Procedures:1) Begin by discussing Van Gogh and the type of art he created via Powerpoint presentation. Alsoshow the film “Dropping in on Van Gogh”.2) Instruct the students that they will be creating their own version of Starry Night, that it doesn’thave to look exactly like Van Gogh.3) Before materials are passed out, create a quick example of how the artwork should be drawn.Emphasize on the importance of a foreground, middleground and background. Begin with a largetree on the left side, and then put in a foreground of plants and bushes. Then put in a middleground of a town and mountains. Complete the drawing with a background of swirls, stars and amoon.4) Allow time for students to complete their drawing in pencil first, and then color the backgroundusing the texture plates. When finished, trace the pencil lines in a black Sharpe marker. This processshould take at least 2 full 45 minute class periods on an 18x24 piece of paper.5) When the student is finished coloring the entire page with the texture plates, the teacher willwash black India ink over the crayon which gives an effect similar to Starry Night. Be sure to usegloves as the ink can stain, which is why the teacher should do this; not the students.6) For those students who are finished before others, make copies of a Starry Night coloring sheet.
