Figure 1.7 Folio 35vThe Philist<strong>in</strong>es hang Saul’sbody from <strong>the</strong> walls of BethshanFigure 1.8 Folio 35vWarriors of Jabesh-Gileadremove Saul’s body from <strong>the</strong>walls of Beth-shanFigure 1.9 Folio 38vThe assass<strong>in</strong>s of Ishbosheth are sla<strong>in</strong>FabricAll of <strong>the</strong> braies are white. The braies are very full though <strong>the</strong> butt, but <strong>the</strong>y are softenough to tuck smoothly <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> hose (figure 7 and 8).LegsThe legs appear to be straight and loose, hang<strong>in</strong>g to about <strong>the</strong> mid-calf.HemEvery pair of braies shown loose has <strong>the</strong> hem pulled up by a corddescend<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> waist. This makes it hard to say if <strong>the</strong> hem isstraight or at an angle.Figure 3 suggests that <strong>the</strong>re is a slit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bottom of <strong>the</strong> hem (ra<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>njust <strong>the</strong> bottom edge be<strong>in</strong>g pulled up) because <strong>the</strong> left side hangsstraight. However, if <strong>the</strong>re is a slit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> leg open<strong>in</strong>gs it’s hard to figureout; <strong>in</strong> figures 1-3, 5 and 9 <strong>the</strong> slits seem to be both on <strong>the</strong> same side of<strong>the</strong> legs (ei<strong>the</strong>r right or left) ra<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>n be<strong>in</strong>g both on <strong>the</strong> outside orboth on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side, which would be more natural (assum<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> braiespattern is symmetrical). On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, if <strong>the</strong>re isn’t a slit whywould <strong>the</strong> cords that fall from <strong>the</strong> outside of <strong>the</strong> hips reach towards <strong>the</strong><strong>in</strong>ner leg to pull up <strong>the</strong> hem; figure 1-3, 5 and 9 all show one leg do<strong>in</strong>gthis, while <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r is pulled up from <strong>the</strong> outside of <strong>the</strong> leg.Figure 1.10: 1328 Paris. PetiteHours of Jeanne d'Evreaux.Figure 10, which dates to nearly 100 years after <strong>the</strong> <strong>Maciejowski</strong> <strong>Bible</strong>(but was made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same city) makes me lean towards <strong>the</strong> slithypo<strong>the</strong>sis, as it is clearly show<strong>in</strong>g braies with a slit.4
