The panorama from theirapartment — on a fine day you can even see Jardine’sLookout — inspires some guests to say jokingly: “What apentastic view!”Speaking of guests, the list this year included:• Big Pat Craig (born in County Tyrone) escorting PiaChay, who recently announced her engagement to themulti-millionaire Archibald Grey Songster.• Deb Benedict: she’s Archie’s niece, and she brought alongher partner, the effusive ‘Hugs’ Dancer.• Roma Kybe, diva of renown in the 60’s, lookingresplendent in her yellow and red outfit from the FawazFashion House.• Mr Prudent, who by completing only two years training ata seminary had failed to attain Holy Orders. He wasaccompanied by DJ Bardolphin (‘Bardy’) who works outdaily at his gym.• Zaza Galia, whose distinctly secret means of employmentcaused the gossipy tongue of Jemma Mooloomooloo tomove at frightening speed.Well, the guests had a ball: the food was ample and ofexquisite taste; music by the Yakama Quintet providedpleasantries to the ear; and the Tumerican cocktails impartedzip to the conversations. Harmony prevailed. The only unpleasantry occurred when the inebriated‘Hugs’, perhaps with a Rugby World Cup match in mind, announced that he was about to demonstrate his streakingprowess. The host was furious. “Nude or naked, I’ll not haveyou on my premises”, he yelled. “Clear out or I’ll mummifyyou”!Fortunately, big bold Bardy intervened, and peace wasrestored. From MIKE DWYER

December Vetrunner — Page 15VETERANS NATIONAL ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPSPart 5 of a brief summary, byBRYAN THOMAS, of all theVeterans (Masters) National Trackand Field Athletics Championships.Because there have been thirty-one(31) Annual Track and FieldChampionships from 1973 to 2003 theyhave been grouped into eras. The first period, “The FormativeYears (1973-1979)” was published in theJuly Vetrunner and the following monthit was “ACT gets into the action (1980-1984)”. In September it was “Towardsthe World Championships in Melbourne1987 (1985-1988)” and in the OctoberVetrunner Part 4 dealt with “It’s ourturn again (1989-1994)”.This month we look at when theNationals went to the tropics and wehad another go (1995-1999). Nextmonth’s Vetrunner will conclude the sixpart series with the years 2000 to 2003titled “Olympic year and the 21stCentury”.5. Nationals go to the tropics andwe have another go (1995 – 1999).Townsville, 1995: The 23rd AnnualAustralian Veterans’ Track and FieldChampionships and 1st QueenslandMasters Games. The change in venue and traditionalEaster date occurred because it wasconfidently expected that the NorthernTerritory would conduct this year’snationals. However, the NT was unableto organize the event and the states andthe ACT were reluctant to take on thetask at such short notice. We were fortunate that the newlyestablished Queensland Masters Gamesorganizing committee were willing toincorporate our championships intotheir inaugural Games if they receivedassistance from the QVAC. As it turnedout the arrangement was a greatsuccess, as many more veteran athletestraveled up to North Queensland thanthey could have expected if the eventhad been just a Queensland MastersGames.Veteran club members could enterboth our championships and the Games(provided they paid the two entry fees)and so were eligible for two differentmedals if they were placed in an event. The half marathon, often a feature ofMasters Games but not of our annualchampionships, was an extra attractionfor many members. We had twenty-six (26) ACTrepresentatives in Townsville. BobChapman set an M60 Australian Recordfor the 10km road walk with a time of55.10.Perth,1996: 24th annualAustralian Veterans’ Track and FieldChampionships.Thirteen (13) Canberrans broughthome seven gold, 20 silver and sevenbronze medals from their efforts inPerth. Our team consisted of JenBourke, Nola de Chazal, Len Childs,Ken Daniels, Ray Green, LesleyHamilton, Duane Lowry, Fran Schiller,Alice Scott, Jack Thackray, PeterWaddell, Robin Whyte and AlanWilliams. This was the second trip west toparticipate in the “Nationals” for Ken,Lesley and Alan as they had previouslybeen there in 1989 but it was the thirdoccasion for Peter as he had also beeninvolved in 1982.Melbourne, 1997: 25th annualAustralian Veterans’ Track and FieldChampionships. As usual the championships werewell organized and the events alwaysran to time. The VVAC had decided toconduct these championships efficientlybut without the extra “trimmings”,however some visiting athletes andtheir friends were disappointed that aspecial dinner/dance or social eveninghad not been organized. Most of the thirty-eight (38) ACTVets participated in numerous events, but none more so than our two W55sNola de Chazal and Val Chesterton whoalways seemed to be on the move goingfrom event to event. Two athletes sporting gold and bluesinglets were causing a stir over at thehigh jump apron as they leapt to newAustralian Records. John Hunt keptpushing the bar ever higher until heflopped over 1.68m for a new M55Australian record. Not to be outdoneMargaret Taylor upped her own W45Australian record to 1.44m.Brisbane, 1998: 26th annualAustralian Veterans’ Track and FieldChampionships.Very hot and humid conditions andtwo violent thunderstorms were thefeatures of this year’s championshipsheld at ANZA Stadium. One of thethunderstorms was so fierce that someof the afternoon events on one day hadto be held over until the followingmorning upsetting the plannedschedules of many athletes. An “Athletes’ Forum” was conductedfor the first time, and although it wasnot quite what many athletes hadexpected it was partially successful andwill become a significant feature of allfuture national championships.Forty (40) ACTVAC participated inBrisbane, most of them wearing theattractive new competition uniform thathad only been available from just priorto the 6th Australian Masters Gamesheld in Canberra the previous October.Canberra, 1999: 27th annualAustralian Veterans’ Track and FieldChampionships. The success of this year’schampionships was due to the thoroughpreparation by our OrganisingCommittee. Neil Boden, as Convener, was an enthusiastic and efficient leaderof a team consisting of – Ewen Brown(deputy convener), Chris Mahe(secretary), Peter Neill (treasurer) andthe following directors – Colin Bridge(IT support), Ken Daniels / LesleyHamilton (registration and results),Warren Davey / Stuart Reid(competition), Sherryl Greathead(operations manager), Frank Kresse(sponsorship and merchandise), JimO’Donnell (publicity) and RaineThompson (social and awards). One hundred and twenty-five (125,77 men and 48 women) ACT vetsparticipated in the events but manyothers were involved as officials orhelpers. Two World and twenty-sixAustralian Records were set during thechampionships and it was a specialthrill that one of the World and four ofthe Australian Records were by clubmembers. Margaret Taylor hopped, stepped and jumped 10.36m to a newW50 triple jump World record whileKerry Boden (W40 pentathlon), ValChesterton (W55 pole vault), DonFraser (M60 pentathlon) and AtillaSpaits (M60 discus) claimed Australianrecords. M75 Randall Hughes fromVictoria set the other World recordwhen he ran 20.18.04 for 5000m, he alsowon the 1500m in a time of 5.32.09 for anew Australian record.Three innovations were introducedduring these championships. One wasthe presentation of AAVAC trophies tothe most outstanding veteran athleteswithin Australia in the previous yearand it was not surprising that MargaretTaylor was honoured as “Jumper of theYear”.Another was the introduction of aspecial “champion of champions” javelincontest between the javelin championsof each age group competing together ina handicapped contest. Our own PeterO’Brien (M30) was the winner of themen’s javelin handicap event. Butperhaps most memorable innovationwas the Welcoming Ceremony featuringa surprise poetic rendition and a choirsinging the national anthem.

Page 16 — December Vetrunner“WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT WOULD FINISH”BRYAN THOMAS reports on the135th Monthly Throwing Handicapat Masson Street.Torrential rain, thunder and mostworrying of all lightning; for it’s not acomforting place to be out in the middleof a wide open throwing field, standingbeside a tall steel throwing cage, holding metal tipped brollies orhandling discuses and shots during anelectrical storm. After braving theconditions long enough for everyone tohave either two attempts at flinging aslippery discus or heaving an equallyslimy shot the better part of valourprevailed and we retreated to thesanctuary of our car or the limitedprotection of a tarp slung between acouple of pine trees. However because veteran athletesare either determined participants orjust plain stubborn most hungaround praying that the rain wouldeventually ease. And it did. Whenthe lightning passed and the rainwas merely rain and no longer atorrential downpour we went out tofinish the competition. However, aswe were cold and damp it wasagreed that we would have onlyfour and not the usual six throws ineach discipline. Not long after resuming ourcompetition Mother Naturevirtually shone down on theMasson Street Throwing Field andthe remainder of the afternoon wasblessed by warm sunshine.Do you recall when you were alittle kid your parents warning younever to play in storm water drainsbecause they sometimes quicklyand unexpectedly fill tooverflowing? Well if you had everdoubted such a possibility then thisSaturday afternoon provided theproof of such dramatic flooding. Thealmost always-dry storm waterdrain that forms the westernperimeter of the throwing fieldrapidly became a raging torrentthat soon overflowed its banks. Thescene reminded some of us of thetime many years ago when RayGreen threw the hammer welloutside the foul line and watched indismay as it bounced and rolledtowards the flooded drain. Ray gavechase but he was not quick enough tostop it sliding into the raging torrent. We could hear the hammer rattlingalong the concrete floor of the drain butcouldn’t see it beneath the murkywaters. Page 20 — December VetrunnerTRACK AND FIELD SEASON GETS UNDER WAY IN STYLEOCTOBER 16Our track and field season for 2003-2004 opened with a healthy number ofparticipants. This was despite beingrather cool for this time of year and theclock was still to be changed to daylightsaving. As with the club’s handicap events, track and field newcomers will beallowed some leeway before they have tobecome financial members of the club. This is to comply with our liabilityinsurance. The evening kicked off with the firstof the 3000m races on the card with 34competitors, 26 male and eight female.A great first outing in the vets track fornewcomer Sarah Fien with a very smart10.34. Although not breaking ElaineCooper’s W35 9.51 it was still a greatperformance with only three bettertimes posted in the men’s divisions, thebest of them was Dale Moore with a9.52.Winners in the other age groupswere M35 Phil Coggins, M45 MichaelLeahey, M50 Andrew Sutcliffe, M55Geoff Moore, M60 Richard Hilhorst,M65 Tony Booth, W40 Amanda Ruffin,W50 Cathy Montalo and W55 MargaretMcSpadden. Looking at these resultsone sees a fair number of the winnershave moved up an age group.Next up on the track were the1000m Walk and the 60m sprints. Atthe walk M40 Lachlan Wilkinson isback in action with a pretty smart4:49.9, the best of the four malecompetitors. For the women Lisa Wilsoncompleted the two and a half laps in5:04.0. Other age group winners wereM35 Phil Coggins, M45 EwenThompson, M60 Robin Whyte, W40Prue Bradford, W55 Raine Thompsonand W60 Val Chesterton. In the short sprint 16 came to thestart line to try their luck. For the malesthree got under the eight second mark,Stephen Jones 7.2, Craig Edwards andKen Gordon both ran the distance in7.6.For the ladies newcomer W35Carmel Porter posted the best time with8.9 only four tenths adrift of the besttime set by Marlene Reid. Other agegroup bests came from M45 NickBlackaby, M65 Ray Bramwell, M70Jack Thackray, M75 Rad Leovic, W40Jo Feriechs, W50 Maureen Rossiter andanother newcomer W65 ConsieLarmour.A fair few of the sprinters lined-upfor the second sprint, the 400m, thoughas usual it was the case of somecompetitors moving up and otherGetting serious. Pam Faulks has joinedone of the many club training groups thatare available for all athletes.middle-distance runners coming down. The outcome saw M45 John Mortonwinning his first run for the season in56.1 ahead of M40 Stephen Jones, M30Craig Edwards and M45 Phil Whiteboth clocked 57.3. Other good times, aswell as age group wins, came from M50Ken White, M55 Will Foster, M70 JackThackray. For the women in the one lapperthere was quite a contest between W45Marlene Reid and Vicki Matthews withMarlene winning with a 1:09.1 fromVicki’s 1:09.8. W30 Cecilia Schiegel,W35 Carmel Porter and W65 ConsieLarmour all posted wins.Three mixed teams contested the4x100m relay. Although there were norecords the team of Jack Thackary,Marlene Reid, Carmel Porter and AlexLloyd were easy winners in a very smarttime of 58.4The first of the field events, thehammer, was on at the lower field. M70George Mencik dominated the men’sevent and Jayne Hardy similarly thewomen’s. George got in a mighty heaveof 40.68 and Jayne an even better 45.03.Other age group wins were seen byM35 Greg Harris, M45 Steve Wallace,M50 Alex Turbin and M55 Ray Green.Age group winners in the ladiescompetition were W45 Sharon Gibbins,W55 Trish Thomas, W60 Jan Daviesand W65 Mary Wahren. The discus and javelin wereconducted on the main arena. Greatthrows and duels were seen by AlexTurbin and Ray Green, in the end Raygot up by a mere three quarters of ametre with his heave of 39.45. The twobest throws for the women came fromthe usual pair of Jayne Hardy andSharon Gibbins with Jayne some fourmetres ahead at the final throw. Oneconsolation for Sharon is that she hasmoved up to the W45 and no longer hadto pay second fiddle to Jayne in the W40age group. Other age group winnerscame from M30 John Donovan, M35Greg Harris, M40 Craig Wisdom, M45Steve Wallace, M60 Robin Whyte, W50Carmen Carlon, W55 Trish Thomas andW60 Jenny Bourke. In the javelin the only record of themeet went to Kerry Boden and it wasquite a good one that had lasted for over12 years by Trish Thomas 25.62 thatwas set in 1991. Kerry is anotherathlete that has moved up an age groupand her first effort of 29.56 easily brokeTrish’s 1991 mark. As usual JayneHardy was away out in front, as far asmetres are concerned, with a 32.73 totake the W40s honour. Other groupwins went to W55 Trish Thomas andW60 Jen Bourke. For the men RayGreen was again involved in a tighttussle for the best throw of the evening, this time with David Haggith and thistime around Ray had to play secondfiddle with his 29.20 to David’s 31.75.M30 John Donovan, M35 Greg Harriswith his third win for the meet, M40Craig Wisdom, M45 Steve Wallace andM60 Robin Whyte, also saw age groupwins. There were three jumps on offer onthis the opening night of the 2003-2004season, the pole vault and the long andhigh jumps. At the pole M30 John Donovan wasthe only jumper to record a mark. Thenin the long and high jumps he made itfour wins for the meet. Multiple agegroup wins also went to M40 CraigWisdom with his performances in thelong and high jumps. M45 NickBlackaby got his second age group win,as did M50 David Haggith with his highjump effort. Page 22 — December VetrunnerRecord breaker. Great performaceshave seen Sharon Gibbins take theW45 Australian record in the hammer.Of those five new records two camefrom Rad Leovic plus another that heestablished, not bad for someone whohas recently turned 75. Rad’s first twomarks came in the sprints, both the 100and 200m. In the 100m Rad clocked 17.2to beat Gordon Boag’s 17.4 set back in1994. It was another 1994 record thathe broke in the 200m, this time it wasHal Dalheim’s 38.9 with Rad running a36.8. Then later in the meet in the 80mhurdles Rad ran a 15.6 to establish aM75 age group record. Also breaking more than one recordat the meet was Sharon Gibbins.Sharon, who has also moved into thehigher age group of W45 has beenbreaking at least one record every timeshe competes. She broke two of TrishThomas’ long standing marks in theheavy weight and discus. In the heavyweight Sharon got in a top throw withher 13.11 shattering Trish’s 1995 markof 9.50. Then in the discus Sharon gotone out to 30.82 again breaking Trish’s1991 mark of 28.82.The other record of the meet went toGeorge Mencik, yet another of the club’sathletes to take advantage of going upinto another age group, George now aM70 threw the heavy weight way out to16.34 to break Charlie Rann’s 1997mark of 15.86.Indeed George’s record distance wasthe best throw of the night’s competitionwell ahead of the next thrower M50Alex Turbin and M55 Ray Green’seffort. Other age group wins on thenight came from M45 Steve Wallace,M80 Ewen Drummond who himselfwould have been breaking records buthas only recently had a knee replacedand is not fully fit, but it didn’t seem tobother him all that much got in a 9.91,not all that far off the mark he set atthat remarkable Weight Pentathlon justbefore the season began. For the women both W40 JayneHardy and W45 Sharon Gibbins got inefforts over 13m, but were overtaken byW60 Jan Davies’ brilliant 14.54. Otherage group winning marks came fromW55 Trish Thomas, and W65 MaryWahren. In the other throw, the discus, threemen got over 30m and a further 10 gotin throws over 20m so the competitionthis season is fairly good. M50 AlexTurbin, M55 Ray Green and M70George Mencik were in that group over30m with the best coming from Alexwith a 39.25. M30 John Donovan, M35Greg Harris, M40 Richard Holgate, M45Steve Wallace and M60 John Hunt allwon their age groups with heaves ofmore than 20m, the best of them wasJohn’s 26.11, however, David Haggiths’29.56 beat them all only to come runnerupin the M50sFor the W40 Jayne Hardy’s 38.87was away ahead of the rest of the field, including Sharon Gibbins’ W45 recordbreaking heave of 30.82. Other agegroup wins went to W50 CarmenCarlon, W55 Trish Thomas with JenBourke winning the W60s that had anunprecedented five competitors in thefield. At the jumps both M30 JohnDonovan and M40 Andrew Endall, another of this season’s newcompetitors, got up in both the long andtriple jumps. Other age group winnerswere M65 Ray Bramwell in the tripleand M75 Rad Leovic in the long. Theonly women competitor in either ofthese two events was W45 Alex Lloydand she only did the long jump and gotin a 3.85m effort. The longer events this week were a3000/5000m run and then the SpiralHandicap over five laps later in themeet. In the 3000m there was quite atussle between M40s Colin Farlow andMick Corlis as well as M50 TrevorJacobs. Colin got up this time around bythree seconds from Mick and 17 secondsahead of Trevor. Age group wins wereseen by M55 Ken Eynon, M65 RogerAbbott and M70 Otmar Dorfer. For the women Sarah Fien showedher class with an easy overall win witha 10.25 and was in actual fact third overthe line a mere second behind MickCorlis. W35 Lisa Wilson’s 12.53 showsthat she is not that far off her best andwill be the one to watch over the comingseason, providing she concentrates onputting in her effort in only one eventper meet. The other age group winnerswere W40 Pam Faulks, W50 CarmelLynch and W55 Brenda Ford.10 men and one woman opted for theextra five laps with again a tight contestbetween M45s Michael and SteveBradford, both just a touch over 17 anda half minutes but Michael was home acouple of seconds ahead of Steve. Of therest Nick Mesher got in a good run with18.39 as did Geoff Moore with 19.42.M50 Terry Levings and M60 GraemeSmall won their respective age groups. The walks, this week over 1500mwere split into two groups, the racewalkers and the fitness walkers. In therace walks W35 Lisa Wilson took on themen and beat the lot, including topwalkers Mark Worrall and M60 RobinWhyte. M55 Tony Andrews, M65 TerryMunro and W55 Alice Scott were agegroup winners. In the fitness walk W50 BevSibthorpe, one of the newcomers to thisseason’s track, was over two minutesahead of the pack with her 9.50 withanother newcomer W55 Carol Kelly,W40 Margaret Mesher and W60 JeanHeath taking out their respective agegroups.Of the three sprints on offer, the 100and 200m and the short hurdles, the bignews of Rad Leovic’s effort was reportedat the top of the report. However, thebest times came from M40 StephenJones with a double in 11.6 and 24.8respectively. Good efforts in the 100mwere seen by M30 Craig Edwards andM40 Ken Gordon with M45 Ken Smith,M65 Ray Bramwell and M70 JackThackray all winning age group marks.A pretty good turnout for the women inthe shorter sprint with 10 getting on theblocks waiting on the starter’s gun tofire. The best of them were W35 CarmelPorter 14 seconds even and W45Marlene Reid 13.7 and W40 VickiMatthews 14.5. W45 Bev Breen andW65 Consie Larmour were age groupwinners. In the 200m M30 Craig Edwardshad to settle for the runners-up spotbehind Stephen Jones but at least hetook out his age group. Both Mark Paineand M45 John Morton ran 26.3 withJohn taking the age group win but Markwas pushed into second spot. In thatM45 age group was an unprecedentednine in the field. Both M70 JackThackray and M75 Rad Leovic won agegroup marks. For the ladies it was a pretty tightcontest between W45 Marlene Reid,W40 Vicki Matthews and W45 KerryBoden. Both Marlene and Vicki wereequal on 29.7 with Kerry only twotenths adrift. Age group wins also wentto W35 Carmel Porter, W50 Maureen

Rossiter and W65 Consie Larmour.Moving onto the 1500m the biggestfield of the meet was ready for action. And action it was between the top three,M40 Dale Moore, M45 John Morton andM35 Anthony Perry, Dale squeezing in anarrow win with 4:28.2, John 4:28.6 andAnthony 4:30.8. Once again big fields inthe M40s (eight) and M45s (seven),runners-up were M40s Colin Farlow andthe M45s Phil Whyte. In the M50s KenWhite won from George Kubitzky and inthe M55s Will Foster had an easy win.Tony Booth was the lone competitor inthe M65s.For the ladies W35 Sarah Fienstamped her authority on the racegetting in a 5:06.7 ahead of W45 MariaO’Reilly’s 5:37.8 although one mustmention that Maria has beenincapacitated over the last few weeksand this was her first test leading up tothe Masters. Other age group winnerswere W30 Cecilia Shlegel, W40 PrueBradford, W50 Kathy Sims, W55Margaret McSpadden and W65 SueCounsel.Only two teams contested the4x400m relay that saw Vicki Matthews,Craig Edwards, Colin Farlow and DaleMoore running a 4:10.6 to beat MarleneReid, Anthony Perry, Steve Bradfordand John Morton who ran a 4:12.5.In the 110m hurdles M30 JohnDonovan was the only runner. The final race of the night was theSpiral Handicap over five laps.Leading the 35 runners home wasGeoff Moore who started way back ingroup 31 giving the first starters a fiveminute start. A pretty good effort byGeoff as some of them got a two lapstart out of the five. For the record Geoffran the course in a net 7.58. Roy Joneswas the runner-up with a net time of9.16 from Dale Moore’s 7.20, whichincidentally was the best time in therace for the men with CharmaineKnobel home with a 9.14 the leadingwoman.3000mM40 Colin Farlow 10:21, Mick Corlis 10:24, RossGregg 11:58M50 Trevor Jacobs 10:38, George Kubitzky 14:19M55 Ken Eynon 12:01, Will Foster 13:56, Bob Parker14:27, Alan Norden 14:49M65 Roger Abbott 13:48M70 Otmar Dorfer 15:38W35 Sarah Fien 10:25, Lisa Wilson 12:53, AmandaWalker 13:10W40 Pam Faulks 15:39, Prue Bradford 17:00W50 Carmel Lynch 17:59W55 Brenda Ford 15:33, Alice Scott 16:27, Carol Kelly18:16.5000mM40 Nick Mesher 18:39, Don Smith 19:53M45 Michael Leahey 17:33, Steve Bradford 17:35M50 Terry Levings 24:05, Mario Larocca 23:42M55 Geoff Moore 19:42, Kevin Chamberlain 20:47,Michael Gardner 24:37M60 Graeme Small 24:54W60 Sue Counsel 25:12.1500m Race WalkM40 Mark Worrall 08:31.2M55 Tony Andrews 10:08.7M60 Robin Whyte 08:23.1M65 Terry Munro 10:45.3W35 Lisa Wilson 08:09.4W55 Alice Scott 11:29.5, Raine Thompson 12:01.8.1500 Fitness WalkW40 Margaret Mesher 13:04.5W50 Bev Sibthorpe 9:50.0, Carmel Lynch 12:02.1W55 Carol Kelly 12:02.3W60 Jean Heath 13:11.1.100mM30 Craig Edwards 12.4, John Donovan 14.5M40 Stephen Jones 11.6, Ken Gordon 11.9M45 Ken Smith 13.2, Stephen Knight 13.2, LeoKennedy 13.4, Stephen Dawes 15.7M65 Ray Bramwell 15.5M70 Jack Thackray 14.4M75 Rad Leovic 17.2 (ACT rec)W35 Carmel Porter 14.0W40 Vicki Matthews 14.5W45 Marlene Reid 13.7, Sharon Gibbins 14.8 ,AlexLloyd 15.1W50 Bev Breen 15.2, Maureen Rossiter 15.6, JillBrown 16.6, Carmen Carlon 28.3W65 Consie Larmour 18.0.1500mM35 Anthony Perry 4:30.8M40 Dale Moore 4:28.2, Colin Farlow 4:43.9, PaulConsidine 4:51.9, Richard Faulks 4:54.5, Nick Mesher5:03.5, Bryce Anderson 5:08.7, Peter Cullen 5:14.2,Ken Phillips 5:15.0M45 John Morton 4:28.6, Phil White 4:48.5, RogerDecember Vetrunner — Page 23Outstanding performances. This was the smallest field thatour vets track program has seen forsome years. However, we still witnessed two verygood records, both by our highlytalented female athletes and third fromone of our many elder statesmen. The first record breaking mark camein the first event of the meet for thethrowers, the hammer, sadly for most ofus it was down on the lower field whereSharon Gibbins got in a tremendousheave to break the W45 Australianhammer throw record with a 42.69.Looking at the 2003 AMA Handbook, that record was held by Tasmania’s LisaKrisch with a throw of 42.44.Then came Kerry Boden’s run in the200m hurdles where she established anew W45 mark with a 37.1.Congratulations to both of thesecompetitors for their efforts.Incidentally it should be noticed thatboth of these women have moved up agegroups from the W40s to the W45. Itseems like a handy time to move into anew division with the AMG 2003 trackand field program only three days away.Despite a lack for full mobility due toa “knee job” Ewen Drummond is stillproducing the goods and striving tobreak new records now that he hasmoved up an age group, this time it wasfrom one of the elder statesmen of ourclub, Ewen Drummond. Ewen threw thehammer to a distance of 21.90 but alittle shy of the great 24.13 he didearlier this year. Well done Ewen. Alsoin record breaking form was M40 JeffKing, see below for his performanceGoing through the card for the restof the program. In that hammer event we had threethrowers getting in efforts of over 39m,M50 Alex Turbin, M55 Ray Green andM70 George Mencik. Other age groupbest came from M34 Greg Harris andM45 Steve Wallace. For the womenJayne Hardy just pipped SharonGibbins for the best heave of the nightbut Sharon got the Australian record.Other age group winners were W55Trish Thomas and W60 Jan Davies. On the track it was the first of thecombined 3000/5000m races with thebest time for the men in the 3000mgoing to John Woodall with a narrowtwo second win from fellow M45 MichaelLeahey. In the M40s three runnerscame home in under 11 minutes, ColinFarlow, Nick Mesher and Mick Corlis.M50 Ken White, M55 Ken Eynon andM60 Robin Whyte all came out to toptheir age groups. Fairly good field ofwomen also ran the first 3000m racewith the best performance coming fromW35 Amanda Walker from W45 AnnMarie Calnan and W40 GabrielleBrown. W50 Carmel Lynch, W55Rosemary Parker and W65 Cory Collinsall had age group wins. Cory’s run wasall that more special as it was her firsttrack outing since she had a bad fall atthe Urambi Hills handicap a couple ofmonths back and suffered a quite badwrist injury.Only four runners went on tocomplete the 5000m with M45 AndyHorsburgh posting the best time fromM55 Terry Levings and fellow M45 NickBlackaby. The only female in the eventwas W35 Sarah Fien who posted apretty good 18.36.Not a great deal of support in thethree jumps that were on offer withthree in the pole vault and five each inthe triple and high jumps. In the poleM30 David Simpson had the best effortand in the triple the top jump camefrom newcomer M45 Andrew Endall andin the high David was again in action topost the best performance. In the 2000m race-walk M40Lachlan Wilkinson and W35 LisaWilson were only separated by a fewseconds as they posted the best times forthe men and women. Also M55 TonyAndrew, M65 Terry Munro and W60 ValChesterton saw age group wins. In thefitness walk over the same distance Iwas fortunate to come home with thebest time in my first track event in mynew age group the M70s. Others to toptheir groups were M50 John Walsh,W45 Kate Phillips, W50 Bev Sibthorpeand w55 Carol Kelly. The first of the two sprints on offerwas over 100m with Ken Telfer showingthat he is the one to lead the sprintsthis season with a sparkling run of asmidgen over 11 seconds. M30 DavidSimpson brought his age group win atthe meet with M45 Leo Kennedy, M50Jim White, M55 Stephen Watson, M60Kevin Blewitt, M65 Ray Bramwell andM70 Jack Thackray all posting wins. For the four ladies in the event the best

performance came from W35 CarmelPorter with W40 Amanda Ruffin andW45 Alex Lloyd winning theirrespective age groups. In the 400m it was a welcome returnto the track of one of our bestperformers not only at our track meetsbut at other outside events as well, M40Jeff King. As one would have expectedhe was by far the best performer of therace with a record breaking 52.7 beatingRob Barbaro’s mark of 53.1 set back in1992. Age group bests came from M30John Donovan, M45 Ken Smith, M50George Kubitzky, M55 Alan Norden andM70 Jack Thackray. Of the four womenin the event the best performances camefrom W45 Sharon Gibbins and W50Maureen Rossiter. One of the best fields of the nightcame in the 800m with the top heatproducing one of the best races at thismeet. M40 Dale Moore led the way fromM35 Anthony Perry with never morethan a second between them, in the endDale was the stronger as they camedown the final straight to win by morethan that second. It was good to seeMaria O’Reilly has got over her injurythat threatened to put a spoke in theher AMG aspirations as she got backinto the swing of it with an easy win inthe women’s section of the 800m. Goodefforts also came from Bryce Anderson,Peter Cullen and Ken Phillips eventhough they didn’t win in their agegroups, as was also the case with DaveMcClelland and Jim White. Those agegroup wins went to M45 AndyHorsburgh, M50 George Kubitzky, M55Will Foster and M60 Tony Booth. In thewomen’s events wins came to W30Cecilia Schlegel, W40 Amanda Ruffin,W50 Maureen Rossiter, W55 Carol Kellyand W60 Val Chesterton. In the 200m hurdles where KerryBoden established her W45 record therewas a spectacular fall in the straightfrom John Donovan. Even though Johnhas easily coped with higher hurdles inthe men’s 110m races he seemed tofalter on these much lower hurdles as hehit the first hurdle in the straight prettyhard and went down. Fortunately forhim he managed to perform aspectacular roll as he came downalthough shaken but not badly hurt.It was a different story in the throwswith John winning the M30s in both thediscus and javelin. M35 Greg Harrisalso had a couple of wins in the hammerand shot. M55 Ray Green went onebetter winning all three throwing eventsthat were on offer, as did Jayne Hardyand Trish Thomas. Going through therest of the three throws at the hammerM45 Steve Wallace got up as did M70George Mencik and M80 EwenDrummond in the men’s division then inthe women’s division W60 Jan Daviesgot up.Turning to the javelin M35 RichardHolgate, M45 Martin Crowe, M50 DavidHaggith, M60 Kevin Blewitt and M65Terry Munro got wins. And for theladies the age group wins went to W40Kerry Boden, W50 Carmen Carlon andagain to W60 Jan Davies. At the shot the’ never say die’ shookoff his fall in the hurdles to win theM30s. Other wins went to M45 StephenDawes and M60 Robin White and forthe women the age wins went to W45Sharon Gibbins, W50 Carmen Carlonand W60 Jen Bourke. The final events for the week werethe second running of the 3000/5000mraces with only two tackling the 5000and six the 3000. In the shorter eventM40 Peter Cullen posted the best timefrom M55s Will Foster and Bob Parkerthen came M45 Nick Blackaby. The onlywomen in the event was W55 RosemaryParker.
