This was the smallest field thatour vets track program has seen forsome years. However, we still witnessed two verygood records, both by our highlytalented female athletes and third fromone of our many elder statesmen. The first record breaking mark camein the first event of the meet for thethrowers, the hammer, sadly for most ofus it was down on the lower field whereSharon Gibbins got in a tremendousheave to break the W45 Australianhammer throw record with a 42.69.Looking at the 2003 AMA Handbook, that record was held by Tasmania’s LisaKrisch with a throw of 42.44.Then came Kerry Boden’s run in the200m hurdles where she established anew W45 mark with a 37.1.Congratulations to both of thesecompetitors for their efforts.Incidentally it should be noticed thatboth of these women have moved up agegroups from the W40s to the W45. Itseems like a handy time to move into anew division with the AMG 2003 trackand field program only three days away.Despite a lack for full mobility due toa “knee job” Ewen Drummond is stillproducing the goods and striving tobreak new records now that he hasmoved up an age group, this time it wasfrom one of the elder statesmen of ourclub, Ewen Drummond. Ewen threw thehammer to a distance of 21.90 but alittle shy of the great 24.13 he didearlier this year. Well done Ewen. Alsoin record breaking form was M40 JeffKing, see below for his performanceGoing through the card for the restof the program. In that hammer event we had threethrowers getting in efforts of over 39m,M50 Alex Turbin, M55 Ray Green andM70 George Mencik. Other age groupbest came from M34 Greg Harris andM45 Steve Wallace. For the womenJayne Hardy just pipped SharonGibbins for the best heave of the nightbut Sharon got the Australian record.Other age group winners were W55Trish Thomas and W60 Jan Davies. On the track it was the first of thecombined 3000/5000m races with thebest time for the men in the 3000mgoing to John Woodall with a narrowtwo second win from fellow M45 MichaelLeahey. In the M40s three runnerscame home in under 11 minutes, ColinFarlow, Nick Mesher and Mick Corlis.M50 Ken White, M55 Ken Eynon andM60 Robin Whyte all came out to toptheir age groups. Fairly good field ofwomen also ran the first 3000m racewith the best performance coming fromW35 Amanda Walker from W45 AnnMarie Calnan and W40 GabrielleBrown. W50 Carmel Lynch, W55Rosemary Parker and W65 Cory Collinsall had age group wins. Cory’s run wasall that more special as it was her firsttrack outing since she had a bad fall atthe Urambi Hills handicap a couple ofmonths back and suffered a quite badwrist injury.Only four runners went on tocomplete the 5000m with M45 AndyHorsburgh posting the best time fromM55 Terry Levings and fellow M45 NickBlackaby. The only female in the eventwas W35 Sarah Fien who posted apretty good 18.36.Not a great deal of support in thethree jumps that were on offer withthree in the pole vault and five each inthe triple and high jumps. In the poleM30 David Simpson had the best effortand in the triple the top jump camefrom newcomer M45 Andrew Endall andin the high David was again in action topost the best performance. In the 2000m race-walk M40Lachlan Wilkinson and W35 LisaWilson were only separated by a fewseconds as they posted the best times forthe men and women. Also M55 TonyAndrew, M65 Terry Munro and W60 ValChesterton saw age group wins. In thefitness walk over the same distance Iwas fortunate to come home with thebest time in my first track event in mynew age group the M70s. Others to toptheir groups were M50 John Walsh,W45 Kate Phillips, W50 Bev Sibthorpeand w55 Carol Kelly. The first of the two sprints on offerwas over 100m with Ken Telfer showingthat he is the one to lead the sprintsthis season with a sparkling run of asmidgen over 11 seconds. M30 DavidSimpson brought his age group win atthe meet with M45 Leo Kennedy, M50Jim White, M55 Stephen Watson, M60Kevin Blewitt, M65 Ray Bramwell andM70 Jack Thackray all posting wins. For the four ladies in the event the best
performance came from W35 CarmelPorter with W40 Amanda Ruffin andW45 Alex Lloyd winning theirrespective age groups. In the 400m it was a welcome returnto the track of one of our bestperformers not only at our track meetsbut at other outside events as well, M40Jeff King. As one would have expectedhe was by far the best performer of therace with a record breaking 52.7 beatingRob Barbaro’s mark of 53.1 set back in1992. Age group bests came from M30John Donovan, M45 Ken Smith, M50George Kubitzky, M55 Alan Norden andM70 Jack Thackray. Of the four womenin the event the best performances camefrom W45 Sharon Gibbins and W50Maureen Rossiter. One of the best fields of the nightcame in the 800m with the top heatproducing one of the best races at thismeet. M40 Dale Moore led the way fromM35 Anthony Perry with never morethan a second between them, in the endDale was the stronger as they camedown the final straight to win by morethan that second. It was good to seeMaria O’Reilly has got over her injurythat threatened to put a spoke in theher AMG aspirations as she got backinto the swing of it with an easy win inthe women’s section of the 800m. Goodefforts also came from Bryce Anderson,Peter Cullen and Ken Phillips eventhough they didn’t win in their agegroups, as was also the case with DaveMcClelland and Jim White. Those agegroup wins went to M45 AndyHorsburgh, M50 George Kubitzky, M55Will Foster and M60 Tony Booth. In thewomen’s events wins came to W30Cecilia Schlegel, W40 Amanda Ruffin,W50 Maureen Rossiter, W55 Carol Kellyand W60 Val Chesterton. In the 200m hurdles where KerryBoden established her W45 record therewas a spectacular fall in the straightfrom John Donovan. Even though Johnhas easily coped with higher hurdles inthe men’s 110m races he seemed tofalter on these much lower hurdles as hehit the first hurdle in the straight prettyhard and went down. Fortunately forhim he managed to perform aspectacular roll as he came downalthough shaken but not badly hurt.It was a different story in the throwswith John winning the M30s in both thediscus and javelin. M35 Greg Harrisalso had a couple of wins in the hammerand shot. M55 Ray Green went onebetter winning all three throwing eventsthat were on offer, as did Jayne Hardyand Trish Thomas. Going through therest of the three throws at the hammerM45 Steve Wallace got up as did M70George Mencik and M80 EwenDrummond in the men’s division then inthe women’s division W60 Jan Daviesgot up.Turning to the javelin M35 RichardHolgate, M45 Martin Crowe, M50 DavidHaggith, M60 Kevin Blewitt and M65Terry Munro got wins. And for theladies the age group wins went to W40Kerry Boden, W50 Carmen Carlon andagain to W60 Jan Davies. At the shot the’ never say die’ shookoff his fall in the hurdles to win theM30s. Other wins went to M45 StephenDawes and M60 Robin White and forthe women the age wins went to W45Sharon Gibbins, W50 Carmen Carlonand W60 Jen Bourke. The final events for the week werethe second running of the 3000/5000mraces with only two tackling the 5000and six the 3000. In the shorter eventM40 Peter Cullen posted the best timefrom M55s Will Foster and Bob Parkerthen came M45 Nick Blackaby. The onlywomen in the event was W55 RosemaryParker. Then in the longer race M40Peter Brown won from M35 DamianRutledge.Early 3000mM40 Colin Farlow 10:25, Nick Mesher 10:46, MickCorlis 10:55, Ross Gregg 11:35M45 John Woodall 10:09, Michael Leahey 10:11, IanColquhoun 11:47M50 Ken White 13:16M55 Ken Eynon 11:55, Bob Parker 14:15, Will Foster14:20, Alan Norden 14:48M60 Robin Whyte 16:48December Vetrunner — Page 25In the distance races.
