Page 16 — December Vetrunner“WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT WOULD FINISH”BRYAN THOMAS reports on the135th Monthly Throwing Handicapat Masson Street.Torrential rain, thunder and mostworrying of all lightning; for it’s not acomforting place to be out in the middleof a wide open throwing field, standingbeside a tall steel throwing cage,holding metal tipped brollies orhandling discuses and shots during anelectrical storm. After braving theconditions long enough for everyone tohave either two attempts at flinging aslippery discus or heaving an equallyslimy shot the better part of valourprevailed and we retreated to thesanctuary of our car or the limitedprotection of a tarp slung between acouple of pine trees.However bec<strong>au</strong>se veteran athletesare either determined participants orjust plain stubborn most hungaround praying that the rain wouldeventually ease. And it did. Whenthe lightning passed and the rainwas merely rain and no longer atorrential downpour we went out tofinish the competition. However, aswe were cold and damp it wasagreed that we would have onlyfour and not the usual six throws ineach discipline.Not long after resuming ourcompetition Mother Naturevirtually shone down on theMasson Street Throwing Field andthe remainder of the afternoon wasblessed by warm sunshine.Do you recall when you were alittle kid your parents warning younever to play in storm water drainsbec<strong>au</strong>se they sometimes quicklyand unexpectedly fill tooverflowing? Well if you had everdoubted such a possibility then thisSaturday afternoon provided theproof of such dramatic flooding. Thealmost always-dry storm waterdrain that forms the westernperimeter of the throwing fieldrapidly became a raging torrentthat soon overflowed its banks. Thescene reminded some of us of thetime many years ago when RayGreen threw the hammer welloutside the foul line and watched indismay as it bounced and rolledtowards the flooded drain. Ray gavechase but he was not quick enough tostop it sliding into the raging torrent.We could hear the hammer rattlingalong the concrete floor of the drain butcouldn’t see it beneath the murkywaters. He now resides inNowra and has entered the MastersGames so came up to get in some muchneeded competition.
