The 1962 American play A Thousand Clowns tells the story of a young boy and his free-spirited,
nonconformist uncle, Murray Burns, an unemployed television writer in New York City. Murray eventually
learns to conform to the rules of society in order to maintain custody of his nephew, meeting the challenges
with wit and irreverent humor. A 1965 movie version was adapted from the play by Herb Gardener.
Considered one of Milwaukee’s oldest, professional theater companies,
Milwaukee Chamber Theatre was co-founded in 1975 by two local actors
who envisioned a space where audiences could open their minds to new
