Here are just a couple!High school kids lead the wayIn Term Three high school students returned to their oldprimary and intermediate schools to dispel some of themyths around what to expect when making the jump tosecondary school. The Duffy Books in Homes School Leader assemblies allowed schools to invite twosenior high school students to speak about what to expect at high school, whatthey hope to achieve afterwards and how a love of books and reading can make allthe difference to children’s futures. We regularly send well-known role models to visit our 532 schools but havingspeakers closer to their own age helps to show children that the next step in theireducation doesn’t have to be a daunting one. Many of these senior students were past pupils of the schools they visit. Some stillhave brothers and sisters still at their old school and they also enjoy the chance toreconnect with their old teachers. Each Duffy school was given two books and two certificates to present to theSchool Leaders after their assembly. This year’s School Leaders chose fromPounamu Pounamu by Witi Ihimaera and The Silence Beyond – Selected Writingsby Michael King.Linda Vagana, is a strong believer in the initiative, “Sometimes high schoolstudents are able to reach kids involved in the programme in a different way to thesportspeople and celebrities that usually visit our schools. It’s a great opportunity forour kids to hear and share the aspirations of young people and leaders of their owncommunity,” she said.Bairds Kindergarten invited along their local librarianto read to the children while the teachers dressed upand organised a yummy sausage sizzle!Read about it!
