This air mask will perform as designed only if used and serviced according to the instructions;otherwise it could fail to perform as designed, and persons who rely on the air mask could sustain seriouspersonal injury or death.This Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) is certified by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH).This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. This device may not seal properly with your face ifyou have a beard, gross sideburns or similar physicalcharacteristics (see NFPA-1500 and ANSIZ88.2). An improper facial seal may allow contaminantsto leak into the facepiece, reducing or eliminatingrespiratory protection. Do not use thisdevice if such conditions exist. The face-to-facepieceseal must be tested before each use. Neverremove the facepiece except in a safe, non-hazardous,non-toxic atmosphere.6. Return to a safe atmosphere immediately if discoloration,crazing, blistering, cracking, or other deteriorationof the facepiece lens material isobserved.7. Users must wear suitable protective clothing andprecautions must be taken so that the air mask isnot exposed to atmospheres that may be harmfulto it.8. Take into account the following factors which mayaffect the duration or the service life.a. the degree of physical activity of the user;b.the physical condition of the user;c. the degree that the user’s breathing rate isincreased by excitement, fear, or other emotionalfactors;d.the degree of training or experience which theuser has had with this or similar equipment;e. whether or not the cylinder is fully charged;f. the presence in the compressed air of carbondioxide concentrations greater than the .04%level normally found in atmospheric air;g.the atmospheric pressure; if used in a pressurizedtunnel or caisson at 2 atmospheres (15 psigauge) the duration will be one-half as long aswhen used at 1 atmosphere; at 3 atmospheresthe duration will be one-third as long; the servicelife of the air mask is based on 1 atmosphere ofpressure.h. the condition of the air mask.Failure to follow this warning can result in serious personalinjury or death.3 TAL 806 (L) Rev. 3 - 10082858


INTRODUCTIONCBRN AGENT APPROVAL LABELThe <strong>MSA</strong> CBRN Agent approved air mask has thisapproval label attached to the carrier and harness.CBRN Agent ApprovedSee Instructions for Required ComponentPart Numbers, Accessories, and AdditionallCautions and Limitations of Use.IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR RESPIRATOR USERS ANDRESPIRATORY PROTECTION PROGRAMADMINISTRATORS1. An adequate respiratory protection program mustinclude knowledge of hazards, hazard assessment,selection of proper respiratory protective equipment,instruction and training in the use of equipment,inspection and maintenance of equipment, and medicalsurveillance. [See OSHA regulations, Title 29 CFR,Part 1910.134 (c).]2. This SCBA may be used only after proper instructionand training in its use as specified in NFPA-1500 andOSHA regulations Title 29 CFR, Part 1910.134.3. Quantitative fit testing should be conducted to determineproper facepiece size prior to using the respirator.A Fit Test Kit (<strong>MSA</strong> P/N 10044576) is available forconducting quantitative fit tests with the Ultra Elite<strong>Firehawk</strong> Facepieces. The facepiece donning instructionsmust be carefully followed when using the respiratorand when conducting fit tests.5. The CBRN <strong>Firehawk</strong> Second Stage Regulator must beflow tested every year and overhauled on a periodicbasis. DESCRIPTIONFIREHAWK <strong>M7</strong> TELEMETRY MODULEThe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Telemetry Module provides the firefighterwith two-way communication with Incident Command.The firefighter’s vital statistics such as cylinder pressure,service time remaining, PASS alarm, low battery alarm,and thermal alarm are transmitted back to IncidentCommand. Also, the firefighter has the ability to be evacuatedremotely by Incident Command. The radio transmitteris located inside of the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> PowerModule.EXTENDAIRE SYSTEMThe ExtendAire System, located on the user’s left chest,enables two users to share a common air supply duringemergency escape. The users can couple the <strong>Firehawk</strong>Second Stage Regulator from one user to the intermediatepressure manifold of the other user. Both users willreceive intermediate pressure air from the donor's firststage regulator and cylinder. The duration of the remainingair supply will be reduced by at least half.The SCBA is approved by NIOSH without inter-connectingtwo users to one apparatus. NIOSH does not certify“buddy breathers”. Therefore, the attachment of thereceiver's regulator to the donor's apparatus voids theNIOSH approval for both air masks.RESCUE BELTThe <strong>MSA</strong> Fire Service Rescue Belt is a personal escapesystem integrated into an FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Carrier andHarness Assembly. The system is designed to provide theuser a means of escape from an elevated position. Use ofthe Rescue Belt must be in accordance with the user’s firedepartment procedures. VISUAL INSPECTION AND FUNCTIONAL TESTSINSPECTIONConduct the Following: Before Use, After Each Use, andMonthlyThoroughly inspect this air mask upon receipt and beforeuse. This air mask is to be used only by trained and qualifiedpersonnel. Read and understand these instructionsbefore attempting to use this equipment.Inspect the entire air mask after it is cleaned and disinfected.NFPA-1500, as well as ANSI Standards Z88.2 andZ88.5, describe three levels of inspection procedureswhich are to be performed. Refer to these documents, orto an inspection program prepared by a health professionalin establishing an inspection program.If the air mask exhibits any of the conditions listed inthe Component Inspection section or if the air maskdoes not function properly as described in theFunctional Tests section, the air mask must beremoved from service. Failure to follow this warningcan result in serious personal injury or death.DO NOT inspect the air mask before cleaning if thereis danger of contacting hazardous contaminants.Clean and disinfect first, then inspect. Failure to followthis warning can cause inhalation or skin absorptionof the contaminant and result in serious personalinjury or death.Never substitute, modify, add, or omit parts. Use onlyexact replacement parts in the configuration as specifiedby the manufacturer. Failure to follow this warningcan result in serious personal injury or death.COMPONENT INSPECTION1. Facepiecea. Inspect the facepiece for rubber deterioration, dirt,cracks, tears, holes, or tackiness.b. Inspect the head harness straps for tears, loss ofelasticity, or missing buckles or straps.c. Inspect the lens for cracks, scratches, and a tightseal with the facepiece rubber.d. Ensure the exhalation valve is clean and operateseasily. The valve must move off the seat and returnwhen released.e. Inspect the facepiece inlet for damage. Ensure thespider gasket and valve disc are present.f. Inspect the facepiece rubber behind the FireHawk<strong>M7</strong> HUD and/or Clear Command CommunicationSystem bracket (optional) for holes or tears.2. FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUDa. Inspect the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD for cracks or othersigns of damage which could allow contaminants toenter the housing.b. Ensure that moisture or debris is not present in thebattery compartment.c. Ensure the battery compartment o-ring on the batterycap is free of debris and not damaged or missing.d. Reassemble the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD to the bracketon the Ultra Elite Facepiece.3. Clear Command Communication Systema. Remove the amplifier housing from the facepieceand inspect the housing for cracks or other signs ofdamageb. Ensure that the battery compartment is free ofmoisture or debris.c. Reassemble the amplifier housing on the facepiece.d. Depress the on/off button on the unit and thenrelease it.e. Look through the facepiece lens. The red LEDshould be illuminated at the top of the amplifier unit.f. Scrape a fingernail lightly across the voicemittermicrophone grille of the voicemitter microphoneassembly.g. Listen for this sound reproduced in the amplifierspeaker.h. Depress and release the on/off button again to turnthe unit OFF. The LED on the amplifier unit shouldbe OFF.4. <strong>Firehawk</strong> Second Stage Regulatora. If the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Air <strong>Mask</strong> is equipped with aquick-connect second stage intermediate pressurehose, inspect the rubber washer for deterioration,dirt, cracks, tears, or tackiness.5. PR14 First Stage Regulatora. Inspect the regulator mounting bracket (attached tothe backplate) for cracks, weakened areas, or signsof heat or chemical related damage.b. Inspect the regulator mounting bracket screws toensure they are secure.c. Inspect the regulator mounting bracket to ensurethat it holds the regulator securely.d. Inspect the pressure relief valve. Ensure that therelief holes are clear and free of debris or other contaminants.Ensure that the pressure relief valve isproperly secured.e. Inspect the hose connections. Ensure that thehoses are properly secured.6. Audi-Larm Alarma. Unthread the Audi-Larm Alarm coupling nut fromthe cylinder valve. Inspect the coupling nut forthread damage.b. Ensure there is an o-ring present and not damaged.Replace the o-ring if it is damaged.c. Ensure that the bell is properly aligned and that thescrews are tight. If the bell is loose, remove thealarm from service.d. Inspect the relief valve for damage. Ensure the relief9 TAL 806 (L) Rev. 3 - 10082858


VISUAL INSPECTION AND FUNCTIONAL TESTSvalve label is not damaged and that the relief valveports are not showing. If damaged, remove the airmask from service and replace the relief valve.e. Reattach Audi-Larm Alarm to the cylinder valve.7. High Pressure Hosea. Inspect the high pressure hose between the Audi-Larm Alarm and the PR14 First Stage Regulator.Look for cuts or severe abrasions. If damage is present,replace the hose.8. Cylinder and Valve Assemblya. Air mask cylinders should be recharged as soon aspossible after use. Cylinders should not be storedpartially charged for two reasons:• If used without recharge, the service life of the airmask is reduced.• The cylinder burst disc vents excess pressure if afull cylinder is over exposed to fire or heat. If thecylinder is not full, it may be damaged before theburst disc vents.b. If the cylinder is less than FULL (within 10% ofrated service pressure), recharge it before storage.Cylinder air must be at least CGA QualityVerification Level (Grade) D respirable air. In fire serviceapplications, <strong>MSA</strong> recommends breathing airquality in accordance with NFPA 1989.c. Inspect the cylinder valve for signs of damage. Thevalve may be opened slightly to ensure it operatesproperly. Be sure to fully close the valve.d. Inspect the cylinder body for cracks, dents, weakenedareas, corrosive agents causing the fibers tobreak or peel, or signs of heat-related damage. Ifthe cylinder is damaged return it to an <strong>MSA</strong> ServiceCenter.e. Check the hydrostatic test date on the cylinderapproval sticker located on the cylinder neck.Fiberglass composite cylinders must be testedevery three years. Carbon-wrapped cylinders mustbe tested every five years.f. Ensure the needle and gauge face on the cylindervalve gauge are clearly visible and that the gaugestem is not bent.It is also essential that the required inspections and testsbe performed on all air mask cylinders in accordance withDepartment of Transportation (DOT) regulations. DOT regulationsrequire that composite cylinders be retired fromservice after the fifteenth year. This does not include cylindervalve assemblies that may be reused. Steel and aluminumcylinder service life is indefinite if proper inspectionand hydrostatic test procedures are followed and theyindicate that the cylinder may remain in service. Contactan <strong>MSA</strong> distributor or sales associate for more informationregarding this policy.Note: ANSI Z88.5 recommends checking cylinder pressureweekly. For maximum safety the cylinders should bestored full or empty (pressure above ambient but less than100 psi).9. FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Carrier and Harnessa. Operate the latch wing on the cylinder band toensure that it opens and closes properly and that itholds the cylinder securely. If the cylinder band andlatch is locked, the latch wing should not turn.b. Inspect the back plate for cracks, weakened areas,or signs of damage due to heat or chemical relateddamage.c. Inspect all harness components for cuts, tears,abrasions, or signs of damage due to heat or chemicalrelated damage.10. FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Modulea. Inspect the gauge hose and power cable for anyvisible signs of damage.b. Inspect for external cracks in the housing andensure the rubber cover is not damaged.c. Ensure the buttons are not damaged or missing.d. Ensure the gauge hose and power cable aresecurely attached to the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> ControlModule.11. FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Modulea. Inspect the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module housing forexternal cracks and ensure that the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Power Module, battery tube, and cylinder stop aresecurely attached to the backplate.b. Inspect the piezo emitters on both sides of theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module. Ensure that the emittercovers are not obstructed by dirt or debris.c. Ensure that the power cable is securely attached tothe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module. The fitting on thepower cable should not be able to be unthreadedby hand.d. Remove the cap from the battery tube. Ensure thatthe o-ring is properly installed on the battery cap, ifo-ring is missing, it must be replaced.e. Inspect the inside of the battery tube. Ensure thatthe battery terminals are not corroded and that thetube if free of moisture and debris.f. Replace the battery cap on the battery tube.12. Record Keepinga. Following inspection, the date and initials of thedesignated inspector should be recorded on aninspection tag. A more detailed record of the operationsperformed can be noted on an inspection andmaintenance log, available from <strong>MSA</strong>. Do not use the air mask if negative pressure cannotbe maintained in the facepiece. Return the <strong>Firehawk</strong>Regulator and facepiece to a certified repairperson.2. Check <strong>Firehawk</strong> Regulator operation.Note: <strong>Firehawk</strong> Regulator functional checks must be conductedwith a full cylinder. Check the pressure gauge onthe cylinder valve to verify that the cylinder is full.a. Push the release buttons on the side of the regulator.b. Ensure that the regulator bypass knob is fullyclosed (clockwise).c. Slowly open the cylinder valve to pressurize the airmask. Ensure that the cylinder valve is completelyopened.d. Returnthe regulator to a certified repairperson.3. FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD, FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module,FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module, and Audi-Larm Alarma. Verify proper function of the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD,FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module, FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> PowerModule, and Audi-Larm Alarm by observing theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module gauge and displaywhen the alarms ring and tone. Perform this testwith a minimum cylinder pressure of 1200 psi for2216 psi air masks, 1800 psi for 3000 psi air masks,and 2000 psi for 4500 psi air masks.b. Pressurize the system by opening the cylindervalve. Listen for the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module tosound and for the Audi-Larm Alarm to ring briefly.c. Look through the facepiece lens at the LED displayof the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Air <strong>Mask</strong>. The LEDs must illuminateand correspond to the system pressure.d. Ensure that the alarm button on the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Control Module and the buddy lights on theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module are slowly flashinggreen.e. Allow the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module to remainmotionless for approximately 20 seconds. Listen forthe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module to sound the lowvolume repeated tones of the PASS pre-alarm.Verify that the alarm button on the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Control Module and the buddy lights of theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module are slowly flashing red.Also verify that the orange LED is displayed in theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD. Ensure that the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Control Module remains motionless until the fullPASS alarm activates. Listen for the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Power Module to sound the loud PASS alarm. Lookfor the alarm button on the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> ControlModule and the buddy lights on the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Power Module to rapidly flash red.f. Reset the PASS alarm by pressing the reset button(yellow) on the side of the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> ControlModule two times within approximately one second.g. To check the manual activation of the PASS alarm,press and hold the alarm button on the front of theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module for approximatelythree seconds. Listen for the PASS alarm to beemitted from the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module.h. Reset the PASS alarm. Press the reset button (yellow)on the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module two timeswithin approximately one second.i. Allow the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module to remainmotionless until the PASS pre-alarm sounds. Shakethe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module to reset the alarm.j. Disconnect the <strong>Firehawk</strong> Regulator from the facepiece.k. Close the cylinder valve fully.l. Slowly crack the bypass valve on the <strong>Firehawk</strong>Regulator to bleed off pressure until the FireHawk<strong>M7</strong> Control Module pressure reading drops belowthe following values:o 530 psi - approximately (2216 psi system)o 750 psi - approximately (3000 psi system)o 1050 psi - approximately (4500 psi system)A single flashing red LED must display in the FireHawk<strong>M7</strong> HUD at the appropriate pressure listed above. Bend forward slightly; resting the carrier on the back.5. Attach the chest strap buckle (optional).6. Fasten the waist belt and pull it tight for a snug fit.Most of the air mask weight should be carried on thehips.7. Stand up straight. Pull the shoulder strap pull tabs outto tighten the shoulder straps. Additional adjustmentsto the waist belt may be needed.8. The shoulder straps and waist strap ends must betucked in and lay flat across the body.BEFORE USING THE AIR MASKListen for any hiss or pop sounds from the Audi-LarmAlarm, if heard, do not use the air mask. As the system pressure rises from 50 to 200 psi, bothvisible and audible alerts activate automatically, indicatingthat the air mask is functioning properly. Suchalerts include a brief ring from the Audi-Larm Alarm, achirp from the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module, and thestart-up sequence of the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD LEDs.DO NOT use the air mask if the Audi-Larm Alarm failsto ring, the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module fails to sound,or the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD fails to light, The air maskmust be checked and corrected for proper operationby an <strong>MSA</strong> trained or certified repairperson beforeusing. If the exhalation valve is stuck,a heavy rush of air around the facepiece may benoticed. A sharp exhalation of air may be needed toopen the valve. If this does not release the valve, donot use the facepiece.5. Tighten the two sidetemple straps in thesame manner asdescribed in step 4.Ensure that the facepiecetabs are nottucked under the faceseal.This device may not seal properly to the face if abeard, gross sideburns or similar physical characteristics(see NFPA-1500 and ANSI Z88.2) exist. An improperfacial seal may allow contaminants to leak into thefacepiece, reducing or eliminating respiratory protection.Do not use this device if such conditions exist.The face-to-facepiece seal must be tested beforeeach use. Never remove the facepiece except in asafe, non hazardous non-toxic atmosphere. Failure tofollow this warning can result in serious personalinjury or death.6. Ensure the back of theharness is centered onthe back of the headand that the facepieceseal provides uniformpressure on the face atall points. Readjust thestraps if needed.3. The FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD allows the user to see thecylinder pressure while wearing the air mask. TheFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module wirelessly transmits asignal to the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD (on the facepiece)while the air mask is in use. The FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUDdisplays the cylinder pressure in one quarter cylinderincrements, by an LED pattern.• As each quarter cylinder pressure has beenreached, a unique LED pattern will be displayed forapproximately 20 second before extinguishing. Thedisplay can be refreshed by pressing and holdingthe mode button (green) on the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Control Module for approximately three seconds.• When 25% of the rated service pressure has beenreached, a single flashing red LED will be displayedand will continue to flash until the unit is turned offor the cylinder has be refilled.• The FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD must be within approximately18 inches of the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module toproperly receive the signal being transmitted.2. When the user of the air mask remains motionless forapproximately 20 seconds, the PASS pre-alarm willbegin to sound. During this pre-alarm, the FireHawk<strong>M7</strong> HUD will display an orange LED, and this LED willextinguish when full PASS alarm has been reached orthe pre-alarm has been reset.4. When an evacuation command has been sent to theuser (if the optional FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Telemetry Module isin use), the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD will display an alternatingred and orange LED until the evacuation has beenconfirmed.5. The FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD has a photo sensor that automaticallyadjusts the brightness of the LEDs based onthe intensity of the ambient light measured outside ofthe facepiece.6. The FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD indicates a low battery conditionby a single flashing yellow LED. When theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module reaches a low batterycondition, a double flash of the yellow LED will be displayedin the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD. If both the FireHawk<strong>M7</strong> HUD and FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module havereached a low battery condition, the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>HUD will display an alternating single and double flashof the yellow LED. If this condition exists, return tofresh air, and replace the batteries immediately. Failure to fully installthe battery cap may prevent the battery tube frombeing water tight.6. Dispose of, or recycle batteries, in accordance with allapplicable federal, state, and local regulations.Turning OFF the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module afterDoffing the Air <strong>Mask</strong>Turn the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module off after doffingair mask; otherwise, batteries will be drained. TheFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module does not shut off automatically.1. Upon returning to fresh air, close the cylinder valvecompletely and release all pressure from the air mask.2. When the pressure falls below 200 psi, turn theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module off by pressing the resetbutton (yellow) two times within approximately onesecond.a. The FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module will beep oncewhen the reset button is pressed once. Pressing thereset button a second time will then sound threebeeps (“bee-bop-bop”) to indicate that the unit isturned off. COLD WEATHER OPERATIONSuggested Procedures for Cold Weather OperationMoisture can cause problems in the air mask if it freezes.However, moisture can cause freezing problems even ifthe surrounding air is above freezing. Air flowing from thecylinder through the first and second stage regulatorsdrops from cylinder pressure to close to atmosphericpressure very quickly. This causes the air to expand andcreates a cooling effect. Although the surrounding temperaturemay be warmer than 32°F, the temperature insidethe regulator may be lower. Any water inside could turn toice and restrict airflow.1. To keep moisture from entering the mask mountedregulator, keep the <strong>Firehawk</strong> Regulator in the beltmounted regulator holder when not in use.2. When the air mask is away from heat, water spray canfreeze on the <strong>Firehawk</strong> Regulator surface. Ice canbuild up and bind the side buttons or the bypassvalve. Before entering or re-entering a hazardousatmosphere, ensure the side buttons and bypass valveare ice-free and operating properly. Periodically checkthe bypass to be sure it is ice-free.3. Moisture can enter through the cylinder valve or couplingnut when cylinders are replaced on the air mask.When replacing cylinders, ensure moisture or contaminationdoes not enter the system. Remove any icefrom these fittings. Wipe the coupling nut threads andcylinder valve threads before installing a new cylinder.Water can contaminate the system and freeze.4. When cleaning the air mask, ensure water does notenter the facepiece or <strong>Firehawk</strong> Regulator.5. Thoroughly dry the facepiece and mask mounted regulatorafter cleaning and disinfecting. AUDI-LARM ALARM WITH URC ASSEMBLYURC (UNIVERSAL RESCUE CONNECTION) ASSEMBLYAll NFPA 1981, 2007 Ed. approved air masks areequipped with a URC Assembly (Universal RescueConnection) fitting. The URC Assembly is a male quick-fillinlet for use by Rapid Intervention Crews for emergencyfilling operations. The system also includes an automaticallyresetting pressure relief valve. The air mask can alsobe equipped with a shoulder mounted Quick-Fill System,unless using a 3000 psi URC Assembly, the 3000 psi URCAssembly can not be used with Quick-Fill System. Foradditional information on using the Quick-Fill System,refer to the Quick-Fill System section of the manual.The URC Assembly may be used for transfill operationsas described in this manual. Only qualified, trained personalStandard Operating Procedures should be developedfor use of the URC Assembly.PRECAUTIONS FOR USING THE URC ASSEMBLY1. The URC Assembly can only be used to fill approvedair mask cylinders.2. The URC Assembly is not to be used as a "BuddyBreather" such that two users are sharing the air suppliedby one air mask cylinder simultaneously doing sowill void NIOSH approval.3. The user is responsible for the air supply, which mustmeet the requirements of Compressed GasAssociation Specification ANSI/G-7.1, QualityVerification Level (Grade) D Gaseous Air or better, witha moisture dew point of not greater than -65°F(24ppm water vapor, normal). In fire service applications,<strong>MSA</strong> recommends breathing air quality in accordancewith NFPA 1989. Pressures at the inlet of thequick-fill hose must not exceed that of the air mask(2216 psi or 4500 psi).4. Using the 3000 psi URC Assembly to fill cylinders: Thecylinder can only be filled to 2216 psi. If the pressureexceeds 2216 psi a relief valve in the URC Assemblywill vent at approximately 2525 psi or as low as 2400psi. A 3000 psi cylinder can only be filled to 3000 psiby using a secondary air supply; the 3000 psi URCAssembly cannot be used for filling a 3000 psi cylinder.5. The user also is responsible for connecting the quickfillhose to an appropriate secondary air supply.6. The cylinder must be inspected for damage beforecharging.7. If filling cylinders in fresh air using the URC Assemblytopping off the cylinder is recommended after thecylinder has cooled from initial fill. Topping off a cylinderafter it has cooled will ensure proper service time.• DO NOT use the URC Assembly as a "BuddyBreather" such that two users are sharing the airsupplied by one approved air mask cylinder simultaneously;doing so will void NIOSH approval.• The URC Assembly must be used by trained RapidIntervention Crews only using procedures developedfor rapid intervention.• DO NOT install a Quick-Fill System and 3000 psiURC assembly on the same air mask. Combiningthese assemblies on the same air mask will notallow the relief valve in the 3000 psi URC Assemblyto open as designed. Failure to follow this warningcan result in serious personal injury or death.• DO NOT transfill (be a donor) using a 3000 psi URCAssembly. The 3000 psi URC Assembly has acheck valve that does not allow cylinders to transfill(be a donor).• Using the 3000 psi URC Assembly to fill cylinders:The cylinder can only be filled to 2216 psi. When transfilling,the secondary air supply pressure must be greaterthan air mask cylinder pressure. Examples of air suppliesinclude: cascade air cylinder refilling systems; high pressurecompressor systems with a fixed reservoir; or aportable air system such as the RescueAire System.DO NOT connect a high pressure air mask to a secondaryair supply with a pressure greater than 4500psi. The high pressure air mask is rated for a maximumworking pressure of 4500 psi. Failure to followthe above warnings can result in serious personalinjury or death.Note: Rapid Intervention Crews should use a separate airsupply such as <strong>MSA</strong>’s RescueAire portable air supply systemto fill the air mask in an IDLH atmosphere.1. Connect the quick-fill hose to the secondary air supply.a. Turn the air supply on.If serious leakage is noticed from either of the twofemale fittings, or anywhere along the hose, disconnectthe female fittings and return to fresh air immediately.Failure to follow this warning can result in seriouspersonal injury or death.Note: If the secondary air supply does not have a sufficientvolume of air, the air mask cylinder will not reach fullservice pressure.3. Compare the cylinder pressure gauge or the FireHawk<strong>M7</strong> Control Module reading to the secondary air supplypressure gauge reading. If the readings are thesame, pressure is equal.4. To disconnect the quick-fill hose after transfilling, pullthe gray sleeve back. The hose fitting and the URCAssembly will separate. AUDI-LARM ALARM WITH URC ASSEMBLYThe audible alarm begins ringing and heads-up displaysystem begins flashing to indicate that the pressure in thecylinder has been reduced to 25% of its rated workingpressure. Remaining service time must be used forescape to fresh air. If the donor's audible alarm beginsringing or FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD/FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> ControlModule begins flashing during transfilling, the donorshould disconnect and preserve his escape time.1. If the donor's alarm is not ringing and FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>HUD/FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module are not flashingand you have sufficient air to transfill to a receiver,(greater than 1000 psi for 2216 psi air masks andgreater than 2000 psi for 4500 psi air masks), followthese steps.a. Remove the 3 foot emergency transfill hose from itsprotective pouch.b. Remove the rubber dust cover from both female fittingson the transfill hose assembly.c. Lift and turn the latch wing to loosen the cylinderclamp.7. Slide the empty cylinder out of the carrier and install afully charged cylinder. Be sure that the adjustablecylinder band and latch is in the proper slot beforeinserting a new cylinder.8. Slide the fully charged cylinder into the carrier, withgauge facing out. Turn the latch wing clockwise 180degrees until it stops. Terminate the filling when the pressure reachesthe maximum service pressure and allow the cylinder tocool to room temperature. If necessary, top-off the cylindersuch that the service pressure is attained with thecylinder at a temperature of 70°F. Close the valves on thecylinder and the filling system and remove the cylinder.Apply a leak solution to determine if there is any leakagebetween the cylinder and the valve. If there is no leakage,the cylinder is ready for use.STORAGEDo not store the air mask or spare cylinders within or nearan area where the air mask can or might be exposed toany substances that will or might attack any part of the airmask, causing the air mask to not perform as designedand approved.Prior to storing the air mask in a jumpseat, ensure there isno interference between the air mask and the seat.DO NOT drop the cylinder or bump the valve knob. CLEANING AND DISINFECTINGCLEANING AND DISINFECTINGDepending on the cleaning policy adopted, either a designatedperson or the user should clean each device aftereach use. ANSI standards suggest that users should betrained in the cleaning procedure. Confidence PlusCleaning Solution (P/N 10009971) from <strong>MSA</strong> is recommended.It cleans and disinfects in one operation. Itretains its germicidal efficiency in hard water to inhibit thegrowth of bacteria. It will not deteriorate rubber, plastic,glass, or metal parts. Refer to the label for user instructions.• DO NOT use any cleaning substances that can ormight attack any part of the air mask.• DO NOT use alcohol because it may deterioraterubber parts.• If not rinsed thoroughly, cleaning agent residuemay irritate the wearer’s skin.1. Preparing Solutiona. Follow the instructions with the Confidence PlusCleaning Solution.b. If the Confidence Plus Cleaning Solution is notused, wash in a mild cleaning solution, rinse thoroughly,and submerge in a germicide solution forthe manufacturer’s recommended time.2. Clean and Disinfect the Facepiecea. Remove the mask mounted regulator from the facepiece.b. Unthread the thumb screw of the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>HUD and remove the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD from thefacepiece bracket.c. Remove the Clear Command CommunicationSystem (if used).d. Thoroughly wash the facepiece (and nosecup) in thecleaning solution. A soft brush or sponge can beused to clean the soiled facepiece.e. Rinse the facepiece and components in clean,warm (110°F) water (preferably running and draining).f. Clean the pressure-demand exhalation valve bypressing in on the stem with a blunt object andflushing it with clean water.g. Allow the facepiece to air dry. Do not dry the partsby placing them near a heater or in direct sunlight.The rubber will deteriorate.h. Operate the exhalation valve by hand to be sure itworks properly.Note: Do not force-dry the parts by placing them in aheater or in direct sunlight. The rubber will deteriorate.When the facepiece is thoroughly dry, store the facepiecein the plastic bag in which it was shipped.3. In general, only the facepiece requires cleaning anddisinfecting after each use. If the air mask is soiled(i.e. heavy smoke residue or dirt accumulation) use asponge damp with mild soap solution or use asoft/medium bristle brush to remove deposits thatmay interfere with normal operation of:a. FLOW TEST AND OVERHAUL REQUIREMENTSFLOW TEST AND OVERHAUL REQUIREMENTSThe <strong>Firehawk</strong> Regulator and Audi-Larm Alarm must beflow tested and overhauled at specific time intervals.These Maintenance Procedures must be performed by atrained repairperson or at a certified service center.Contact your <strong>MSA</strong> sales representative or call the <strong>MSA</strong>Customer Service Center at 1-877-<strong>MSA</strong>-3473. They willsupply the information needed to meet these requirements.Annual flow tests are stated as a requirement in NFPA1852, Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance ofOpen-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA),2002 Edition, which further emphasizes their importance.Although this standard relates to SCBA used in the fireservice, <strong>MSA</strong> requires that a flow test be performed atleast annually on all fire service and non-fire service SCBAand combination respirators that use a pressure demandregulator.The required replacement/overhaul schedule for <strong>MSA</strong> airmasks is based on apparatus usage on an individualbasis. The frequency required for air mask overhauldepends upon how often the apparatus is used. <strong>MSA</strong> airmasks must be overhauled based on the actual level ofusage of the air mask, rather than on time alone.<strong>MSA</strong> air masks must be flow tested every year using an<strong>MSA</strong> approved flow test device. The following table summarizes<strong>MSA</strong>’s required frequency for overhaul and flowtesting: An overhaul kit (<strong>MSA</strong> P/N 10048942) is available.<strong>MSA</strong> recommends the routine inspection of all elastomericmaterials including, but not limited to those in the VisualInspection and Functional Check section of this manual.A decision to retire apparatus should be based on an airmask’s performance data and whether that data meetsthe specified level of performance as defined in maintenancerequirements from <strong>MSA</strong>.*The unit of air mask use is defined as the consumption ofone entire cylinder of air. QUICK-FILL SYSTEM1. To connect the quick-fill hose to the secondary airsupply.a. Turn the air supply on.If there are leaks from either female fitting, or alongthe hose, depressurize the hose and correct the problem.Such leakage can result in increased fill time.2. Attach the quick-fill hose to the shoulder mountedquick-fill fitting.a. Remove the rubber dust cap from the male quick-fillfitting. Be sure that the cylinder valve is fullyopened.b. Remove the rubber dust cap from the female fittingon the quick-fill hose.c. Push the female fitting of the hose onto the malequick-fill fitting until it snaps in place. Pull on thehose to be sure the connection is secure. Fillingimmediately begins when the female fitting fullyengages with the male fitting.d. After approximately 45-60 seconds, the pressurebetween the secondary air supply and the air maskcylinder will be equal.Note: If the secondary air supply does not have a sufficientvolume of air, the air mask cylinder will not reachmaximum service pressure.3. Compare the cylinder pressure gauge or FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Control Module reading to the secondary air supplypressure gauge reading. If the readings are the same,pressure is equal.4. When transfilling in a contaminated atmosphere andthe dust cover will not stay on the male fitting becauseair is leaking:a. Immediately reconnect the quick-fill hose to seal offthe leak and return to fresh air.b. If the hose will not reconnect, reach behind andclose the cylinder valve. EXTENDAIRE SYSTEMINSTRUCTIONS FOR USEGENERAL INFORMATIONTwo air masks equipped with an ExtendAire System canshare a common air supply during emergency escape.Users can couple the <strong>Firehawk</strong> Second Stage Regulatorfrom one user to the intermediate pressure manifold of theother user. Both users will receive intermediate pressureair from the donor's first stage regulator and cylinder. Theduration of the remaining air supply will be reduced by atleast half.The SCBA is approved by NIOSH without inter-connectingtwo users to one apparatus. NIOSH does not certify“buddy breathers”. Therefore, the attachment of thereceiver's regulator to the donor's apparatus voids theNIOSH approval for both air masks.Air Hose: When used as a combination apparatus, thedevice shall be supplied with respirable air through airsupply hose with a minimum length of 8 feet and maximumlength of 300 feet within the pressure range of 85-90psi. A maximum of 12 sections of straight or uncoiled airsupply hose may be used in making up the workinglength of hose. When using coiled hose, a maximum ofsix sections may be used and each section is consideredto be 50 feet long. Hose sections vary from 8 feet to 100feet lengths. The air-line connection to the apparatus is tobe made through approved quick-disconnects only. Thepurity of the air supply is the responsibility of the user. Therespirator is approved only when the air supplied meetsthe requirements of the Compressed Gas AssociationSpecification G-7. 1989 quality verification level (Grade) Dfor Gaseous Air.Use this emergency escape breathing system for lifethreatening emergencies and simulated training exercisesonly. Failure to follow thiswarning can result in serious personal injury or death.Hose Connection Procedure1. Remove the dust cap from the quick-disconnect onthe donor's intermediate pressure manifold block.2. Disconnect the receiver's second stage regulator hosefrom their intermediate pressure manifold block bydisengaging the Snap-Tite quick-disconnect fitting.3. Connect the receiver's second stage regulator hose tothe donor's manifold block.a. Push the socket of the receiver's hose firmly overthe plug on the donor's manifold.b. Check that the hose is properly routed and not tangledwith any other part of the apparatus (i.e. neckstrap, chest strap, etc.)c. Check for full engagement by pulling at the quickdisconnectto assure that the socket does not separatefrom the plug. The apparatus of the donor willsupply air for emergency escape of the two individuals.The duration of the remaining air supply will (atleast) be reduced in half.4. Upon reaching a safe, non-toxic atmosphere, a stagingarea or performing other emergency egress procedures,uncouple the receiver's hose at the quick-disconnect.5. FIREHAWK <strong>M7</strong> TELEMETRY MODULEFIREHAWK <strong>M7</strong> TELEMETRY MODULEThe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Telemetry Module is designed to allowthe air mask to communicate with a remote base stationwhile in use. The FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Air <strong>Mask</strong> with FireHawk<strong>M7</strong> Telemetry Module installed will transmit vital statisticssuch as cylinder pressure, temperature alarm (if thermalalarm is enabled), service time remaining, and PASS alarmto the base station. The base station also has the abilityto send an evacuation command to the air mask. TheFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Telemetry Module uses a special version ofthe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module and FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> PowerModule.All basic functions of the air mask are the same as thosedescribed in the During Use section of this manual exceptfor the following differences:• Turning the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module On: Whenthe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module is activated in thepresence of a remote base station, the air mask automaticallybegins to log on to that base station. Whenthe air mask is successfully logged on to the base station,a radio link indicator will appear on the display ofthe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module.• Evacuation Signal: The air mask has the ability toreceive an evacuation signal from the remote basestation after it has been successfully logged on to thebase station. When an evacuation signal has beensent by the base station, the “running man” icon willappear, and flash, on the display of the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Control Module and a unique audible alarm will beemitted from the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Module. Theevacuation signal must be manually confirmed by theuser by pressing the reset button (yellow) twice withinapproximately one second. This confirms the evacuationsignal by sending a confirmation signal back tothe base station. Once the evacuation signal hasbeen manually confirmed by the user, the “runningman” icon will stop flashing and remain on the displayuntil the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module has beenturned off.• PASS Alarm: The PASS alarm will sound and functionnormally with the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Telemetry Module.When the air mask emits a full PASS alarm, a signal isautomatically sent to the base station to alert IncidentCommand.• Thermal Alarm: When the air mask is exposed totemperature conditions that warrant a thermal alarm, asignal is automatically sent to the base station to alertIncident Command.• Low Battery: When the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Power Modulereaches a low battery condition, a signal is automaticallysent to the base station to alert IncidentCommand. A signal is not sent to the base station ifthe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> HUD has a low battery condition.• Data Log: The data logging feature of the FireHawk<strong>M7</strong> Control Module logs the status of the radio link tothe base station as well as any evacuation signals thatthe air mask has received.• Radio Link Indicator: The FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> ControlModule has a radio link indicator located in the upperleft portion of the display. When this icon is displayed,the air mask is logged on to a base station and withinrange. When the radio link indictor is not shown, theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module has not been logged onto a base station or is out of the range of the basestation.• Turning the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module Off: Toturn the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module off, press thereset button (yellow) twice within approximately onesecond. If the air mask is logged on to the base station,there will be a delay between the two presses ofthe reset button and the actual shutdown of thedevice. Before the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module completelyturns off, the base station must remove the airmask from its registry. This causes the slight delaybetween pressing the reset button and the actualshutdown of the device.ID Tag (PN 10083875), for use with FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Telemetry ModuleWhen the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Telemetry Module is used with theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Air <strong>Mask</strong>, an ID Tag is used to assign a firefighter’sname to the air mask. The name assigned to theair mask will be displayed for that air mask on the <strong>MSA</strong>Accountabiity System Software. The name ID Tag must bescanned into the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module at the startof each shift (every 24 hours by default).Note: The FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Interface Software can be usedto change this default to allow a name ID to be permanentlyassigned to the air mask until a new name ID Taghas been scanned.A team ID Tag can also be used to assign a team/truckand position to the air mask. If a team ID Tag has beenscanned into the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module but aname ID Tag has not been scanned, the team ID will bedisplayed on the SCBA monitoring software to provideaccountability even if the firefighter forgot to scan thename ID Tag. Once a team ID Tag has been scanned intothe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module, the team ID will remainwith the air mask until another team ID Tag has beenscanned. If a team ID or name ID has not been assignedto the air mask, the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module serialnumber will be displayed as the firefighter’s ID whenlogged onto the base station.A base station ID can be used to assign a specific basestation ID to an air mask. When more than one base stationis present and actively monitoring at an incident, anair mask with an assigned base station will search for thepreferred base station first to log on to, and if it does notfind the assigned base station within 20 seconds, it willsearch for the first available base station and log on to it.If a base station ID has not been assigned to the air mask,43 TAL 806 (L) Rev. 3 - 10082858


FIREHAWK <strong>M7</strong> TELEMETRY MODULEit will log on to the first base station that it finds once theunit has been turned on. Once a base station ID tag hasbeen scanned into the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module, thisbase station ID will remain with the air mask until anotherbase station ID tag has been scanned.The ID Tag has a space for the user to place a label inwhich the ID information can be written on the outside ofthe ID Tag for easy identification.Before using the ID tag, inspect for damage or cracks inthe case. If damage is found, discard and replace the IDtag.Scanning the ID Tag into the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> ControlModuleNote: The FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module must be turnedoff to scan the ID Tag.Prior to pressurization ofthe air mask and duringinspection, the user can“tag in” by depressing andholding the top mode button(green) until the word“tag” appears in the display.While “tag” is displayed,hold the ID tag asshown.Correct ID Tag OrientationThe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module will display "ok" whenthe ID Tag has been successfully read and the unit willautomatically return to sleep mode. If the word "data"appears on the <strong>Firehawk</strong> <strong>M7</strong> Control Module display beforethe ID Tag has been successfully read, push the mode buttononce to skip "data" mode and return to sleep mode.Press and hold the mode button to return to "tag" mode.The "data" mode is used to change the device settings orread the data log while using the <strong>M7</strong> Interface Software.The "data" mode can be entered directly by pressing theholding the mode button until "tag" is displayed. While"tag" is displayed, an additional push of the mode buttonwill toggle the device into "data" mode.The most recent ID Tag data that is stored in the FireHawk<strong>M7</strong> Control Module will be used as the identification forthe air mask on the <strong>MSA</strong> Accountability System Software.If no ID Tag data has been assigned to the air mask, theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module serial number will be usedas its identification on the base station PC screen.The ID tag is not designed to be taken into a fire. TheID tag can also be used as an accountability tag.Using the Base Station with the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Telemetry ModuleThe FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Telemetry Module is designed to workin conjunction with a remote base station unit. This basestation unit must be connected to a personal computer orlaptop before use. Refer to the <strong>MSA</strong> AccountabilitySystem Software instructions (PN 10068929) for moreinformation.Follow the PC or notebook computer manufacturer’srecommendations for exposure to environmental conditionsto prevent damage to the system. Failure to doso may cause system failure and the loss of monitoringcapability on the PC or notebook computer.Using the <strong>M7</strong> <strong>Firehawk</strong> Air <strong>Mask</strong> with FireHawk <strong>M7</strong>Telemetry ModuleLogging the Air <strong>Mask</strong> on to the Base Station1. Turn on the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module on by openingthe cylinder valve or by pressing and holding thealarm button.2. A helmet icon representing the user of the air maskwill appear on the base station PC screen.3. When the base station has established contact with theair mask and all initial information has been obtained,the radio link indicator will appear in the upper left cornerof the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module display.4. Periodically check the status of the radio link indicatoron the display of the FireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module. Ifthe signal strength indicator begins to flash, thismeans that the air mask is out of range from the basestation. The signal strength indicator will stop flashingwhen the air mask returns within range of the basestation.If the signal strength indicator does not appear on theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module display, the base stationhas not logged the unit on and can not monitor thestatus of that firefighter.Logging the Air <strong>Mask</strong> off of the Base Station1. Once the user has returned to fresh air the FireHawk<strong>M7</strong> Control Module may be turned off.2. Close the cylinder valve and purge the remaining airfrom the system using the <strong>Firehawk</strong> Regulator bypass.When the pressure falls below 200 psi, turn theFireHawk <strong>M7</strong> Control Module off (sleep mode) bypressing the reset button twice in approximately onesecond.
