You will see in this Vetrunner(Page 22) advice that the Club willhold two general meetings onThursday, May 22 at the West DeakinHellenic Bowling Club. You may ask – why two generalmeetings? The explanation lies in theproceedings at our 2002 AnnualGeneral Meeting. A Motion on Noticehad previously been forwarded to allmembers to the effect that changes tothe Club Constitution be made as setout in an attached single Motion. ThatMotion contained a number ofelements, some with very minorchanges of wording, others containingimportant changes relating to votingprocedures and the duration ofconsecutive terms for which apresident could be re-elected.When the matter came to debate,it was pointed out that the framing ofall these proposed changes as a singlemotion meant that members werefaced with an “all or nothing’ choice. The opportunity to debate theimportant implications of theelements of the Motion, making adistinction between minor and majorchanges in the Constitution, was lost.As a result, the members directedthe 2002-2003 Committee to resubmitthe proposed changes as separatemotions to be put to members at aFROM YOURPRESIDENTSpecial General Meeting prior to the2003 AGM and for those changes to bedebated and voted upon individually.Accordingly, a Notice of Motionhas been prepared, the proposedchanges have been separated, andmembers will have the opportunity todiscuss the changes and vote on themas separate motions. This will be done in a SpecialGeneral Meeting commencing at6.30pm on May 22. A three quartersmajority is required for approval ofconstitutional changes. This is set outin the ACT Associations IncorporationAct.At 7.30pm I will open the 2003Annual General Meeting. Reports byoffice-bearers and sub-committees willMay Vetrunner — Page 3provide the opportunity for membersto ask about all aspects of ouroperations. A draft budget for 2003-2004 will be presented. The final item is the election ofoffice-bearers for 2003-2004. JackPennington has agreed to benominated as Club Patron once more.Election of a new ACTVACCommittee for 2003-2004 will follow. This is an opportunity for newmembers to step forward to seekelection. Indeed, all positions fallvacant at the conclusion of OtherBusiness. At the time of writing, personal commitments have led acouple of current Committee membersto inform me that they will not renominate.Indications are that, as inprevious years, a good balance of newand continuing members ofCommittee will eventuate. But that isfor you, the members, to decide.JOHNTHANKS TO ALL THE MEMBERS OF ACTVACOn behalf of Margaret and myself I would like to thank the ACT VeteransClub for their card and kind thoughts following Marg’s recent heart attack.Marg is now on the mend and making a full recovery at home and is gettingback to walking and regaining her confidence. It just goes to show that no matter how well you look after your health youcan never be sure that things these won’t happen to you. Page 4— May VetrunnerTHE RECORDS STILL KEEP COMING AS AGREAT SEASON COMES TO AN ENDMarch 20One of the big items coming from ourtrack and field this week was yetanother of Jayne Hardy's amazing feats. Most club athletes would be veryhappy to break an Australian recordwhile competing, but Jayne didn’t just goone step more but took a second step andbroke the record for a third time. All this happened down on the lowerfield during the hammer competition.Jayne’s record breaking throw was aheave of 44.98m beating her ownAustralian record of 44.20, and then acouple of throws later she broke it again, this time by a “tiny wee centimetre”.Then for the third time in the matter ofsix throws Jayne got in a 45.03 andthat’s where her Australian HammerRecord is at the present. The second record of the meet camein the penultimate race of the nightwhen a quartet of young and goodlookingladies took part in the 4x400mrelay. This is a great achievement asalready this season we have had relayteams in the M70 age group and now it’sthe turn of the W65s with Terri Jones.Cory Collins, Gwen Gleeson and AnneYoung establishing a new record of7:12.5. It gets even better when one ofthat quartet was over seventy. The rulesfor breaking relay records allow onerunner from a higher age group. And that wasn’t the end of it for oneof the quartet, Terri Jones. No soonerhad she got her breath back she wasback in action in the spiral handicap inthe first group that goes off on go. Eventhough she had a fair lead, Terri went onto win the 8-lap event. I went off in acouple of groups behind her and by thefourth lap seemed to be making someinroads to her 80m that she had at thestart. However, the longer the race wenton the stronger she became and I ran outof puff, but did manage to stage a prettygood last 80m at full pelt knowing thatMick Corlis was right behind me. Terrigot the 50 points, Mick 49 and JohnMorton 48, I of course didn’t qualify forpoints. There were 27 runners in therace. For my mind the spiral handicapsare a big attraction and maybe nextseason the organisers of the track andfield program will include more of thispopular kind of event. I recall when thespirals started we had 12 races, six ineach half of the season that ranged 5, 6,7, 8, 5, 6 before the New Year and then a7, 8, 5, 6, 7, 8 in the second half withrunners taking their ten best pointscoresof the 12. Something to think about nextseason, especially when there is such adrop off in numbers that have attendedtrack on Thursday evening. I am awarethat the program has got better over thelast two seasons, offering sprinters atleast two events, sometimes three, andboth the jumpers and the throwers ableto take part in at least three events. With the distance runners, by far themajority of the clubs members, weshould strive to make inroads to attractthem to come along to our Thursdayevening track program. The Parlauf over5000m is definitely not by a long shot adistance runners event. At first it was 10sprints over 100m for each of the fivememberteams. Now each of the fivememberteams have to run twice over100m and 200m and once over 400m.Not many distance runners will getdown to the shorter events, rememberhow the “slow twitchers” are well suitedto the longer distances and those withthe “fast twitch” muscles are definitelysprinters. Anyway we have at least sixmonths to fix that, though thecompetition sub-committee should reallyfind out how the distance runners reallyfeel about track. And by the time youread this that competition sub -committee will have already put out asurvey of the members in relation totrack. It will be an interesting survey aseach of the questions will have anmultiple answers.Getting back to the night of March 20ACT VETERANSATHLETIC CLUBSupported byKINGSTON PHYSIOTHERAPYSPORTS INJURY CENTREKENNEDY ST., KINGSTONAlso Supporting ACTVAC are:THE WEST DEAKIN HELLENIC BOWLING CLUBINSTANT COLOUR PRESS IN BELCONNEN

and with only one more meet before theThursday nights are our own again, here is more about what went on in thatpenultimate meet.At the hammer, besides JayneHardy’s superb throws, Bob Banens wasgetting in an over 40m throw as wasSharon Gibbins. Jan Davies, TrishThomas and Ray Green were all onlyjust below that 40m mark with the nextbest Jenny Bourke’s 27 plus metres,Ewen Drummond’s over 25m, PeterNeill’s 24 plus and Mary Wahren’s 23plus efforts. The other two in thecompetition were Steve Wallace andRobert Kennelly both breaking the 20mmark.Later back up at the main stadiumthese hardy (not Jayne Hardy) throwerswere back in action in the discus andshot.First in the discus and going throughthe age groups, M30 Steve Wallace got asecond win of the night as did M50 BobBanens, M55 Ray Green, M65 PeterNeill and M75 Ewen Drummond. AttilaSpaits M60 and Rad Leovic M70 joinedthe winner’s list. In the runners-uppositions, Roger Stewart and LloydDonnelly were second and third in theM50s and Robin Whyte second in theM60s. And that wrapped up the men’sdiscus. For the women in the W40s JayneHardy was followed by Sharon Gibbinsand Margaret Mesher. In the W50sMargaret Taylor had a win over CarmenCarlon and in the W55s Trish Thomasfinished ahead of Raine Thompson.Going up an age group Jen Bourke wasahead of Jan Davies after their allowedsix throws. Mary Wahren took out theW65s.Going over to the shot the patternwas almost a blue print of the other twothrows, indeed as it has been all season.Three wins in three competitions camefrom M30 Steve Wallace, M50 BobBanens, and M75 Ewen Drummondwith Rad Leovic making it two out oftwo. The only runner-up was RobertKennelly in the M50s.For the ladies Penny Paabo was inher first and only throw of the nightwinning the W30s. Then came W40Jayne Hardy’s third win as well as W55Trish Thomas with W60 Jan Daviesmaking it two out of three. MargaretTaylor also had a second win in theW50s. This time the placegetters in theW40s were Sharon Gibbins andMargaret Mesher and Carmen Carlon inthe W50s and last but not least JenBourke in the W60s. That was all forthe throwers and now they have onlythree more competitions before some ofthem cross over to Perth for thenationals. In the jumps the pole, the high andthe triple were on this week’s card.John Donovan was the onlycompetitor in the pole vault and his bestheight of the night was a 2.05. In thehigh it was that man again John thistime putting in a solid 1.40, the best ofthe seven competitors. Second and thirdin the M30s were Dion Devow and CraigEdwards respectively. M65 RayBramwell, M70 Rad Leovic, W30 PennyPaabo and W50 Margaret Taylor all hadwins.Only Ray and Penny went on to takepart in the triple winning the M65s andthe W30s.Because of lack of competitors in the2000 and 3000m steeplechases it wasdecided to put on a one only 3000m runand even they only managed ninerunners. The best of them was MickCorlis and John Morton winner andrunner-up in the M40 age group withNick Mesher third. Graham Burke ledthe M50s over the line from MichaelGardner, and Bob Parker. Roger Abbottwas the lone M65 in the event as wasW35 Lisa Wilson and W55 MargaretMcSpadden.Seven race-walkers and one fitnesswalkerwent off on Mike Adler’s gun todo five laps of the track. In the M40sLachlan Wilkinson was just under aminute ahead of Mark Worrall at thefinish. M50s Geoff Sims led RickHatcher home, this was Rick’s firstouting at track this year, indeed forseveral years. In the M60s Robin Whytewarmed-up for his throwing events withan easy win from Nigel Crew. RaineThompson was the only female and shementioned that she did a PB of a fewseconds. I was the only fitness walkerand I kept Raine company for the fivelaps, keeping in mind that I hadintentions of running in the 8-LapSpiral that was down for an 8.20pmstart.The first of the two sprints, notincluding the 4x400m relay, was over60m this week. We had the usual goodspread of heats with Mike Adler doing agood job getting them sorted out ingroups of five by their approximatetimes. In the end it was pretty close forthe best time of the night with bothMichael Rutter and Dion Devowstopping the clock at 7.5 seconds withAndrew Malone just a tick off that at 7.6and Kevin Matthews on eight secondseven. In the M30s besides Dion andAndrew, Craig Edwards was thirdahead of John Donovan. Then looking atthe rest of the age groups, RogerMay Vetrunner — Page 5Stewart won the M50s, Col Burns theM55s, Michael Roche the M60s and RayBramwell the M65s.For the ladies one of the throwerspopped over to show the others how itwas done. Sharon Gibbins put in asmart 8.6 to stay ahead of JenniferKrevatin’s even nine seconds. MaureenRossiter won the battle of the W50sahead of Jill Brown and Janice Bains, and the diminutive Gwen Gleeson wonthe W70s.The second sprint was over 200mand it was the final event in the DanielsSprint Handicap. The runners weresplit into four heats, two of fivecompetitors and one each of four andthree. In that first heat Alan Nordenhung on to win in 21.60, and as itturned out later, posted the best time ofthe event. Others to finish in order inthat first heat, in order, Ray Bramwell,Jim White, Michael Roche and KevinMatthews. Heat two was probably thebest contested heat of the event withRichard Faulks edging out CraigEdwards by a tenth, then came JohnDonovan two tenths in third leavingDion Devow and Craig Edwards fourthand fifth respectively. Heat 3 was an allfemale affair with Sharon againshowing her competitors a ‘clean pair ofheels’, Jill Brown was second, MaureenRossiter third and Carmen Carlonfourth. In the final heat it was PennyPaabo and Jennifer Krevatin to take onthe wily Roger Stewart. In the end itwas ‘all over red rover’ for Roger as hewas relegated to third spot with Pennygetting in a 22.10 over the line andJennifer a 22.40.Surprisingly there weren’t all thatmany runners interested in the 1500mand it’s usually one of the mostcontested races at track. Maybe with thechampionships finished and only onemore meet to go maybe runners wish toput their spikes away till next spring. Inthat faster heat it looked like ColinFarlow and John Morton were going tofight it out right down to the line asJohn stuck onto Colin’s shoulder likeglue. But it must have been a prettypoor quality of glue as going into thethird lap Colin picked up the pace andsoon established a handy 20m lead. Inthe end he cruised home with a 4:32.7with John second ahead of Ken White.Nick Mesher was third in that M40 agegroup. For the rest the M30s went toAndrew Malone, Andrew is one of thetop sprinters in the club and does notnormally go anything more than 400m.In the M45s George Kubitzky wassecond to Ken with Neil Boden winningthe M50s. Going up to the M55s Geoff

Page 6—May VetrunnerBarker was the winner ahead of AlanNorden. For the ladies Maria O’Reilly was toogood for Kathy Sims with Lisa Wilsonthird, all three winning their respectiveage groups. Others to finish wereAmanda Walker second in the W35s andMargaret McSpadden winning theW55s.In the 4x400m relays I have alreadymentioned that record breaking run byfour of our W65s. However, in the M30sthe quartet of Andrew Malone, CraigEdwards, Dion Devow and JohnDonovan fancied their chances ofbeating the age group record of 4:21.1.However, although they all ran well andhad good baton changes it was all alittle too much for them and theyfinished some five seconds outside thatM30 record. Then there was only the final 8-lapspiral to go. I have mentioned TerriJones and myself along with Mick Corlisgetting the top points from JohnMorton. Well looking at the resultsagain it seems that Trevor Jacobs ranan 11.46 to post the best net time for themen and Kathy Sims was home in 14.37the fastest of the women.HammerM45 Steve Wallace 21.76M50 Neil Boden and his crew willnow be able to relax after they had heldyet another top year of competition. It is unfortunate that although thecompetition sub-committee has tried togive everyone in all disciplines of trackand field a fair go, some of the eveningscould have been better supported. However, it was good to see that thefinal night, which also acts as thepresentation of the annual awards waswell supported. As most of the regular track andfield people know the club offers a widerange of handicap events giving thechance for everyone to get to the top inthe Daniels Sprint races, thePennington middle distances events, theBoag Awards for sprinters and hurdlers, the Throwers Track Series and last butnot least the Adler Series Handicaps forthe distance runners.End of season performancesAlthough this meet was the finallyfor the season there were still some topperformances as well, including yetanother two records be written to ourlong list of record- breakingperformances that we have seen thisseason.First to the race walks where ouroldest athlete this season, M80 AudunFristad, set about establishing a newM80 record over 800m. Audun comes upfrom the South Coast regularly, usuallyto compete in the throwing handicaps. This year he has combined the two andwas at the track to present the annualFristad Awards for Excellence inPerformance for our male and femaleathletes. He also took the chance toparticipate in the walking event andwith a 6:45.3 established an M80 record.Other performances in the walk sawtwo females “scoop the pool”, firstly LisaWilson recording the best time of eightwalkers in a remarkable time of 3:50.1and in second position, more than aminute adrift, was Monika Short with a4:54.6 and although technically a‘Fitness Walker’ I was third with a5:06.5.

The other record of the meet camefrom W35 Jenny Pluck in the 400mwhere she ran a 60.07 to take a secondoff her own record set only a couple ofweeks ago. Jenny took the chance andran in the fastest heat that includedguns of the likes of Ken Telfer, CraigEdwards, Colin Farlow and RichardFaulks. Craig was having a bit of awhinge before they got the gun abouthis drawing of the outside lane again. However, it must have been a goodomen for him has he produced a PB in56.1 only beaten by Ken’s 53.5. Colinwas third and Richard fourth. It was awelcome return to the track for TonyBooth who has been out all season witha problem achilles, he still managed totake the M60s with what is for him aslow run of 1:21.7. Other age groupwinners were M45 Nick Blackaby, M50Pat Stakelum and M55 Alan Norden. For the “fair sex” besides Jenny’s PB,Vicki Matthews, Maureen Rossiter (yesfor once Maureen didn’t break a recordin the 400m like she has been doingrepeatedly), but her 65.9 was prettyclose to her record breaking mark of65.26 set in the Club Championships acouple of weeks earlier), Val Chesterton,Cory Collins and Gwen Gleeson had agegroup winsUnlike the last couple of weeks therewas quite a good roll-up for the3000/5000m races that we have beenopening the program with each week.As they got underway it was a fourpersonrace for the first couple of lapswith Andrew Bishop, Mick Corlis, SteveAppleby and Michael Leahey in theleading bunch. First to drop off, as thepace heated-up was Steve, then Mickleaving Andrew and Michael to fight itout between them. It wasn’t till partway through the final lap that Michaelmade his move and never looked back.He eventually won the 3000m in 10.01with Andrew 10.06, Mick 10.27 withSteve managing to hold onto fourthposition with an 11.17 from the fastfinishing Ken White who was also timedat 11.17. Other age group winnersincluded M50 Terry Levings, M55 KenEynon and M60 Graeme Small. For the women Kathy Sims, although far from her best, finished on12.14 well ahead of Amanda Walker’s12.56. Others to take out age group winswere W40 Pam Faulks, W55 MargaretMcSpadden and W65 Terri Jones.Of the five that went on to completethe 5000m, three of them were M40sand they filled the top three positions.Nick Mesher in what was his best effortof the season ran a 19.32, RogerPilkington 19.47 and Don Smith rightsmack bang on 20 minutes. The othertwo were M60 Mike Worsley and M65Peter Trotter. In the 100m the first three in each ofthe heats were Michael Roche from AlanNorden and Nick Blackaby then VickiMatthews was too good for RogerStewart and Sharon Gibbins and finallyKen Telfer had too much speed for DionDevow and Kevin Matthews. We had for the first time theunusual race distance of 1000m that is abit too much for the sprinters and tooshort for our distance experts, but manyof them had a go anyway. The third heat was a beauty thatincluded the all conquering ColinFarlow against John Morton, John hasbeen playing ‘second fiddle’ to Colin thisseason and the only time I canremember Colin not winning a race wasagainst Anthony Perry in a 1500mevent. Colin, as he usually does wentout in front with John right on his tailnot giving an inch, just after going intothe last 400m John came right up onColin’s shoulder and going down theback straight pulled in another gear andsoon established a ten metre gap thatfor some reason Colin wasn’t able to doanything about. Going up the last 100mColin certainly had a go and narrowedthe gap but left it all too late with Johnhome in 2:47.0 to Colin’s 2:47.6, withAnthony Perry third in 2:51.2. In theother age groups wins went to M45Michael Leahey, M50 Neil Boden, M55Kevin Chamberlain, M60 Mike Worsleyand M65 Peter Trotter. For the three girls in the fieldCharmaine Knobel was ahead ofMargaret McSpadden and Terri Jonesat the finish.Only Roger Stewart and ColinRobbie took on the 100m hurdles withRoger posting a 20.2 and Colin a 21.8.The final track race for the seasonwas the parlauf relays in which each ofthe five team members have to run the400, 300, 200 and 100m distance. Rightfrom the beginning, after RogerStewart’s team of Tony Booth, AndrewMalone, Anthony Perry and JennyPluck had completed their 400m it wasobvious that they were the team to beat. But how much and in what time. However, maybe I wasn’t giving theother teams, especially the “RobertBarbaro Five”, any respect as they ateinto that lead and the end were onlybeaten by a matter of less than a minuteby Roger’s team on 14.52. Jim White’steam was third in 15.50 and DionDevow’s mob 15.52.Three throws and two jumps were upfor grabs in the final field events of theMay Vetrunner — Page 7season.In the heavy weight newcomer DavidTow won the M40s as did M45 SteveWallace, M50 Robert Kennelly and M75Ewen Drummond. For the ladies W60Jan Davies with a 15.45 was the best ofthe four that were in the competition, with Nola De Chazal, second in that agegroup, had a PB of 7.28. W40 JayneHardy and W55 Trish Thomas were theother age group winners. In the triple jump Ken Smith andNick Blackaby were first and second inthe M45s as were Colin Robbie and RayBramwell in the M65s. Sharon Gibbinswas the only woman in the field. Then in the last jump of the meet, the long jump, M30 Andrew Malone5.14 and M40 Kevin Matthews 5.29headed the field with Nick Blackablytaking the M45s and Colin Robbie andRay Bramwell again first and second inthe M65. Once more Sharon Gibbinswas the lone female competitor.A bit more action in the discus andthe javelin with a combined total of 42competitors taking part.In the discus the best throw in themen’s division came from M50 BobBanens just ahead of M60 Attila Spaits.Other age group winners were M30John Donovan, M40 Craig Wisdom witha PB of 27.28, M45 Steve Wallace, M55Phil Toomey, M65 Colin Robbie, M70Rad Leovic and M75 Ewen Drummond. For the women Jayne Hardy’s 36.38 wasway ahead of the rest in winning theW40s. Other age group winners wereW50 Margaret Taylor, W55 TrishThomas and W60 Jan Davies. In the javelin Bob Banens and JayneHardy got in top throws to take out theM50s and W40s respectively. Runners are awarded pointsfrom 1 to 50 according to where theywere placed in each race. Also in eachrace the placegetters and all that finishin the top 50% are re-handicappedallocates them to more difficult groups. This season’s winner was RogerStewart, however it was extremely tightand it was only after the final race thatthe winner was finally confirmed andRoger took the top prize by a matter of acouple of points from Maureen Rossiterwith Graham Burke third. There is an old-age saying that “thewinners are grinners”, the losers willhave to try again next season. Thatoften comes to the fore in some of theawards in particular the Throwers, theBoag and the Daniels events.THE THROWERS TROPHYOnce again Ray Green and JayneHardy dominated the Throwers TrackSeries, indeed they have won everymen’s and women’s trophies every yearsince it started five years ago. The waythe winners of the Throwers Trophy isworked out is by a percentage of all thefive discipline’s results against theWorld Masters Athletic (WMA) agegroup best performances, thatpercentage is then averaged out over theseason. So the congratulations go to Rayand Jayne for their efforts, andespecially to Jayne for her tremendousseason, after she moved up to the W40sand broke record after record.THE DANIELS SPRINT SERIESThe Daniels Sprint Series is yetanother of our popular handicap racesthat give athletes of all abilities thechance to get the top of the pointscoretable. Each athlete is given a handicapAward winners: From the left: Roger Stewart Adler winner with Graham Burke third. Ray Green took out the Throwers Trophy.

Page 10—May Vetrunnerof metres according to how fast they canrun over the set distances of 100 and200m, i.e. the slowest runner in the100m is given say a 40m start and thequickest may be given only a couple ofmetres. The best times of both the men’sand women’s race are given points foreach event from 20 downwards to theslowest runner. This year it was verytight at the top of the results table andalthough we usually rely on computersto give a fair and correct result, thisseason it had to be done manually. Thewinners of the Daniels Sprint Awardsthis year were Kevin Matthews for themen, and Jennifer Krevatin for thewomen.THE BOAG AWARDSThe Boag Awards are another eventthat is worked out by percentage.Competitors have to compete inspecified events from a short sprint tothe 400m and the short hurdles over 80,100 and 110m as well as the longerhurdles over 300 and 400m. Eachathlete is given a percentage that iscalculated from their performanceagainst WMA age group records, thatpercentage is then averaged over alltheir races and the winner of the men’sBoag Awards this year was GarryMaher with the women’s trophy going toMargaret Taylor. It should be noted thatalthough not at the top in thepercentage tables, both Garry andMargaret were the only runners thathad taken part in the hurdles.THE PENNINGTON SERIESThe Pennington Middle Distanceraces were over 800 and 1500m. Thisevent, although a handicap, has agebased starts once again according toWMA rankings. The older womenstarting first followed by the older menand then going right down through allthe five-year age groups with the M30ssometimes giving the front runnersmore than a minute start in a 1500mrace. These races are very exciting towatch as it is usually comes down tothat final lap, indeed the final 50 to100m of the race, when the fittestrunners in a particular age groupgetting to the front. This year tworunners finished on equal points and itused to be, in the case of a tie, that theolder competitor took out the award. However, in the Pennington, in theevent of a tie, the calculations are a bitdifferent. In this race, in the event of atie, the winner is calculated by how fareach runner is into his or her particularfive-year age group. In this case bothKevin Chamberlain and Colin FowlerThe Daniels Sprint Handicap. Kevin Matthews left took out the men’s award andJennifer Krevatin the women’s award.were three years into their respectiveage groups, then it went down tomonths and if necessary days. However,Kevin is three years and three monthsinto his age group of M55 and Colin isthree years and one month into theM40s. This made Kevin the winner andColin the runner up, both collectingtrophies.THE AUDUN FRISTAD AWARDSThese awards go to the athletes thathave performed up to the level of elite intheir own particular age group and alsofor their own particular types of events. These awards are not done on a pointsor percentage system but on theobservations of Bryan Thomas’ AwardsSub-Committee. I have been on thiscommittee many times over the yearsand normally there are always at least acouple of standout athletes in the men’sand women’s competition in theirchosen discipline. Sometimes chosingthe winners of these awards is veryclose with many athletes in with achance, although when an athletebreaks an Australia-record that recordis observed as higher than an ACTrecord. There are awards for first, second and third in both the men andwomen’s competition. For the men, the Gold Medal went toRobert Barbaro, arguably the Club’sbest age-graded sprinter. He has brokenACT records over 60, 200, and 400m aswell as being a member of the team thatbroke the M50 4x200m. He also won forthe fourth time the Gift, an age-gradedsprint that is held on the Thursdaybefore the Christmas break. The Silver Medal for the 2002-2003track season went to KevinChamberlain. Kevin is a consistentmiddle distance performer, breaking themile record. He won the Higgins 800mage-graded handicap in December, alsotaking out the Pennington Series thisseason for the second time. He alsocompetes in relays and the longerhurdle events. Like Robert he oftencompetes with athletes many years hisjunior. He has also won the Gold MedalAward in this category twice. The Bronze Medal went to BobBanens. He is an athlete that isconsidered as an all-rounder, competingin sprints as well as jumps, multi-eventsand throwing, although he has at timeshad to take care of his “undercarriage”,and only takes part in the five throwingdisciplines. His expertise in javelinthrow is world class and he performs atthe national level in the other fourthrowing events. In the past FristadAwards Bob has taken out the GoldMedal three times, the Silver once andthe Bronze twice. In the women’s competition theoutstanding performance of JayneHardy resulted in several Australianrecords, especially since moving up theto W40 age group. Indeed, it was in thepenultimate track and field meet onMarch 20 that Jayne broke the heavyweight record three times in oneevening. Jayne has already taken outthe Gold Medal in this category as wellas two Silver and Bronze Medals. Thisseason alone Jayne has taken out a totalof 15 Australian or ACT records. Thisyear she won the Throwers Award forthe fifth consecutive year; indeed Jayneand Ray Green have taken out everyaward since its inception.Fran Harris took out the SilverMedal and is one of the club’s more

consistent performers. She has alreadyscored the silver medal in the FristadAwards, and this one makes it two. Sheis world class in the 300m hurdles andin the 2000m Steeplechase. Fran has setseven records, ACT and Australian, thisseason, and without doubt is one of theoutstanding female all rounder for theyear. The Bronze Medal in the FristadAwards this year went to MaureenRossiter, who by any standards has hada magnificent second half of the trackseason. She has consistently betteredher own ACT marks over 400 and 800mseveral times. In the final two weeks ofFebruary and the first two of MarchMaureen had a run of four records in asmany weeks. She has won the “Gift” forthe second year and was the firstwomen home in the Higgins MemorialHandicap.HEART FOUNDATION AWARDThis year’s winner, Trish Thomas, isa very long time member of theACTVAC, having joined in 1984 andbeen honoured with Life Membership in2001.Many have expressed the view thatshe would have been a worthy recipientof this award some years ago. However, throughout this season severalindividuals approached our AwardsSub-committee suggesting that as Trishhas been (and continues to be) awonderful role model for othersconsidering a return to activeparticipation following a lay-off causedby either injury or illness that the timewas right for her to be this year’swinner of the prestigious NationalHeart Foundation Trophy. In seasons past, Trish was an eliteperformer in the throwing events;having set several ACT Records, wonnumerous medals at nationalchampionships, won a gold medal andtwo silver medals at worldchampionships, set a World Record forthe W40 hammer and won the FristadAward for athletics excellence in 1990.Trish has undergone eightoperations over the past 9 years. Theseops include surgery to the face, shoulder, chest, legs and feet; the latestbeing a tendon transfer and realignmentof the right foot in June 2000, a bilateralmastectomy for breast cancer in August2001 and then the left foot realignmentin April last year. She has made a determinedcomeback to athletics competition viafrequent intensive workouts in the gym,a weekly session of deepwater exerciseand has recently commenced a tentativewomen’s.return to specific throwing eventtraining. As in the previous 18 summers,Trish was a regular participantthroughout the current track and fieldseason, competing in all three throwingevents held each evening as well as anoccasional race walk and spiralhandicap race. Trish readily volunteersto help as an official at her event andeven found time to organise a group ofmore senior veteran women throwers topractise relay baton changes inanticipation of entering a relay team atthe nationals in Perth. In past seasons Trish has playedsignificant roles in helping to organiseand conduct major events, activelypromote members’ participation innational and world championships aswell as being very involved in designingand producing club uniforms.Congratulations to Trish Thomas onbeing our 21st recipient of the NationalHeart Foundation Trophy.JOHNSTON TROPHY AWARDSThis year’s recipients, Mike Adler,Doug Fry, Jim O’Donnell and JohnSuiter (our “Magnificent Foursome”)have been vital to the success of ourtrack and field program for manyseasons and are worthy and popularrecipients of this prestigious club-persontrophy.They are always some of the earliestto arrive and last to leave each trackand field night. They often arrive evenbefore the Meet Director and go aboutefficiently unpacking the kit and settingup ready for the evening’s program. Notask is too difficult or too mundane forthis knowledgeable and conscientiousteam.May Vetrunner — Page 11The Boag Awards. Garry Maher, left got the men’s award and Margaret Taylor theThe Pennington Series. Colin Farlow, although equal on points with the winnerof the middle distance handicap KevinChamberlain, took second place on anage group count back using the oldereach athlete is in their particular agegroup. This year’s win is unique. We havenever had an M284 win the JohnsonTrophy before, but on 5 previousoccasions it has been presented to ateam and so it is once again, but neverbefore to a foursome! This year’s winners are an excellentteam, at times seemingly running thewhole program themselves. But theyalso contribute so much as individuals. For example Mike Adler (M77) startsall our races but is also involved inmeasuring and marking the differenthandicap start positions on the track.Mike previously won the JohnsonTrophy in 1996.Doug Fry (M64) is chief recorder who

Page 12—May Vetrunnerknows almost every athlete by nameand the club identification number ofmany. He also maintains our electronictiming equipment including the bigclock. Then at the end of each night’scompetition he goes home and processesresults. Doug also won the JohnsonTrophy in 1995 and 1999.Jim O’Donnell (M69) is a timer and/or recorder as well as photographer. Healso processes results and writes reportsfor both Vetrunner and the CanberraTimes. This season Jim has been able tojoin in the walks and some of the spiralhandicaps. Jim also won the JohnsonTrophy in 1991 and 1994.John Suiter (M74) works mainly aschief timekeeper and sometimes asrecorder. But he also sets up andoperates the drink station for longertrack events, sets up the tea and coffeesupper facilities and as he is always lastto leave he often goes around collectinglost property. John participates in allspiral handicaps and some of the longerraces. John also won the JohnsonTrophy in 1990 and 1995.Although each of this “MagnificentFoursome” has won the Johnson Trophypreviously it is time that we againacknowledge and recognise their valuedcontribution to the continued success ofour summer track and field program.Congratulations to Mike Adler, DougFry, Jim O’Donnell and John Suiter asjoint recipients of the 21st JohnsonTrophy.Note: The task of identifying therecipients and preparing citations forthese two awards was performed bymembers of the Awards Sub-Committeethat were regular attendees throughoutthe track and field season, (BryanThomas (chair), Cory Collins, WillFoster, Maureen Rossiter and MargaretTaylor). Our other tasks are to determinerecipients of Life Membership, theEncouragement Award (monthlyrunning handicaps) and the ClohessyTrophy (monthly throwing handicaps).Other members of the Awards Sub-Committee are John Alcock and Stuart JReid. We appreciate suggestions from membersof persons they believe worthy ofconsideration for these prestigious “ClubPerson” Awards. Each week during the track andfield season the results arecollated and fed into our database system SHERPA by BOBBANENS for the field results withsome assistance from RAYLEARUDOV, the track results byDOUG FRY with some assistancefrom JIM O’DONNELL. Theseresults are then formatted forboth the Canberra Times and theVetrunner by either JIMO’DONNELL or DOUG FRY. Thereports are written by JIMO’DONNELLA NOTABLE TWO DAYS FOR THE THROWING HANDICAPPERThis March Monthly ThrowingHandicap had five recipients of ourmajor Track and Field Awards backedup two days later to perform well in thismonth’s throwing handicap; they were -Bob Banens (third male Fristad Award),Ray Green (male Throwers’ Trophy),Jayne Hardy (female winner of FristadAward), Kevin Matthews (male DanielsSeries) and Trish Thomas (NationalHeart Foundation Trophy). Trish endedthe afternoon with the gold medal as thewinner of the handicap competition, Bobwon the bronze and Kevin made asuccessful debut in the hammer throwwhile both Ray and Jayne threw welldespite being seriously restricted byinjuries. Then as if emphasize thatveteran athletes certainly enjoy regular(and varied) competition Kevin andTrish turned out for the monthlyrunning handicap the followingmorning. It was wonderful to welcome backJean Heath from her 14 months sojournto Cambodia as a voluntary aid worker.Glad to have you back Jean!We were also pleased to welcomeJane Kuypers to her first monthlythrowing handicap. However, as Jane isan enthusiastic and regular gymdevotee she performed well in her firstever attempts at throwing the hammerand javelin. Hope you enjoyed theexperience Jane and that you become aregular participant in this popular andunique competition.MARCH THROWING HANDICAP IN HAMMER and JAVELINName Age Jhcp Jav Tot Pl Hhcp Ham Tot Pl Total Pl PtsThomas,Trish W55 35.41 17.28 52.69 10 26.60 29.72 56.32 1 109.01 1 50Blewitt,Kevin M60 19.69 33.41 53.10 7 24.71 30.60 55.31 2 108.41 2 49Banens,Bob M50 6.74 45.83 52.57 13 12.26 42.06 54.32 3 106.89 3 48Whyte,Robin M60 28.58 25.38 53.96 1 34.49 18.34 52.83 6 106.79 4 47Gibbins,Sharon W40 30.88 22.55 53.43 5 11.40 41.66 53.06 4 106.49 5 46De Chazal,Nola W60 42.86 10.54 53.40 6 36.36 16.44 52.80 7 106.20 6 45Freeman,Peter M55 25.34 28.15 53.49 4 32.52 19.78 52.30 9 105.79 7 44Robbie,Colin M65 24.38 29.32 53.70 2 28.90 23.07 51.97 12 105.67 8 43Chesterton,Val W60 40.78 12.26 53.04 8 39.53 13.02 52.55 8 105.59 9 42Taylor,Margaret W50 37.20 15.14 52.34 14 30.30 22.66 52.96 5 105.30 10 41Mitchell,Irene W60 40.46 12.36 52.82 9 21.38 30.34 51.72 13 104.54 11 40Davies,Jan W60 31.65 20.68 52.33 15 11.22 40.21 51.43 15 103.76 12 39Burns,John M70 40.03 11.65 51.68 19 31.15 20.90 52.05 10 103.73 13 38Toomey,Phil M50 27.31 24.36 51.67 20 29.44 22.58 52.02 11 103.69 14 37Bourke,Jen W60 28.47 25.18 53.65 3 23.37 26.63 50.00 22 103.65 15 36Fristad,Audun M80 36.49 16.10 52.59 12 34.54 16.44 50.98 16 103.57 16 35Blackaby,N’elle W35 45.77 6.40 52.17 16 34.84 15.94 50.78 19 102.95 17 34Perry,Claire W30 42.59 8.94 51.53 22 38.14 12.79 50.93 18 102.46 18 33O'brien,Wendy W50 44.76 6.45 51.21 23 35.39 15.55 50.94 17 102.15 19 32Thomas,Bryan M60 22.99 28.63 51.62 21 30.41 19.68 50.09 21 101.71 20 31Drummond,E M75 32.26 17.66 49.92 26 26.32 25.26 51.58 14 101.50 21 30Neill,Peter M65 31.59 21.02 52.61 11 24.89 23.90 48.79 26 101.40 22 29Nugent,Frank M40 34.25 17.88 52.13 17 30.29 18.63 48.92 25 101.05 23 28Leovic,Rad M70 31.59 18.87 50.46 25 33.79 16.10 49.89 23 100.35 24 27Green, Ray M55 14.88 35.65 50.53 24 13.05 36.14 49.19 24 99.72 25 26Hardy,Jayne W40 15.86 32.92 48.78 27 7.45 43.04 50.49 20 99.27 26 25Colyer,Tania W40 43.84 7.94 51.78 18 35.31 11.49 46.80 27 98.58 27 24Rudov,Raylea W55 33.23 11.06 44.29 28 20.22 15.55 35.77 28 80.06 28 23Mathews,Kevin M40 32.50 16.23 N/EMathews,Vicki W40 19.90 13.66 N/EKuypers,Jane W40 11.94 13.92 N/EHeath,Jean W60 11.28 13.13 N/EMencik,George M70 39.77 N/ERaylea Rudov limited herself tohaving just one gentle fling of thejavelin and one gentle turn with thehammer as she has been diagnosed ashaving suffered a cruciate ligamenttear. Trish’s previous trophies were inNovember 1990, October 1993, Marchand September 1995 and March andApril 2001. Note that three of her winswere in March.Veteran athletes certainly enjoyregular (and varied) competition! After two months of the 2003monthly throwing handicap season TrishThomas is currently leading theprogressive point score with 95 points, just ahead of Kevin Blewitt 95 and ColinRobbie 93. Making up the top ten are –Sharon Gibbins 82 points, Jan Daviesand Margaret Taylor are tied on 81, thenthere is a group of three Audun Fristad,Jen Bourke and John Burns with 79 andPeter Freeman is 10th on 77 points. The lucky draw for the 128th bottleof port (kindly donated by Joe ofWanniassa IGA Supermarket, was wonby Frank Nugent. Unfortunately thiswill be the last bottle donated by Joe forhe has retired and sold the WanniassaIGA Supermarket. For almost 13 years Joe has kindlysupported the monthly throwinghandicap program by donating a qualityboxed bottle of port every month. On behalf of all who haveparticipated in the handicaps a BIGTHANK YOU to JOE.The second bottle of Margaret Riverred, donated by Bjarne of SouthsidePhysiotherapy and Sports Injury Centrein Tuggeranong, was won by WendyFreeman.Phil Toomey was presented with his“50 monthly handicaps” T-shirt,becoming the 27th member to haveachieved this honour. Then before they got anyfurther, and just into the area of thestadium carpark they were turned backby a marshal after barely going 1500mon the course that was supposed to be4km long. This changed the race toaround 3km long and therefore therewas a need for alterations to the timesthat were in between the startinggroups. This is why the medal winnerscould not be appointed on the day.Now for the record in future eventsthat are held on this course. Thewalkers start on the recreation path asthey normally do. Carry on down thatrecreation path past the CanberraStadium until there is a big left-handerthat indicates that this is the way toKaleen. It’s quite a sharp turn and it isthe only turn on this particularrecreation path. The walkers then makea right-hand turn, still staying on therecreation path that runs behind theAIS, keep going all the way down pastthe soccer fields until reaching the roadthat comes off Ginninderra Driveleading to the AIS. Don’t cross the roadas this is the correct turn around pointfor the normal 4km race. The walkersthen go back the way they came, turnleft after the stadium, you will have toas this is the only way the path goes. Then after about 50m it joins the mainrecreation path that comes up fromO’Connor and goes right up the hill pastthe AIS Athletic Field and behind theBruce Campus of the Technical Collegewhere the start finish area is located. At the stage of writing this reportthe medal winners of the Thomas andFrylink Series’ are listed on theSHERPA website as gold, silver andbronze but on the Waddell Series thereare the full results with the pointscoresindicated but no medals winners arelisted. More on that as it comes tohand. This was my first outing over theO’Connor Ridge short course and I hadbeen told that it is a course devoid ofany flat stretches. It is either up ordown, no matter which direction one isgoing. On the outward journey one doesnot tend to notice that the first 700m orso is easy, but surely can’t escape fromthe up hill sections. There is anotherdown hill stretch where the marshal onthat point indicated that it is easy forthe next 500m but just remember thatyou have to come back up the same wayon the journey back. The hardest hillsare on the next section that is decidedlyup, in fact right up to the halfway pointfor Frylink runners and about 6km forthe Thomas runners. Then both serieshave to make their way back to the startfinish area with two tough climbs tonegotiate before getting there. For myself I have been doing a bit ofuphill work leading up to the runs atO’Connor Ridge but I’m not quite surewhat went wrong as I had a shocker of arun and seem not to be able to get mylegs to react to what my brain wastelling them to do. Subsequently I hadmany walks on both the outward andinward journeys and it was sheerdetermination that kept me going. I feltso that I must conquer that fourkilometers and I was so determined todo so that I went back there thefollowing Wednesday before I left for thenorth coast of NSW for a ten day break.Yes, certainly I did it much betterknocking about six minutes off mySunday time, but it was still terriblyslow. Never mind I will use Plan B thenext time and take my mountain bikealong. It wasn’t until at the Tuesday groupthat I heard about Juani O’Reilly, theolder one, having a bad turn before shegot to the halfway point in the ThomasSeries and struggled with the help ofher daughter to make it back up thestart. This is again a reminder that allrunners and even walkers should in theevent of feeling unwell in the firstinstance stop and even sit down and get

someone to get a message back to thestart and arrangements can then bemade to have you picked up where they, the officials, seek medical attention if itis required. Anyway the good news thatJuani is OK and wisely she didn’t runwith the Tuesday group but had apleasant walk with Al Mallory. Shewent to her doctor the day after thehandicap and now is having tests to seewhat made her feel so bad. More on thatlatter as it comes to hand. Now for the races at O’Connor Ridgestarting with the longer run over 8km.THE THOMAS SERIESStarting in the forest area oppositeto the Bruce TAFE, runners made theirway down towards O’Connor atDryandra Street, keeping on the forestpaths till the reached the turn aroundpoints when they had to make their wayback up the hill to join the runners inthe shorter race where they made a bigright-hand turn, going up a short butsharp uphill climb of about 100m. Therethey were directed by that marshal, mentioned above, who let most of usknow that there was a lovely down hillsection but the bad part that you had tocome back up that hill later. From thebottom of that downhill stretch it wasup hill all the way to where a fairlyhappy marshal, probably because hewasn’t in the race, asked runners toturn around and make their way backthe way they came and join the mainpath that led runners up to the start/finish line. This story is just to indicate that it issometimes wise to hang around afterthe races, even though you have onlycrossed the line in sixth spot, and beable to claim your medal and get theaccolades of your fellow handicaprunners, even have the chance to getyour picture taken for the next editionof Vetrunner.First home in the 8km event wasBrian Austin. Brian is no stranger toour handicap races and this time aroundhe wasn’t eligible for medals or points, his time will come again, though comingfirst will maybe make his task a lotharder as he will no doubt will havecaught the eye of the handicapper.Brian’s best in past handicap was abronze medal, but it has been someyears since that medal winning effort.Next home was Kerry O’Neill, daughter of the club’s well-known jokerand story teller Greg. Kerry has beenwith the Flying Doctor service for thepast couple of years, though on tripshome she has managed to get in someruns with the vets. Like Brian, Kerryhas only had one medal a bronze in theThomas Series.Third over the line was MariaHancock. Don’t know much aboutMaria, but we have a Tony Hancock onour medal winners list. The same would apply to EricCochrane, Simon Duke and Don Smithwho are not previously listed on theclub’s handicap runners. Eric wasfourth, Simon fifth and Don sixth. Now we come to Jon Donovan. Therun here at O’Connor Ridge was specialfor Jon as it would seem that this washis first eligible run and a gold medal toboot. Jon was sent on his way withgroup 19 with the clock ticking over at16 minutes. His net time for the 8kmwas 40.22 that made his km rating arespectable 5.03. He also got the 150points that were on offer. Next homewas Linda Ryan again a runner notlisted on the handicap list of medalwinners.Peter James is well knownthroughout the running community andis up there with the best of them andwas in the third last handicap group tostart at O’Connor Ridge at 41 with onlyRod Lynch 42, Mick Corlis behind himat 44 and Steve Bradford in group 45.Peter’s net for the distance was apretty smart 29.46, which, was by farthe best net for the 130 runners, overhalf a minute ahead of Steve, almostMay Vetrunner — Page 15The Thomas medal winners. Jon Donovan, centre, wins his first handicap event.Peter James, left, got the silver and the bronze medal went to Ruth Baussmann.three ahead of Rod and a ‘mile’ ahead ofMick who has been recuperating fromhis last marathon. Peter’s km ratingwas 3.43 really an excellent run overthis very demanding course. It was hisfirst medal in the handicap races, although I do remember he got hishands on one before but because of anadministration error was only able tohold it briefly, about 30 seconds as Irecall. The bronze medal this month wentto Ruth Baussmann and it was a prettygood run for her as this is considered asa back markers course and here Ruthgot up from group 16 with the clockticking past the 14 minutes mark.Ruth’s net time for the 8km was 43.06that turned out to be 5.23 per kilometer.Ruth has had three previous visits tothe medal podium with a gold and twosilvers. With, as said above, Peter James thequickest of the men, he was followed by,as also mentioned above, Rod Lynch32.15 and Kent Williams 32.20. For thewomen Carol Ey took the honours with37.12 from Cathy Newman andElizabeth Thompson 38.33, newcomerJacquline Shrimpton finishing with a38.56.Will Foster leads the pointscoretable after three runs with 411 thencomes Steve Bradford 402 and KentWilliams 379.

BobChapman was the third quickest of themen with a 19.51. Carol Baird was thesecond quickest of the women with a20.39 and third Kathleen Bleakley 21.31just edging out Maureen Rossiter’s21.45.Tony Brown was the second runnerhome in the overall stakes, however, heMay Vetrunner — Page 17The Frylink medal winners. Page 18— May Vetrunnerwas not eligible for a medal or pointsthis time around. The gold medallist, Frank Nugent, was third home registering a net 24.06for the 4km, from his handicap group of18. Frank’s km rating was 6.01. Beforehis run at O’Connor Ridge Frank hadmade five visits to the medal podiumwith a gold in the Thomas Series, threemore gold medals in the Frylink as wellas a silver, also in the Frylink Series.Frank was pretty pleased with his visitto Bruce as was his daughter, Heather, who took a fancy to her dad’s medal andI’m sure she would have it around herneck before they got home. The next two across the line, JanetBurstall and Bill Egan were among thenon-eligible runners, although both havebeen in many handicap races before, buthaven’t been running them lately. Janetran a 25.27 and Bill a 24.08.The silver medal went to BobChapman with a pretty good net of 19.51for the distance. He got his challengeunderway on group 33 with the clock at10mins 40sec. His km rating was 4.58.This was Bob’s fourth medal, with two inthe Thomas both silver and one in theFrylink a gold. Although Bob is betterknown as a race walker he still runs inraces, but has trouble with his kneeswhich restricts his training for thelonger distances. On the other hand Megan Haycock isone of the new younger brigade that hascome into vets, has never won a medal inany of the handicap races and by thegrin on her face she was pretty pleasedwith herself. May Vetrunner — Page 23A VERY SPECIAL DAY FOR THE FIRST CLUB PRESIDENTBRYAN THOMAS writes about hisjourney to Umina on the NSWCentral Coast to joint in thecelebrations for PETER FRYLINKS70th birthday.Currently 28 members haveachieved the special age of “three scoreand ten”, in fact three of them are over80 years of age and most are activeparticipants.Six members celebrate very specialbirthdays during the year; JuaniO’Reilly became a W75 in February,George Mencik an M70 a few weekslater, Peter Frylink joined the M70s inMarch, Ewen Drummond will be anM80 in May while Jim O’Donnell turns70 and Anton Tesija 90 in October. All of these people have beenprominent within our club for manyyears. Brief items on the athleticscareers of Juani and George appeared inthe last edition of Vetrunner, Peter’sstory is published below, Ewen is anoutstanding athlete who is a regularparticipant in our track and field andmonthly throwing handicap programs,Jim of course is everywhere and thelong time editor of the best clubathletics magazine in the nation whileAnton just keeps on coaching andthrowing the hammer in his Croatianhomeland.Recently Trish and I traveled up toUmina on the Central Coast to helpPeter Frylink, our inaugural presidentand a Life Member, celebrate his 70thbirthday. I had been asked to give ashort speech about Peter’s involvementwith the Vets. Here is what I said -PETER FRYLINK – “FITNESSTHROUGH FELLOWSHIP”“Fitness through Fellowship” is themotto of the ACT Veterans’ AthleticsClub and if Peter didn’t actually comeup with the phrase he certainly played akey role in its adoption. Peter firstreferred to it in his editorial in thesecond edition of the club’s newsletter inOctober 1979. The motto is also a prettyfair description of his personal outlookon life and physical activity. AlthoughPeter has been a member of our clubsince its beginning he was neverrenowned for being an elite athlete, infact he was your average weekendjogger who liked to go for a long runwithout actually working up too much ofa sweat.I have known Peter for more than 23years as a sporting colleague and friend.I knew his first wife Willie, I haveenjoyed meals and parties at his formerhome in Canberra, perhaps the mostmemorable being a New Years Eveparty that had as its highlight a noisymidnight pack run through the streetsof Chapman. I was invited to be one ofthe witnesses when he remarried and Ihelped celebrate both his 50th and 60thbirthdays.Now I have the honour to tell you alittle about Peter the veteran athlete.Peter is one of the “Originals” of theACTVAC in that he was there at thevery birth of the club in May 1979. Peterbecame our first President, a position heheld for the first six importantformative years (1979 to 1985). Duringthat time I watched him in actionspreading the good word about this newand exciting concept of serious sport formature aged people. Peter was anexcellent role model for the time as heencouraged apprehensive newcomers to“have a go”, or join him in a gentle jogand told them that there was no need toget hung up with trying to do PBs; butmost of all he encouraged them to relishbeing fit and active and to enjoy thespecial ambience of veterans’ athletics.Although he appreciated andencouraged high standards of athleticperformance he came to the conclusionthat our club was better off stayingoutside mainstream athletics (AA).Apart from being president heperformed many other tasks; some ofthe most significant being editor (1979 –1981) and co-editor (1985 – 1986) of ourpopular monthly magazine “Vetrunner”and for many years he was alsoresponsible for printing “Vetrunner” ona cantankerous old spirit duplicator inhis garage (a messy and frustrating joboften helped along by a flagon of cheapwhite wine). He was also our annualFun Run Organiser in the early yearsand leader of the team that organisedthe 1984 Oceania and AustralianVeterans’ Athletics Championships. Thetask of organizing these championshipswas particularly stressful; we were asmall, inexperienced fledging club, wewere finding it difficult to obtainsponsorship and our leader’s wife Williewas battling breast cancer at the time.In November 1985 his contributionto the development of the ACTVAC wererecognized by being awarded LifeMembership. As a competitive runner Peter wasmore your social jogger. More often thannot he would plod along at the back ofthe field happily enjoying the fun run,cross-country or track race he happenedto be competing in, and if by chance hehappened to run alongside someone ofhis own gentle pace, (usually older menor women) he would engage them infriendly chatter. In such fashion he wasa regular participant in distance racesthroughout Canberra and further afield, including several national Track andField Championships and even to anOceania Championships in Samoa so itis not too surprising that he rarely camehome with a medal or trophy. However,he must have hoodwinked theHandicapper because he did win ourvery first monthly running handicap inJuly 1979 and then in 1982 he surprisedhis friends by returning from theAustralian Veterans’ AthleticsChampionships in Perth with a silvermedal for the M45 shot put. Perhaps ifhe had his time over Peter may havefound his tall frame more suited tothrowing than long distance running.Peter’s enjoyment and promotion ofgentle social jogging as the mostdesirable form of running wasrecognized when the club named theshort course event in our monthlyrunning handicap program, the FrylinkSeries.Even during the height of the“running boom”, when it appeared thateveryone wanted to run a marathonPeter maintained his philosophy ofgentle jogging. At his going away partyprior to moving north to Umina, Peterpresented certificates to the few runnersin attendance that were qualified to joinhis “Non Marathoners Club”.During the “boom”, Deek Drive inStromlo Forest became the Mecca for allenthusiastic long distance runners tostart and finish long training runs. Itsoon became obvious that there wasneed for a tap and toilet facilities. Peterwon the contract to build a “state-of-theart-eco-friendly’toilet block. During itsconstruction it came to be affectionatelyknown as “Peter’s Palace” but whenDeek (Robert de Castella) officiallyopened it in 1987 and had the honour ofthe first pee it became “Deek’s Dunny”.Unfortunately, some years later Deek’sDunny or Peter’s Palace was burned byvandals and never rebuilt.Although Peter has lived on theCentral Coast for several years hemaintains a strong interest in our clubactivities and still has many friends inCanberra and I know that he stillbelieves and lives by the motto “Fitnessthrough Fellowship”.

Page 24— May VetrunnerI received a note with my pay slipasking if anyone would be interested inparticipating in a 24 hour Relay for Lifein aid of cancer. As my company wouldbe mainly walking I thought oforganising a Vets team of runners.Asking people at Vets track and fieldthe response was very pleasing with atleast 10 people showing real interest. With only three weeks to the run I madecontact with the ACT Cancer Council fordetails of the event. Thanks for a great seasonTo the EditorI am writing to thank the AthleticsEvents Sub-Committee for organisingsuch a great track and field season. As someone who just turns up fairlyregularly to participate and does heronce only official duty I was impressedwith the program and the way thingsseem to happen without fuss and in avery relaxed manner.I am very aware that this does notoccur without lots of effort by manypeople, not only those rostered on.Besides the ‘big- four’ who were justlyawarded the Johnson Trophy, Iobserved that there were many regularhelpers every Thursday night who justdo what has to be done and areavailable to help as required before orafter their own event. This year the weather was good, hotuntil the sun went down and then quitebalmy with beautiful clear skies. It’sgreat to have a run in those conditions. The program was comprehensive, particularly convenient having distanceevents at the beginning and end of eachnight. To all those Monthly Handicaprunners and walkers, if you happen toread this, think about coming out to thetrack next season in October and doinga 3km, 5km, a spiral handicap run or awalk – I guarantee you’ll go home on ahigh. For some of us, a few more slowerrunners would be particularly welcome.I’m sure those who do the walks, thethrows and the jumps would alsowelcome more participants!Thank you again to Neil Boden andhis team.Cory Collins, Campbell.Where is our club going? To the Editor,I don’t normally get involved inpublic comment (it’s not my nature) butI felt it was time someone did. Therewere several times over the past 18months where I wanted somebody to saysomething but nobody did so finally Iam.I’m not trying to push anybody’sparticular point of view (includingmine), name names or anything likethat; all I want to achieve is to getmembers to think about what the clubmeans to them and where they think itshould be going.I remember thinking when I joinedthe club nearly four years ago what aprogressive and alive club it was. Therewas lots of enthusiasm, active memberLETTERS TO THEEDITORparticipation and generally the club wasvery active and demonstrated a clearvision to move forward.I was particularly impressed withthe club’s grasping of new technology toenhance the members’ experience andresults feedback (eg a really goodwebsite featuring results, course info, notices etc). This was all backed up by severalmembers who it seemed to me “lived forthe club” judging by the number ofhours they put in to ensure the smoothrunning of the club and itsinfrastructure.I don’t know if it’s just me but latelythings seem to be going around in everdecreasing circles, displaying a generallack of vision and purpose. There alsohas been significant membershipturnover and running participationseems to be declining. This is especially true amongst thebackmarkers where the ranks aregetting really thin and its quite boringrunning for ages before you see anybodyelse. I personally would like to see someeffort made to attract a few of the goodrunners back, OK so this may mean abit more of a competitive side to the clubbut its got nothing to do with elitism. Tome this would enhance my socialexperience of the club, which should beoffering both competitive, and socialdimensions so that members can choosehow much of each they are interested in.I think that things started to gowrong after all that unpleasantness atthe AGM two years ago where somemembers set out to air their ownpersonal agendas under the “guise” offree speech. The right to free speech only extendsThe Star newspaper in South Africareports of the new M55 world record in the800, which age-grades to an open equivalentof 1:41.73, an awesome performance:Stan Immelman from Central GautengMasters Athletics, competing in the EPMasters Championships in December inPort Elizabeth, bettered the men's 55-59world record in the 800 with a time of2:03.70.The existing record, currently held byTom Roberts of Australia, stands at 2:05.07and was set back in 1989.Immelman set a cracking pace with afirst lap in 58 seconds, maintaining a steadyMay Vetrunner — Page 25only up to the point where it infringeson others’ rights, after that its termedlibel and slander. What happened wasclearly in the latter category andbecause nothing was done about it bythe executive it set a general badprecedent where the club is still beingused by some members to push theirown agendas and vendettas. Honestly, sometimes I feel like shouting out “getreal you bunch of old phogies”.The fallout from this was severe onthe club’s functioning, several memberswere so badly offended that they leftand never came back while otherssimply stepped into the background andstopped contributing the enormouseffort they had been putting in.I could just do what several otherrunners have done and vanish, lets faceit you can collect a few mates and go fora run anywhere, anytime; you don’tneed a club to do it but that’s not what Iwant. I joined so that I could interactwith people who had a zest for life andbetter things to do than sitting aroundwith a beer watching the footy. So all I’m asking is for members tothink seriously about what the clubmeans to them, what they think itshould offer and what they themselvescan do for it and other members. Wehave a diverse range of members, fromthose who mainly want just the socialaspects of the club through to those whowant to be individually competitive. Most members sit between theseextremes but the club needs to offersomething for everybody to besuccessful. So think about whatever issues arerelevant to you and make yourselfheard, with the AGM coming up soonwhat better time or make yourself heardsome other way. (Don’t worry, this isn’ta pitch for me running for office, I’m aback row cynic and it’d ruin my style)Steve Bradford, Deakin.WORLD RECORD IN SOUTH AFRICApace throughout and running virtually onhis own.At the WMC held in Brisbane, inAugust, 2001, Immelman (then a M50) ran aPB of 2:02.56, finishing third in the final. He has his sights set on a sub twominute800m this season, which ends withthe South African Masters Championshipsin Bellville in May next year.Stan has been awarded the Male Athleteof the Year for his world record in the M55800m and being the highest age-gradedpercentage of 98.4%.Story from Ken Stone, Runner's WorldOnline at. http://www.masterstrack.com
