DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNINGCongratulations are due to our students on an excellent start to our school year. This year, the College themeis “Celebrating Unity through Diversity”. It is a wonderful theme that challenges us through its inherent tension. If either Unity or Diversity break free of the other the outcome for a community is debilitating. A communitydominated by Unity becomes bland and withered. A community dominated by Diversity can quickly becomeunworkable. When these opposites combine at a College like Academy, there comes the opportunity tocelebrate the Unity of our Mercy ethos and our striving for excellence with the Diversity of the many culturesthat form our community and the differing learning styles and learning pathways that can be found in ourclassrooms. The Learning Street Project : As a young teacher in the early 1980s, I experienced my first computer in aschool. It had 4 Kilobytes of RAM! How can you possibly compare the learning opportunities for students inschools with the high tech facilities of laptops, ipads, interactive whiteboards, flip cameras, wikis, intranet, internet!!!It is an exciting time to be a teacher. At Academy, we have embraced these opportunities with what we arecalling the Learning Street Project. In ‘concrete and carpet’ terms that means a wonderful renovation of themiddle floor of the E-Building with flexible learning spaces and a technology rich environment. In ‘virtual’terms, we all know that modern information processing devices brings us opportunities for learning in any‘street’ we happen to find ourselves. The reference to the ‘Learning Street’ acknowledges that in modernschools any classroom is a place from which to explore and experience learning in ways free fromgeographical limits and boundaries.Year 10 Students Selecting to Study a Unit 3&4 Subject in 2011: Year 10 students will make their 2012VCE subject selections in August. This seems to be a long time off and students and parents will be given alot of information and support for this process. However, those Year 10 students who may be thinking ofapplying to study one Unit 3&4 subject (ie a Year 12 subject) in their Year 11 studies need to be aware thatthe success of any application to study a VCE Unit 3&4 Study in Year 11 is dependent upon their academicefforts in this semester. For a successful application, both the Year 10 Semester One and Two Reports must have:• An average of a B for all subject grades• No E, E+, UG or NS grades for any subject• No days absent without College ApprovalThese criteria have been established to provide for an objective and fair means of assessing a student’sreadiness to accelerate her VCE studies. The Unit 3&4 acceleration subjects that are available for students in Year 11 are: Business Management,Psychology, Texts and Traditions, Food Technology (Students should have studied a Food Elective in Yr9/10), Further Mathematics (if a student also selects Mathematical Methods (CAS)) and Music SoloPerformancePersonal Learning Goals: As part of the VELS reporting package, on Thursday February 17, all Year 7 – 10students will formally establish a set of about three Learning Goals for this semester. At the end of thesemester, they will reflect upon their efforts to attain these goals. These reflections will form the basis of theStudent Personal Learning Goals component of the Semester Report.Supplementary SAC Sessions: If a student is unable to attend school on the day of an Assessment Taskbecause of illness or a significant family matter, the College requires that a parent contact the College on theday of the absence. When she returns to school, the student must submit a Missed SAC Notification form. These forms can be found in all Homerooms. In most cases, the student will complete the missed task at aSupplementary SAC session. These sessions are held on Mondays and Thursdays after school. If the missedtask is of one period in duration, the student will be required to attend the Supp Session from 3.30 to 4.20. Ifthe task was two periods, she will be required to stay until 5.10. This system seeks to provide a way ofcompleting missed assessments that is fair, efficient and supportive to the student.Mr Mark Hyland, Director of Teaching and LearningAcademy of Mary ImmaculateMercy Secondary Education Inc. I look forward to working closely with your daughters in 2011 and look forward to meetingmany of you personally. On Monday February 7, the Year 11 students have started the year with a whole day orientation daydedicated to study skills and work habits.
