So far, I have only made pattern 1. I am not thoroughly pleased with <strong>the</strong> result:The legs aren't full enoughThe seat and crotch aren't fold<strong>in</strong>g up/wr<strong>in</strong>kl<strong>in</strong>g/hang<strong>in</strong>g quite <strong>the</strong> way of <strong>the</strong>illum<strong>in</strong>ations (and <strong>the</strong> bottom seam of <strong>the</strong> crotch is be<strong>in</strong>g pulled forward oddly. Ith<strong>in</strong>k this is due to <strong>the</strong> pattern us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same rise (distance from waist to <strong>the</strong>bottom of <strong>the</strong> crotch) for <strong>the</strong> front and back of <strong>the</strong> braies, which is not how <strong>the</strong>body is designed. The hem of <strong>the</strong> braies doesn’t look quite like <strong>the</strong> pictures; <strong>the</strong> slits are both on <strong>the</strong>outside of <strong>the</strong> leg and when pulled up <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong>y wrap around <strong>the</strong> leg and hangopen isn't quite like you see <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> illum<strong>in</strong>ations. I am not conv<strong>in</strong>ced that <strong>the</strong>pictures are actually show<strong>in</strong>g an angled hem l<strong>in</strong>e.The pattern is all bias cutt<strong>in</strong>g which seems odd for this time period, given <strong>the</strong> loosefitt<strong>in</strong>g nature of <strong>the</strong> braies. Thirteenth century hose were probably cut on <strong>the</strong> bias,so <strong>the</strong>y had some familiarity with us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bias, it just strikes me as odd to apply itto this garment. However, I did really like <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong> coulisse worked for roll<strong>in</strong>g down and gett<strong>in</strong>g thatpoofy waist stuff which is why patterns 2, 3 and 5 all have a non-standard waistplacement. On <strong>the</strong> Subject of Women’s BraiesThere is noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Maciejowski</strong> <strong>Bible</strong> that can be used as an argument for or aga<strong>in</strong>stbraies for women. It is possible that women wore no underpants at all. It’s possible <strong>the</strong>ywore braies just like <strong>the</strong> men’s. It’s possible <strong>the</strong>y wore some o<strong>the</strong>r style of underpants. The only women <strong>in</strong> a state of undress <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Maciejowski</strong> <strong>Bible</strong> are ei<strong>the</strong>r entirely nude orcovered with blankets from <strong>the</strong> waist down, so no conclusions can be <strong>in</strong>ferred.11
