<strong>QEP</strong>: <strong>Engaging</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>First</strong> <strong>Year</strong> <strong>Student</strong><strong>West</strong> <strong>Texas</strong> A&M <strong>University</strong>technology. While efforts are made to standardize equipment in <strong>the</strong> SMART classrooms, eachroom is unique. Most SMART classrooms are equipped with <strong>the</strong> following:• Instructor station installed with a PC or Macintosh computer• High resolution LCD video projector for computer and video display• Smartboard or projection screen• VCR, document camera, and audio system• Connectivity to <strong>the</strong> university network• Commonly used software• Connections for guest laptopsOur university must sustain active and planned faculty development that fosters <strong>the</strong> explorationof technologies for teaching and that connects technology to engaged teaching practices.Identifying <strong>the</strong> ObjectivesAs WTAMU seeks to support faculty members’ abilities to engage students in active, meaningfullearning, we have come to recognize <strong>the</strong> vital role technology plays in that process as well as <strong>the</strong>critical role technology plays in faculty development.In order to support faculty efforts to infuse technology into <strong>the</strong>ir professional lives as professorswho are engaged in practices of teaching, researching and serving <strong>the</strong> wider community,WTAMU will examine its role in sustaining <strong>the</strong>se efforts. The objectives of faculty technologydevelopment include:Objectives Assessment OutcomesEnable all WTAMUfaculty to infuse teachingtechnologies into <strong>the</strong>irteaching practices.(Objective 1)• Number and efficacy of formalfaculty training opportunities throughcampus workshops, video streamingtutorials and online learningcommunities.• Institutional support of informallearning opportunities throughmentoring.• Formal and informal learningopportunities make technologyinfusion a part of <strong>the</strong> universityculture and a teaching expectation forgood teaching practices.Provide faculty with accessto current and emergingtechnologies(Objective 2)• Number of Internet drops, ceilingmounted projectors and documentcameras in each campus building.• Wireless connectivity.• The university will actively support itsfaculty’s and student’s technologyabilities to use technology for learningand teachingSupport <strong>the</strong> costs ofteaching and learningtechnologies(Objective 3)• Unit plan and budget requests • <strong>Student</strong>s have ability to make choices• Amount of requests fundedbetween various technologiesEncourage criticalexamination of teachingand learning technologies(Objective 4)• Number of articles or presentationsgiven examining academictechnologies and <strong>the</strong>ir usage• <strong>Student</strong>s become informed,responsible, creative and articulatedecision makers”27
