has committed to Grand Valley State University where he will continue his baseballcareer next season as a Laker. Poel prepped at Grand Haven High School where he was a 2X All-Area, 2x All-Conference, and an Under-Armour Pre-Season All-American. Adam also was a schoolrecord setting quarterback, played basketball, and was an academic All-State in all three sports. Hewould like to thank his family and friends for their limitless support in everything he chooses to do.Coach’s Comments: Adam was last year’s MVP, is this year’s co-captain, and has signed with GrandValley. M.J. went to high school at Grand Rapids Catholic Central where heplayed basketball for 3 years and baseball for 4 years, 3 years on the varsity. He plans ontransferring to Northwood University to play on the left side of the infield and earn hisBachelor’s Degree in Business. M.J. would like to thank his family, parents, and grandparentsespecially, for all their love and support; they are a big reason why he is where he is today.Coach’s Comments: M.J. will start most games at third base. He has already signed with Northwood andwe expect him to wreak havoc with Kory at the front of our lineup. Kyle plans on majoring in Criminal Justice.Coach’s Comments: Kyle will back-up at 3rd and short, but his biggest role will either be in thestarting rotation or out of the bullpen. He has an outstanding arsenal of pitches. Like mostfreshman he needs to adjust to the speed of the game.

He received medals for All-Conference, and All-District his junior andsenior seasons and was chosen All-State 2nd Team for pitching his senior year. Nick is majoringin Criminal Justice and also plans to pursue his baseball career at a 4 year university. He is a graduate of Mason County Central HighSchool where he was a three sport athlete. In his senior year of baseball he earned academicAll-Conference, 1st Team All-Conference as a pitcher, earning 2nd Team All-State. After histime at <strong>Muskegon</strong>, Brandon plans to transfer to a four year university to pursue his degree inSecondary Education.Coach’s Comments: Brandon had offseason Tommy John surgery and will be red-shirted this year.He was in our starting 4 last year and we expect him to come back in that role next year! His baseball awards were All-State 1st teamin his senior season and he was selected to play in the East vs. West All-Star game at ComericaPark. Chris is a 3 year varsity baseball letterman and also won a state championship in D3.Coach’s Comments: Chris is adjusting to the speed of the game, he has a good arm and somemajor skills as a hitter. Once Chris feels comfortable and confident at this level he will be a majorforce. We hope that will be this year. Chris will play 1st base and will be used out of the bullpen.

He has one sister Kaity. He is a graduate ofKenowa Hills High School in 2011. Greg lettered in baseball and basketball. This is Greg’ssophomore season for the Jayhawks. He enjoys hunting, sports, and hanging out with hisfriends in his spare time. Greg is a catcher and Business major who plans to continue hisbaseball career at a 4 year university.Coach’s Comments: Greg will share duties in Catching. He struggled last year but we anticipate a great year from him this year. After his 2 years at MCCJosh plans to transfer to a 4 year institution and continue playing baseball while pursuing adegree in Pharmacy.
