HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR2010-<strong>2011</strong>August 20102• The AGO partners with the <strong>Ontario</strong> College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong>and Design University (OCADU) to <strong>of</strong>fer a summerdesign day camp for children six to 13 years <strong>of</strong> age,where campers explore why “design matters,” underthe guidance <strong>of</strong> OCADU design <strong>in</strong>structors.• The Grange – a national historic house built <strong>in</strong> 1820and the <strong>Gallery</strong>’s first home – receives criticalrepairs, thanks to a generous grant from ParksCanada. Located at the south side <strong>of</strong> the AGO, TheGrange now houses the <strong>Gallery</strong>’s Members’ Lounge.• The Honourable James M. Flaherty, M<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>of</strong>F<strong>in</strong>ance, ceremonially removes the last piece <strong>of</strong>old drywall from the area that will become the newhome for the AGO Youth Council <strong>in</strong> the new WestonFamily Learn<strong>in</strong>g Centre. Designed by Hariri Pontar<strong>in</strong>iArchitects, the centre will comprise 35,000 squarefeet for art education programs and activities.Fund<strong>in</strong>g for this visionary project was made possibleby two key partners: the Government <strong>of</strong> Canada’sInfrastructure Stimulus Fund and a landmarkdonation from the W. Garfield Weston Foundation,which committed the largest s<strong>in</strong>gle gift <strong>in</strong> support <strong>of</strong>art education <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Gallery</strong>’s 111-year history.c<strong>in</strong>ema, reveal<strong>in</strong>g the rich <strong>in</strong>terplay between thetwo media.• The AGO features three l<strong>in</strong>ked yet uniqueexhibitions explor<strong>in</strong>g the process and labour<strong>of</strong> art <strong>in</strong> the studio with AT WORK: Eva Hesse –Studiowork, Betty Goodw<strong>in</strong> – Work Notes,Agnes Mart<strong>in</strong> – Work Ethic.• Some 500 Torontonians attend a lively debateabout the role <strong>of</strong> the arts <strong>in</strong> the city by Torontomayoral candidates <strong>in</strong> the AGO’s Baillie Court,while another 200 watch via live webcast<strong>in</strong>gfrom the <strong>Ontario</strong> College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> and DesignUniversity.• The <strong>Gallery</strong> re<strong>in</strong>stalls four <strong>of</strong> its first-floorEuropean galleries to host Shary Boyle: Fleshand Blood, organized and circulated by theGalerie de l’UQAM <strong>in</strong> partnership with the <strong>Art</strong><strong>Gallery</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ontario</strong> and <strong>in</strong> collaboration with theContemporary <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Gallery</strong>, Vancouver. Torontoartist Shary Boyle was the recipient <strong>of</strong> the$25,000 Gershon Iskowitz Prize at the AGO <strong>in</strong>2009 for her outstand<strong>in</strong>g contribution to visualarts <strong>in</strong> Canada.• shopAGO sells 300 books <strong>in</strong> three hours dur<strong>in</strong>ga book-sign<strong>in</strong>g by Gary Taxali, one <strong>of</strong> the mostsought-after illustrators <strong>in</strong> the advertis<strong>in</strong>g,design and editorial worlds, whose recentlyreleased children’s book This is Silly! receivedrave reviews.• The <strong>Gallery</strong> participates <strong>in</strong> the first-ever CultureDays celebration <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ontario</strong>, as actors representsculptures com<strong>in</strong>g to life <strong>in</strong> free street-theatreperformances.September 2010• Julian Schnabel: <strong>Art</strong> and Film, a major retrospective<strong>of</strong> the work <strong>of</strong> the award-w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g Americanfilmmaker and artist, opens at the AGO and traceshow Schnabel’s pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs exist <strong>in</strong> dialogue with theOctober 2010• The AGO’s FRANK restaurant receives the 2010VQA Gold Restaurant Award <strong>of</strong> Excellence fromW<strong>in</strong>e Country <strong>Ontario</strong>, its highest honour.4
