SAINT PASCAL PARISHPage 2WELCOME BISHOP MANZI am out of town until Monday and Bishop Manzwas kind enough to volunteer to offer Mass at Saint Pascalin my absence. We are blessed to have the Episcopal Vicarfor Vicariate IV with us. What is an Episcopal Vicar??? Andwhat is a Vicariate IV??? That’s just “Church talk” for theauxiliary bishop in our Archdiocese who assists the Cardinaland oversees our particular area or vicariate. It’s a little likeChicago is divided into wards, so the Archdiocese is dividedinto vicariates. I have the pleasure of working with BishopManz as dean. OK, now you want to know what a dean is. Adeanery might be compared to a precinct. In my capacity asdean I assist the bishop essentially as a liaison to fourteenparishes, two high schools and one shrine in our immediatearea. Vicariate IV has five deaneries each with a dean. Andnow you know more than you ever wanted to know about allthat. Thank you, Bishop Manz for being with your people atSaint Pascal!LENT BEGINSAsh Wednesday is this week! The schedule is in today’s bulletin. Please plan on coming to receive your ashes as a publicsign of your willingness to repent and live by the Gospel. Also, Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. Regulationsare included in this bulletin as well.ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEALThanks to all who have made their pledges to this year’sAnnual Catholic Appeal. This week we go for one moreround in taking pledges in the pews. As tedious as it mayseem, that’s the way the Archdiocese instructs us to do itand the record shows we do get many more pledges thesecond week. I’ve asked that each giver consider donatingat least $300 over the course of the next year. That willcover our mandated goal of $39,947 and bring enough of arebate to us so we can continue on many projects here. Iknow some can do more than $300. I also understand thatsome people are having a tough time these days. Any giftyou can give is a blessing.HAVE YOU BEEN CONFIRMED???For many reasons it seems there are a good numberof practicing adult Catholics who were never confirmed.Did you know that to be a fully initiated Catholic, you needto be confirmed? So what does that mean? Well, most importantare the graces received in the sacrament. TheSeven Gifts of the Holy Spirit help us deal with life’s problemsand dilemmas. And we all need a little divine help, don’t we? And did you know that if you are not confirmed, you cannot be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor? Thatcan be a big let down to parents when they find out a familymember or friend isn’t eligible because they are not confirmed! Now is a golden opportunity to be confirmed. If you are apracticing Catholic and have been baptized and receivedthe Eucharist, you can be confirmed through a programstarting right here at Saint Pascal on Monday, February 27 th .Please check the notice in this bulletin and sign up today!Ash Wednesday is THIS WEDNESDAYPrayer Services and Mass Schedule6:30 AM Prayer Service8:00 AM Mass9:00 AM Mass3:15 PM Prayer Service5:30 PM Polish Mass7:00 PM MassAshes will be distributed at prayerservices and during the Masses.Ministers of Care: Ashes will beavailable to you for the homebound.Come & celebrate Mardi Graswith us at ourPalms & Paçzkí Party! On Tuesday, February 21st, there will bea prayer service at 7:00 PM in the Dakin Street parkinglot during which the old blessed palms will be burned(weather permitting). SAINT PASCAL PARISHSOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAULSAINT PASCAL CONFERENCEFamily is the nucleus of all Communities.Regrettably, there are families whosestructure is fractured because some membershaven’t spoken to each other for years. Alienation hasbecome such a part of family history that it is almost impossibleto overcome. When family members have taken sides, this creates tension at family celebrations and reunions. Noone, including parents or guardians, can force anyone toforgive whatever actions or words created the dispute. Aself-righteous anger keeps alienated member(s) from forgivingor from accepting forgiveness. So, they may missfamily celebrations of life and joy, and find themselves seriouslyhurting mentally and spiritually at family wakes andfunerals. When we pray the Our Father, we pray that Godforgives us as we forgive others. This prayer reminds usthat forgiving is a divine act of mercy. When we forgive otherswe are acting in and by God’s power. All we can do is topray that one of the alienated memberswill take the first step by asking forgiveness...orby forgiving... for whatever it isthat created the rift, instead of waiting forthe other(s) to take the first step.If you are 18 or older, have beenBaptized and received theEucharist but have not received theSacrament of Confirmation.Good News! Classes will be held here at St. Pascal forAdult Confirmation!Starting Monday, Feb 27th at 7:00 PM.Contact Mr. Javier Castillo at the Office of Divine Worshipto register at 312-534-8047 / jcastillo@archchicago.org.See the class schedule below.Mondays, Feb 27; Mar 5; Mar 26; April 16; April 30.PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRYBlessed prayer shawls will be on displayand available Sunday, February 19th inRoom 100 from 8:30 - 11:30 am.If interested in joining our ministry, wemeet the 1st and 3rd Wednesdaysof the month at the Ciezadlo Senior Centerat 1:00pm. Those who arebound by this may take one full meal. Two smaller mealsare permitted if necessary to maintain strength accordingto one’s need, but eating solid foods between meals isnot permitted.Join Us!Thursdays at 6:30PM -in the Church.Fridays at 9:30AM - Senior CenterThe Small Christian Communties of St.Pascal continue to meet and share inthe action of God in their lives throughThe Professionof Faith. We are doingthis by using the Catechism of theCatholic Church for direction.Week Two Focus: The Paschal Mystery: Jesus’ Death andResurrectionThe Paschal mystery ... stands at the center of the GoodNews that the apostles, and the Church following them, areto proclaim to the world (571). The Paschal mystery hastwo aspects: by His death, Christ liberates us from sin; byHis Resurrection, He opens for us the way to a new life(Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs 654).Jesus fulfilled the Law perfectly, but He often offended theteachers of the Law, for he was not content to propose Hisinterpretation alongside theirs but taught the people “asone who had authority, and not as their scribes” (Matthew7:28-29) (CCC 581). Jesus did not destroy the Law: he fulfilledit (CCC 577). He upset the Pharisees when he showedHis merciful conduct toward sinners. He was seen as blasphemingwhen he made himself God’s equal or was speakingthe truth. It was, in fact, His role in the redemption of sins ... [that]was the true stumbling-block (cf. Luke 2:34; 20:17-18;Psalm 118:22) for the religious authorities (CCC 578-589).Many of the leaders of the Temple at that time were soafraid that all they could think to do was to get rid of thisperson who called them to be something more than theywere. Jesus has issued that same call to all of us.Becoming more familiar with what we believe as Catholicscan help us to better relate to the action of God’s work inour daily lives. You can find more about The Profession ofFaith and in the Catechism of the Catholic Church by readingparagraphs 512-570. If you don’t have a Catechismyou can get the information on line at:www.scborromeo.org/ccc.htm .
