VETRUNNERISSN 1449-8006 Vol. 35 Issue 3 — September 2013Patron: Jack Pennington OAMEmail: vetrunner@actvac.comReporter Strikes Gold at Blewitt’s!Run/Walk Handicap—28 July 2013Reporter: George KubitzkyA cool but clear morning greeted the 160 starters forthe three handicap events at Blewitt’s Pines.Unfortunately there aren’t too many pines left now and thefuture of those remaining also looks bleak, as theresidential expansion of Canberra spreads further intosome of the previously forested areas surrounding the city. The Thomas series long course had to be shortened to6.2km (normally 7km), due to these development works.THOMAS SERIES 6.2KM 87 STARTERSThe handicapwinner of this eventwas M70 BernieRogers, who camein sixth overall in anet time of 51:47.Bernie strugglessomewhat witharthritis in the feetthese days but hasmanaged toaccumulate 242handicaps, all in theThomas series, withhis first event beingat Forest Drive on 28October 2004. Berniewas somewhatsurprised to win onthis difficult coursebut was very pleasedall the same. He hasnow won three gold medals, two silver medals and onebronze medal. Bernie used to run in the Stromlo Pines areaaround the old Deek’s Drive location and met some runnersat the time and thus found out about ACT VeteransAthletics Club. The second placegetter was none other than M70Bryan Thomas. Bryan’s first event was at the LakeGinninderra course on 26 April 1981 and he has nowcompleted a total of 290 handicaps, second only to GeorgeHanzar. Bryan came in eighth across the line about 35seconds behind Bernie in a net time of 37:57. Like mostparticipants, the hills on the way back weighed heavily onhis mind. However, he soldiered on and then added a PBlater that afternoon on the indoor rowing machine, anotherof his sporting interests. What a way to top off the day! This was Bryan’s third silver medal to add to his tallyof one gold and five bronze accumulated over his illustriousNo keeping this guy in his boxcareer. His only gold medal was won on the Farrer Ridgecourse on 29 May 2013In third place was W50 Karen Daniels-Howe, havingcrossed the line in 14 th position overall.Karen completed the course in a net time of 33:02 andhas now completed 133 handicaps, 47 Thomas and 86Frylink with her first being at Fadden Pines on the 25 July1996Karen has now accumulated five silver and threebronze medals. Her performance at Blewitt’s was her bestever WR of 72.2% and itappears the Ironmantraining has paid greatdividends. Karen only justcompleted her first everultra triathlon at PortMacquarie recently, (3.8kmswim/180km cycle ride42.2km marathon) in justover 14.30 hours. Well doneKaren! The best performers on theday in the Thomas serieswere M50 Rod Lynch whowas 22 nd across the line ina net time of 25:06 andWR% of 84.2. Another M50Gordon Holgate had thefastest time of 24:50 net, representing a kilometrepace of four minutes.FRYLINK SERIES 3.5KM 40 STARTERSThis event was won by yours truly (M60 GeorgeKubitzky), and capped off a wonderful July in which Icelebrated my 60 th birthday and managed to sustain someconsistent running, without injury. I was extremely happyto discover that I had run my fastest ever short course timefor this course (16:58 net) and put that down to the factthat I have been injury free and able to get in sometraining runs including some long Cotter runs with othergreat friends and that has also contributed to my lowestweight for some nine years. That said, I only just managed to haul in secondplacegetter W75 Lorna Burdon, who completed her 210 thhandicap, having first joined in 1984. Lorna added thesilver medal to her previous three gold, eight silver andfour bronze medals. It appears that we have a great rivalryin this event as I have pipped Lorna on a few occasionsThe Find Thirty every day® campaign is aninitiative of the Heart Foundation proudlyfunded by the Department of Health,Western Australia.

now but I am sure the she will get her revenge sooner thanlater. The third placegetter was W80 Judy Forbes whocrossed the line in seventh position overall and a net timeof 29:04 and a very respectable WR of 81.4%. Judy has nowcompleted 42 events (nine Waddell and 33 Frylink) andaccumulated two bronze medals. Judy was ‘over the moon’to discover she had acquired third place.Judy is a keen member of the Tuesday Group and hasbeen a member of ACTVAC since 2007, having beenintroduced to the Club by her daughter Beverley and son inlaw, Alan. The best WR performances in the Frylink belonged towomen; W80 Gwen Gleeson topped the list at 85.3%, W80Judy Forbes at 81.4% and W45 Katie Forestier at80.3%.Fastest runner on the day was M45 David Wallis, whowas ninth across the line in a net time of 14:25 at a 4:07 kmrate.WADDELL SERIES 3.5KM 33 STARTERSThe first, second and third across the line were theactual placegetters and it was an all ladies affair withanother club stalwart W70 Sue Counsel claiming the goldmedal ahead of W40 Nadine Morrison in second and W65Maureen Scutter securing the bronze medal.Sue has now completed 262 handicaps, the most by anywoman in the club and the vast majority of these have beenin the Thomas series, before a fall and injury earlier thisyear prompted her to start doing the walks.Sue first participated at the East Basin Handicap on the17 February 2005 and has previously won a gold medal, onesilver medal and four bronze medals. Her success in thewalks has come from some expert advice received onimproving technique, so watch out there could be somemore medals to come!Nadine Morrison was ‘mortified’ to discover that shehad finished second. Having fallen pregnant and expectingtwins Nadine had to switch from the Thomas seriesrecently to the Waddell and was obviously ‘inspired’ by hergreat news. Everyone wishes you all the best for your newfamily additions!Nadine has been a member since arriving from Mackayin 2007, where she knew Debbie Cowell, whorecommended Vets to her and husband Brett Morrison.Maureen Scutter was delighted with her third placing,as it was her best ever kilometre rate in the 38 Waddellhandicaps she has completed since her first one at NorthCurtin on 29 February 2004.Her husband, Richard Scutter, has been a member ofVets for a long time and Maureen first started walking withthe Tuesday Group and then transitioned to the handicapsas well. She enjoys the different locations of the handicaps. The best efforts against WR came as usual from M80John Suiter with an 88.1% (net time 26:04) and anotherM80 Dave Mackenzie with an 83.0% and a net time of27:07.The fastest over the distance went to M65 RodGilchrist with a 24.38 net time for the course.Once again our thanks go to all the officials and raceorganisers, who ensure these events, are conducted asseamlessly as possible.JOHN BAKKER: 250John is one of our ‘Originals’, having competed in theclub since its very beginning. He ran in our first evermonthly handicap held on the original Jogalong course inStromlo Forest in June 1979. Most were in the long courseuntil 2001 then most were in the Frylink Series and moreSeptember 2013 Vetrunner — Page 5Milestoners: John Bakker (250) and Jennie Gilchrist (50)recently in the Waddell walk handicaps. To date John haswon five medals (two gold and two silver medals and abronze medal).John’s proudest honour in veterans’ athletics is thathe was the first ‘Legend’ of our annual ACT Veterans’ HalfMarathon having completed ‘20 out of 20’ in 2001. Onlyminutes after accepting the award and acclaim for thisoutstanding achievement of durability he was called backon stage to receive his first ever trophy for the event asbeing third M65. John maintained his remarkable streakand completed his 25 th consecutive Vets’ Half Marathon in2006. Unfortunately, knee problems forced him to withdrawat 5km from the 2007 event, which would have been his26 th consecutive completion.John’s unique achievement of having completed everyone of the first 25 ACT Veterans’ Half Marathons from1982 to 2006 was recognised by establishing an award inhis name. Henceforth, anyone who completes 25 of thisannual event shall be presented with the perpetual BakkerTrophy and be given the title ‘Bakker’. To date, apart fromJohn, four others have earned the title – they are BernieMillett in 2008, Ken Eynon in 2010, Bernie Rogers in 2011and Bob Chapman in 2012.JENNIE GILCHRIST: 50Although Jennie’s previous sporting experience waslimited to school sport she was probably fitter than theaverage young woman. Jennie grew up within a farmingfamily and every property in the district at the time had atennis court and she was a regular social tennis player.Jennie joined the club at the same time as husbandRod, in 1996, but didn’t actually participate for many years. Her debut handicap was on the Innabaanya course at theGirl Guides camp at Majura in November 2007. Most havebeen in the long course although a few have been in theWaddell Series walk handicap. To date she has won fourmedals (three gold and a silver).Jennie is a regular participant with the ACT Raceand Fitness Walking Club as well as with the TuesdayGroup. She has completed two ACT Vets’ Half Marathons.(T-shirts—written by Bryan Thomas)

Page 6 — September 2013 VetrunnerWhy do I need to check the Start Lists? The simple answer – so you will know your correct StartGroup for your event in the Monthly Handicap Series onthe day.So, you have checked the lists, found your name andmemorised your Start Group. But that’s not all theinformation next to your name. As a check for the StartGroup there is a Start Time in the next column. This is thetime (look at the big clock near the Start Line) at which youstart in your event. But, there is more! You notice a column headed,“Eligible”. What does the term mean and how does it affectyou? If you have a “Y” – you are eligible for points andawards. You have been competing regularly, at least twoevents of the last five held.If you have a “1” – you have only participated once inthe last five events and you will not score any points in thisevent. However, once you complete this event you will beeligible for points and awards in your next event (as long asyou have participated in at least two events of the last fiveheld). If you have a “0” – you have not participated in the lastfive events. You will need to compete in at least two eventsof the previous five before you are able to score points andare eligible for awards.Firstly, have you missed the last six events? If so, youare now considered as a ‘new starter’. You have to go to theNew Starters Table and register again. Negotiate a StartGroup. The accuracy of your estimation doesn’t matter asafter your first return the computer will adjust your group. The next run will also not count towards point scoring. However, on your third run you are back in the fold, scoringpoints.Maybe you are not a financial member? That can beeasily checked at the New Starters Table and if confirmed, then you can rectify that status. Currently non memberscan participate in two ACTVAC events permembership year on a ‘come and try’ basis. In the remote case that you are a victim of technology,as you always suspected, be polite with the officials as theywill now be grappling with that very technology thatcaused you angst. Now that you understand the information on the StartGroup Lists please check them at every event and reportany discrepancies to the New Starters Table.Remember, you should aim to participate from thecorrect Start Group in the correct series (Thomas, Frylink,Waddell) at each event. This helps the event to run as itwas designed, a handicapped event giving everybody anequal chance to win on the day. As well, everybody shouldfinish within minutes of each other. But what if you have looked everywhere and your nameis not on the lists? Suddenly, your hidden feelings aboutcomputers and computer lists come to the fore. Are you avictim of technology? Possibly, but unlikely.Enjoy your eventHandicap SubcommitteeVets Chuck Wagon—seeking assistanceThe Handicap Sub-committee is seeking interest fromany vets member who would be keen to take on the task ofensuring that the refreshments provided from the ChuckWagon are present at the monthly handicaps. The committee has an offer to park the Chuck Wagonbut would like someone to take on the responsibility ofbrining it to and from the handicap venues, ensuring thewater containers and gas bottles are filled and the urns areset up. An associated task which could be done bysomebody else, is to bring the supplies (milk, biscuits, tea, coffee, milo, sugar). For further enquiries please contact: Bernie Millett(62999065) or John Alcock (62863213).Footprints—this month’s VMA newsletter includes apreview of BrazilThis month’s Victorian Masters Athletics newsletter—Footprints—includes a preview of Brazil for thoseinterested in and entering the XX World Masters AthleticsChampionships Stadia in Porto Alegre, 16-27 October 2013.Visit http://vicmastersaths.org.au/ to read Footprints orvisit https://wma2013.com/en for all the Championshipdetails. You can follow the latest Championship news viaTwitter @wma2013. Iknow he said that because I was there at the time. Now Iunashamedly embrace music as part of my runningexperience, although I haven't gone as far as to make itpart of my racing experience. There is an excellent scientific American article onrunning and music. See http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=psychology-workout-musicI will list what I think are the main reasons that musicgoes together with running, but refer to the article abovefor more.1. Distraction. This is particularly important intraining, or perhaps in a long race where the goal is just tofinish. There is a role for dissociative running, days whenthe running itself is painful and keeping one’s mind on thecompany, the scenery, or the music, reduces ones attentionon the pain, the tiredness, the stresses of work, family, andother pressures. When I go on a long run by myself that iswhen I find music a most pleasant distraction.2. Motivation. My playlist contains all my favouritesongs – of course! So I really look forward to listening tosome of them on the run. It adds to the sense ofanticipation before running. What usually motivates me torun is knowing it is making me fitter, knowing it ispreparation for my next race, hoping it is keeping illness atbay, and looking forward to meeting up with my runningpartners. If there are no running partners on the day, music is a good substitute.3. Enjoyment. Music is intrinsically enjoyable; as isrunning (once you're out there). Put the two together, andwow.4. Pacing. I don't necessarily run at the pace of a song;some do. But the occasional song on the playlist will helppick up the pace, and a five-minute burst during a long runis an excellent training strategy. If you want to be moreintentional about pacing to music, there are plenty of BPMsoftware options to help you pre-plan your running rate.See http://lifehacker.com/5622382/creating-the-ultimateexercise-playlist,except you want the pace much fasterthan their proposed 120 to 140.Detractors usually instance distraction as a bad thing.Well then, use your brain, run where it is safe to bedistracted. And running in company, chatting, is just asdistracting. Maybe you just don't like music? Well, again, Ido!Percy was well ahead of his time. He knew that therhythms and flows of music would reinforce the rhythmsand flows of running. Can another visionary see how wecan marry the two and attract more people to the verynatural sport of running? Gyms do it, how about runningtracks? As I understand it though, music will be of little helpwhen you are racing flat out. That is because racing is anassociative activity, because you need to ‘welcome pain’when racing, and because it is difficult to lift above what isalready a 100% effort. But music as part of training willhelp you train better, achieving the increased fitness levelsneeded for faster race times.Observation of athletes here in Canberra seems to bearall this out; those runners who train with music seemhighly dedicated and are darn good runners; those athleteswho race with music seem to be going along well withinthemselves. But of course, there might be some very goodreasons why you would not want to bust a gut every timeyou race. So, load up your iPod or smartphone and enjoyyour running!Geoff MooreRunning and training advice athttp://geoffmoore.blogspot.com

Page 16 — September 2013 VetrunnerWritten by Jack PenningtonDoris is aged 87 years and John 90Doris’ breakfast consists of corn flakes with 100ml oforange juice. At noon she has 200g of mixed rootvegetables, including pumpkin and green beans and 100g ofprotein, which changes by day such as roast lamb steak andkidney pie or egg quiche or braised steak or baked ricecheese and bacon. Her 6pm meal consists of two slices ofwhole grain toast with vegemite and cream cheese spread. In winter she adds soup.John’s diet is identical except he includes 100g ofcarrots to the noon meal and on one day he has grilled fishand chips. He also adds 200g of apple pie or 200g of fruitwith ice cream – he also avoids sugar, fat and salt. AlsoJohn’s breakfast includes 50g of rolled oats with 50g ofsultanas plus 100ml of milk (nothing else). Later in theevening he has 100g of mixed nuts.I point out the reference to weight is to indicate thefrugality of the diet.John and Doris drink about 1.5L of fluid daily, in thecase of Doris she has tea or coffee plus water with pills, butJohn has black currant syrup with four parts water.Of course those athletes in strenuous daily trainingwould at least double this diet.John was a distance runner and competitor from 1940to 1993, he served three years in Assam and Burma fromJuly 1943 to August 1946 in WWII.In 1944 he had to exist on 1.5L of water plus dried fooddaily for eight months, which reduced his weight to 50kg.From 1946 to 1993, while running daily, he drank 4Ldaily of fluid, mainly fruit-juice. However, when he was onholidays and did not run he had three episodes of Hydrocele(water retention). More importantly when he retiredcompletely he had three episodes of Pericarditis (watercompressing heart function), no cause or medicalprocedures were offered and in fact the specialistcommented – “I am buggered if I know what is wrong withyou”. X rays had confirmed an enlarged heart andultrasound found heart function normal except as JohnThrowing Handicap DatesTrish 6161 3635On diet and the reasons whypointed out his heart rate was 130bpm at rest instead of55bpm – there was no heart damage. At the third admission to Cardiology a CAT-scan foundwater in the Pericardium. An ECG showed a huge ‘T’ wavewhich indicated the heart was slow to refill. Cure – adiuretic pill to expel water.Incidentally John was a full member of ACT SportMedicine from 1980 to 1985.In 1966 John persuaded the Medical Director at ANU toestablish a fitness testing laboratory. John became themanager (1963-1983) as an extracurricular gift to theuniversity. It allowed him as a senior coach in middle distancerunning to train experimentally on the hydraulic treadmill(invented at the ANU Research School of Physical Science).References: Prof Dick Telford, ANU Medical School; DrBryan Furnass, former Medical Director of ANU; andProfessor Peter Fricker, former Director of the Institute ofSport. Finally –The choice of food and drink should be governed bymoderation because excess of anything in life can be poison, even water. People who live sedentary lives should notdrink more than two litres of fluid per day. Those onmedication such as Warfarin (rat poison), which preventsblood clots, should not eat spinach or yoghurt because thatfood includes high Vitamin K which is the antidote toWarfarin. Likewise those on similar medication should notdrink tomato soup because one cup will contain 500-2000mg of potassium, which will interfere with manymedications.I know this because I have lived long enough to learn byexperience. However, it is always beneficial to do your ownresearch.Trivia – Olympian Dave Power was also inflicted withPericarditis when he retired, he was third in the 1960Olympic 10km. He also won the 10km and marathon in the1958 Empire Games.Throws Pentathlon DatesJayne Hardy 0421 610 053Sept 28Oct 26Nov 23hammer and javelinshot and discushammer and javelin and annualpresentations and Christmas functionSept 15 10am start Oceania Throws PentathlonOct 13 10am startNov 17 9am start Heavy Weight PentathlonDec 15 9am startWinter Throwing Championships—5-7 October
