VISIT OF SAM CAWTHORN TO THE ACADEMYStudent in Years 9-12 were privileged to listen to guest speaker, Mr Sam Cawthorn, who visited the College onTuesday August 7 th . In a vibrant and dynamic presentation Sam challenged the students to live to the full andto gain a greater appreciation of the preciousness of life.Sam spoke from personal experience having experienced a serious car accident following which he wasdeclared clinically dead for 3.5 minutes. He survived but suffered serious arm and leg injuries which led to theamputation of his right arm above the elbow. Prior to the accident Sam was involved in the arts as a musicianand dancer. Inspired rather than daunted by his disability, Sam is intent on proclaiming loudly and clearly hismessage.Sam spoke about the necessity of having “strong desires” rather than “weak wishes” informing the studentsthat if they didn’t know who they were and what was important to them, others would decide for them. Heencouraged students to live fully and decisively, focusing on the future rather than lamenting and holding on tothe past.Sam concluded his presentation by singing and playing his guitar, (using an implement attached to hisprosthesis) the latter skill demonstrating in action his tenacity and determination.Academy of Mary ImmaculateMercy Education Limited. These newarrangements could have significant consequences for the funding received by our school and it is vital that our schoolcommunity is aware of the facts about school funding. I will be seeking your support to defend the right of our school toreceive the government funding it needs to continue to offer a quality education, while keeping our fees as low as possible. There has already been a lot of misinformation about school funding in the media. In particular, claims have been madethat Catholic and other nongovernment schools receive more funding than state schools. These claims are simply wrong.Students in Catholic schools receive only three quarters of the government funding given to students in governmentschools. Over the coming months, I will provide you with more detailed information about funding in our school newsletter.I encourage you to take an active interest in this information and be ready to participate in this funding debate.More information about Catholic School Funding can also be found at: www.fundinginfo.catholic.edu.auDEPUTY PRINCIPALUpcoming dates - Term 3Wednesday, August 15 th Staff PD Afternoon.Thursday, August 30 th Parent / Teacher Interviews for Years 7 to 10.Friday, August 31 stMid Term Break – no classes.Students will have a shortened 6 period day on August 15 th & 30 th . The staff and I wereextremely impressed by the courage and enthusiasm that wasshown for each and every activity. Many of the girls were facedwith situations that took them out of their comfort zone, and totheir credit, they were able to step up to the plate and conquertheir fears. At no stage did the light showers of rain put a dampener ontheir attitudes and willingness to give the activities a red hotcrack. On numerous occasions the students were given theoption of opting out of the activities to go indoors due to a bit ofdrizzle; however they all couldn’t pass up an opportunity tomaster the high ropes course or hit a bullseye on the archeryboard! The talent show was filled with a variety of acts, including acomedy item from Yu Yu Liu and Sophie Middis that couldhave rivalled Hamish & Andy; an amazing solo performancefrom Isabelle Danaher; however the award for bestperformance went to Achol Akec, Elizabeth Wol, Agum Deng,Nada Ajak and Pauline Makenene for their performance, whichscored a perfect 10 from all three judges. The girls thendanced up a storm with music from the DJ (Mr Agneskis),where the awards for best dancer could have gone to the entire year level.Academy of Mary ImmaculateMercy Education Limited. News from the Canteen @ AcademyAfter some discussion it has been decided to trial a number of new items in the Canteen @ Academy. The sale of fresh fruit has always been an issue that caused a variety of responses; in the past we have offered fruitsalad during the 1 st and 4 th Terms with varying degrees of success, but not the sale of actual whole fruit. However, as ofMonday 7 th August , fresh fruit is being offered for sale. We have started with apples, oranges, mandarins and bananas. The price of the fruit is held at a reasonable price so that as many girls as possible will avail themselves of theopportunity to buy fresh fruit. When a greater variety of fruit becomes available and if the girls demonstrate an interestin buying fruit then we will be able to offer other fruit. Early signs show that the girls are purchasing the fruit we offer.Breakfast has been something we have offered at the Academy for the past 3 years. Toast, hot chocolate, juice andcereal have been available for anyone who feels the need to have something before the school day begins. Anotheritem now available is warm porridge with or without a drizzle of honey. Some parents have expressed concern about the Giant Freddos and Caramellos that are available in the Canteen, butthere are times when the girls feel the need for some chocolate. So in an effort to allow the girls to have somechocolate and to take note of parental concerns, we have decided to stock the standard sized Freddos and Caramellosin a variety of different flavours.Along with the above changes we would like to point out that we have a large variety of fresh food available in theCanteen. Salads, sandwiches and rolls can be ordered for lunch every day, sushi is available 3 days a week and our dailyspecials try to get the mix of food the girls like with a healthy choice (food is not fried – except for fried rice). With thanks,Mrs Elisa Lauretta and Mrs Maria Nigro, Canteen ManagersAn invitation is extended to all past teachers, students and familiesto join us in celebrating the 150 th Anniversary of St Joseph’sCollingwood on Saturday August 25 th commencing with Mass at2.00pm.This will be followed by the launch of our newly complied historybook which will be available for purchase.Refreshments and school tours will be offered.
