I have mentioned TerriJones and myself along with Mick Corlisgetting the top points from JohnMorton. crew willnow be able to relax after they had heldyet another top year of competition.It is unfortunate that although thecompetition sub-committee has tried togive everyone in all disciplines of trackand field a fair go, some of the eveningscould have been better supported.However, it was good to see that thefinal night, which also acts as thepresentation of the annual awards waswell supported.As most of the regular track andfield people know the club offers a widerange of handicap events giving thechance for everyone to get to the top inthe Daniels Sprint races, thePennington middle distances events, theBoag Awards for sprinters and hurdlers,the Throwers Track Series and last butnot least the Adler Series Handicaps forthe distance runners.End of season performancesAlthough this meet was the finallyfor the season there were still some topperformances as well, including yetanother two records be written to ourlong list of record- breakingperformances that we have seen thisseason.First to the race walks where ouroldest athlete this season, M80 AudunFristad, set about establishing a newM80 record over 800m. Audun comes upfrom the South Coast regularly, usuallyto compete in the throwing handicaps.This year he has combined the two andwas at the track to present the annualFristad Awards for Excellence inPerformance for our male and femaleathletes. He also took the chance toparticipate in the walking event andwith a 6:45.3 established an M80 record.Other performances in the walk sawtwo females “scoop the pool”, firstly LisaWilson recording the best time of eightwalkers in a remarkable time of 3:50.1and in second position, more than aminute adrift, was Monika Short with a4:54.6 and although technically a‘Fitness Walker’ I was third with a5:06.5.
The other record of the meet camefrom W35 Jenny Pluck in the 400mwhere she ran a 60.07 to take a secondoff her own record set only a couple ofweeks ago. Jenny took the chance andran in the fastest heat that includedguns of the likes of Ken Telfer, CraigEdwards, Colin Farlow and RichardFaulks. Craig was having a bit of awhinge before they got the gun abouthis drawing of the outside lane again.However, it must have been a goodomen for him has he produced a PB in56.1 only beaten by Ken’s 53.5. Colinwas third and Richard fourth. It was awelcome return to the track for TonyBooth who has been out all season witha problem achilles, he still managed totake the M60s with what is for him aslow run of 1:21.7. Other age groupwinners were M45 Nick Blackaby, M50Pat Stakelum and M55 Alan Norden.For the “fair sex” besides Jenny’s PB,Vicki Matthews, Maureen Rossiter (yesfor once Maureen didn’t break a recordin the 400m like she has been doingrepeatedly), but her 65.9 was prettyclose to her record breaking mark of65.26 set in the Club Championships acouple of weeks earlier), Val Chesterton,Cory Collins and Gwen Gleeson had agegroup winsUnlike the last couple of weeks therewas quite a good roll-up for the3000/5000m races that we have beenopening the program with each week.As they got underway it was a fourpersonrace for the first couple of lapswith Andrew Bishop, Mick Corlis, SteveAppleby and Michael Leahey in theleading bunch. First to drop off, as thepace heated-up was Steve, then Mickleaving Andrew and Michael to fight itout between them. It wasn’t till partway through the final lap that Michaelmade his move and never looked back.He eventually won the 3000m in 10.01with Andrew 10.06, Mick 10.27 withSteve managing to hold onto fourthposition with an 11.17 from the fastfinishing Ken White who was also timedat 11.17. Other age group winnersincluded M50 Terry Levings, M55 KenEynon and M60 Graeme Small.For the women Kathy Sims,although far from her best, finished on12.14 well ahead of Amanda Walker’s12.56. Others to take out age group winswere W40 Pam Faulks, W55 MargaretMcSpadden and W65 Terri Jones.Of the five that went on to completethe 5000m, three of them were M40sand they filled the top three positions.Nick Mesher in what was his best effortof the season ran a 19.32, RogerPilkington 19.47 and Don Smith rightsmack bang on 20 minutes. The othertwo were M60 Mike Worsley and M65Peter Trotter.In the 100m the first three in each ofthe heats were Michael Roche from AlanNorden and Nick Blackaby then VickiMatthews was too good for RogerStewart and Sharon Gibbins and finallyKen Telfer had too much speed for DionDevow and Kevin Matthews.We had for the first time theunusual race distance of 1000m that is abit too much for the sprinters and tooshort for our distance experts, but manyof them had a go anyway.The third heat was a beauty thatincluded the all conquering ColinFarlow against John Morton, John hasbeen playing ‘second fiddle’ to Colin thisseason and the only time I canremember Colin not winning a race wasagainst Anthony Perry in a 1500mevent. Colin, as he usually does wentout in front with John right on his tailnot giving an inch, just after going intothe last 400m John came right up onColin’s shoulder and going down theback straight pulled in another gear andsoon established a ten metre gap thatfor some reason Colin wasn’t able to doanything about. Going up the last 100mColin certainly had a go and narrowedthe gap but left it all too late with Johnhome in 2:47.0 to Colin’s 2:47.6, withAnthony Perry third in 2:51.2. In theother age groups wins went to M45Michael Leahey, M50 Neil Boden, M55Kevin Chamberlain, M60 Mike Worsleyand M65 Peter Trotter.For the three girls in the fieldCharmaine Knobel was ahead ofMargaret McSpadden and Terri Jonesat the finish.Only Roger Stewart and ColinRobbie took on the 100m hurdles withRoger posting a 20.2 and Colin a 21.8.The final track race for the seasonwas the parlauf relays in which each ofthe five team members have to run the400, 300, 200 and 100m distance. Rightfrom the beginning, after RogerStewart’s team of Tony Booth, AndrewMalone, Anthony Perry and JennyPluck had completed their 400m it wasobvious that they were the team to beat.But how much and in what time.However, maybe I wasn’t giving theother teams, especially the “RobertBarbaro Five”, any respect as they ateinto that lead and the end were onlybeaten by a matter of less than a minuteby Roger’s team on 14.52. Jim White’steam was third in 15.50 and DionDevow’s mob 15.52.Three throws and two jumps were upfor grabs in the final field events of theMay Vetrunner — Page 7season.In the heavy weight newcomer DavidTow won the M40s as did M45 SteveWallace, M50 Robert Kennelly and M75Ewen Drummond. For the ladies W60Jan Davies with a 15.45 was the best ofthe four that were in the competition,with Nola De Chazal, second in that agegroup, had a PB of 7.28. W40 JayneHardy and W55 Trish Thomas were theother age group winners.In the triple jump Ken Smith andNick Blackaby were first and second inthe M45s as were Colin Robbie and RayBramwell in the M65s. Sharon Gibbinswas the only woman in the field.Then in the last jump of the meet,the long jump, M30 Andrew Malone5.14 and M40 Kevin Matthews 5.29headed the field with Nick Blackablytaking the M45s and Colin Robbie andRay Bramwell again first and second inthe M65. Once more Sharon Gibbinswas the lone female competitor.A bit more action in the discus andthe javelin with a combined total of 42competitors taking part.In the discus the best throw in themen’s division came from M50 BobBanens just ahead of M60 Attila Spaits.Other age group winners were M30John Donovan, M40 Craig Wisdom witha PB of 27.28, M45 Steve Wallace, M55Phil Toomey, M65 Colin Robbie, M70Rad Leovic and M75 Ewen Drummond.For the women Jayne Hardy’s 36.38 wasway ahead of the rest in winning theW40s. Other age group winners wereW50 Margaret Taylor, W55 TrishThomas and W60 Jan Davies.In the javelin Bob Banens and JayneHardy got in top throws to take out theM50s and W40s respectively. In othermen’s groups Craig Edwards won theM30s as did Craig Wisdom M40s, PhilToomey M55s, Robin Whyte M60s, RadLeovic M70s and Ewen DrummondM75s.
