The EagleHas LandedWe are delighted to have adopted a giantmetal sculpture as part of the OswestryUrban Safari Trail. The magnificent eagle, which stands at almost nine feet tall on itsspecially designed plinth, has been installedon the School site close to St Oswald’sWell and Oswald’s Well Lane. Legend hasit that King Oswald, who was defeated inbattle on the site of the School’s playingfields, was quartered and hanged in a tree.A huge eagle swooped down, pluckedoff King Oswald’s arm and flew away;before he could disappear over the hills,All WeatherPitchDespite the inclement weather work has startedon the artificial hockey pitch and three five-asidefootball pitches, situated on the Maes-y-llan.The full size, synthetic grass pitch will be fencedand fully floodlit allowing sport to be playedin all weather conditions and, considering ourunpredictable seasons over the past few yearswill be a truly wonderful asset for the School! As well as providing an all-weather playingsurface for School pupils, the pitch will alsobe available for community use. The £500,000project is due to take sixteen weeks to completeand is being carried out by Leamington Spabased O’Brien Contractors. The pitch will becompleted in time for the start of the 2013Michaelmas term – we can’t wait!the eagle dropped his quarry and the armfell to the ground causing a natural springto form. This wonderful work of art couldnot have been realised without the supportand help provided by local Councillors KeithBarrow and Vince Hunt, Digga Rentals, T GGriffiths, sculptor Jeremy Schrecker and TheBritish Ironworks Centre. Oswestry Schoolare honoured to assist the Urban Safari Trailwhose aim is to promote a great sense ofpride in the community and give a healthy, much needed boost to local tourism.3

B E L L A N H O U S ELake District TripTudorLifeYear 6 travelled to Blencathra Field Studies Centre in the LakeDistrict for a week to develop their understanding of aspectsof the Geography and Science curriculum. The Field Centre isset in the south west side of Blencathra Mountain and offers agreat panorama of pastures, valleys, streams and lakes. Pupilsenjoyed activities including footpath conservation on thehills above Ullswater, orienteering, setting mammal traps andcanoeing (concentration, focus and energy were all key skillsemployed in abundance for this activity on Derwent Water).More technical skills were employed during the river studyand pupils learnt to use a range of equipment to test elementssuch as the speed of flow and gradient of the river. All Year 6pupils were really enthusiastic and they worked with pleasingdetermination.Years 3 and 4 visited ChirkCastle this term to experience‘Life in a Castle’. Pupilsexperienced work in thelaundry, made lavender bagsand pomanders to keepnasty smells at bay and wereencouraged to have fun thinkingabout the strange cures forailments, which includedsome live leeches! Pupils wereallowed into the dungeons, nineteen metres below ground, where the lights were switchedoff to let them experience howa prisoner might have felt. Theywere soon released for goodbehaviour to try on varioustypes of armour and to loadand ‘fire’ a cannon, the soundof which rattled the Castlewalls! The Castle grounds area fascinating place to walkaround, and a tour around thegardens to see the snowdropsconcluded the day.6

B E L L A N H O U S ETheGreatOrmeYear 5 spent a challengingday exploring the Great Ormeand the surrounding areasof Llandudno. Despite theblustery wind and bitter cold, the group showed enormousenthusiasm and determinationto carry on whatever theweather. The extremelypositive diary write up in theevening was a testament to thebenefits of taking pupils outof the classroom and into thewonderful countryside on ourdoorstep.National TrustDay OutAttingham Park was the venue for a wonderful day outfor Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils and the childrenenjoyed a fun filled timetable of activities. Reception pupilsscoured the grounds hunting for mini beasts and visited thedeer park as well as enjoying a tractor ride. A woodlandwalk, investigating the animals that lived there provedvery productive and the children found a number of greatcrested newts, which are a protected species, hiding underlogs. Pupils from Years 1 and 2 spent the day ‘Living in thePast’ as servants working in the “big house”. They enjoyeddressing up and learning what life was like for kitchenstaff in the 18th century. Activities included working in thekitchen and laying a tea tray for the lady of the house!7

B E L L A N H O U S EThe VillageBakeryThe Village Bakery in Coedpoeth, kindlyhosted a visit from our Years 2 and 3 pupils. The children were shown the complete breadmaking process and had fun wearing hatsand aprons (for health and safety reasons ofcourse!). Pupils were amazed at how “clever”the machines used were and the opportunityto make their own creatures. Hedgehogs werethe most popular by far; after the dough wasrolled and shaped the pupils watched as itwas placed in the oven. Our thanks go to theJones family for such a lovely day.Oswestryin BloomAfter many weeks of waiting for their bulbsto appear, keeping a diary of the progressmade and pressing flowers from the bulbsoriginally planted, Year 3 were thrilled towin the coveted Bulb Competition Cup inthe Oswestry in Bloom annual competition.Following on from this win, Year 3 wereinvited by the Town Council to helpreplant bluebells from the Cae Glas parkwildlife area. The group sessions are the idealpreparation for individual learning opportunitiesstarting in Year 2.8

B E L L A N H O U S EChess BuffsThe Prep Department has a thriving chess clubwhich now competes in national competitions.Hamish Coutts-Britton (Year 3) and Ben Tidridge(Year 4) accumulated enough points to reach theregional megafinal of the Delauncey UK Schoolschess challenge recently held in Worcester. Forboth boys, this was their first experience of nationalcompetition and they learned a great deal abouttactics. Hamish’s final match was a long, drawnoutaffair which lasted 50 minutes and was finallydecided on points as the competitors went overtime. The technicality cost him qualification forthe gigafinal. However, Hamish and Ben werecommended on taking part and thus beingoutstanding players at both school and county level.ForestSchoolThe Forest School area is being developed in leapsand bounds. Pupils have been very busy cultivatingthe plot and planting vegetables and havefound their green fingers by understanding andimplementing the square bed planting process withbroad beans, rainbow chard, beetroot and broccoli. The children have also brought projects from theclassroom to the outdoors; ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’and Viking building and cooking habits (whittling, wattle and daub and building a fire pit) have beenparticular favourites. A compost bin has now beenset up which is added to every week. Pupils havelearned what is suitable for composting and addingthe worms is a highlight!9
