However, aswe were cold and damp it wasagreed that we would have onlyfour and not the usual six throws ineach discipline. Not long after resuming ourcompetition Mother Naturevirtually shone down on theMasson Street Throwing Field andthe remainder of the afternoon wasblessed by warm sunshine.Do you recall when you were alittle kid your parents warning younever to play in storm water drainsbecause they sometimes quicklyand unexpectedly fill tooverflowing? Well if you had everdoubted such a possibility then thisSaturday afternoon provided theproof of such dramatic flooding. Thealmost always-dry storm waterdrain that forms the westernperimeter of the throwing fieldrapidly became a raging torrentthat soon overflowed its banks. Thescene reminded some of us of thetime many years ago when RayGreen threw the hammer welloutside the foul line and watched indismay as it bounced and rolledtowards the flooded drain. Ray gavechase but he was not quick enough tostop it sliding into the raging torrent. We could hear the hammer rattlingalong the concrete floor of the drain butcouldn’t see it beneath the murkywaters.
