Back row (left–right): Alice Lisiewski,Carolyn DellaCamera, Courtney Lisiewski,Jamie Strack, and Kaylee Ruhl.Softerside of givingCancer patients and their families and caregivers find themselves surroundedby hope, warmth, and support at Tunnell Cancer Center. Theynot only find the superb care and medical expertise they need from thephysicians and staff, but also experience the profound gift of friendship andkindness from people in the community who are there to share their battlewith them. Some people donate their time and their unique skills. Othersbear gifts or give donations. All bring their love and kindness with them, hoping that they are making a difference in the lives of those they touch.More than eight years ago, for example, the Faith, Hope, Love Quiltersbegan donating quilts to the cancer center for patients undergoingchemotherapy.“They sit there a long time and they get cold,” says organizer ShirleyLoveland. The organization is made up of between 25 and 30 women “who love toquilt and want to help others.” For convenience, the women meet twice amonth at the St. Matthew By-the-Sea United Methodist Church, in Fenwick. While they have been knitting a variety of items for several different charitiessince 1997, they have always supported Tunnell Cancer Center patients. Inlate October, they presented the center with the 6,000th quilt. The numberof people who support Faith, Hope, Love Quilters has grown, and the groupalways is appreciative of donated fabrics.Former Tunnell Cancer Center patients, as well as other friends and supporters, regularly bring homemade baked goods to the center for patientsand staff to enjoy. And with cookies always being a popular item, CarolynDellaCamera, a local cookie manager for The Girls Scouts of the ChesapeakeSara Aldrich, of Lewes, plays the piano for cancerpatients and their families in the Tunnell Cancer Center.Cover: The Faith, Hope, Love Quilters, of St. Matthew’s By-the-Sea United Methodist Church, in Fenwick, meet weekly tosew colorful and comforting quilts for Tunnell Cancer Center patients. They have made and donated more than 6,000 quilts.2

Bay Council, thought that Girl Scout cookies might be welcomed, too.“My sister had battled esophagus cancer and the place was like a family.I can’t say enough about how good Tunnell Cancer Center was.”Mrs. DellaCamera knew that every year there were excess cookies that weresent to the troops overseas, so she hoped some of them could go to the cancercenter. She got permission from the council to take 40 cases to the cancer center, where she was joined by a group of Brownies, and one younger brother, whowanted to show their support for the patients.“There is always an emphasis on community service in scouting,” says Mrs.DellaCamera. “So the girls were excited to take part.”Another supporter is Bobbi Berry, owner of Today’s Hair, in RehobothBeach. For the last five years, Ms. Berry has taken used wigs that her clientshave donated, washed and restyled them, and given them to Tunnell CancerCenter, where, in turn, they are free to patients who have lost their hair becauseof chemotherapy. She also washes and restyles wigs that patients have donatedback to the center after their hair has grown back. Ms. Berry then cuts the wigsat no cost for Tunnell Cancer Center patients.“It’s my way of giving back to the community,” she says.Sara Aldrich, of Lewes, volunteers at Tunnell Cancer Center to play the pianoin the lobby area for the enjoyment of patients, their families, and an untoldnumber of others who share their hearts. Frances Kershaw has been a regularsupporter, bringing hats and scarves and other items she has sewn. Members ofthe Nifty Knitters also hold cancer patients close to their hearts as they make lapblankets, scarves, and hats. Others in the community bring books and puzzlesfor patients’ entertainment.“There are so many people who are there for our patients,” says Cherrie Rich,Director of Oncology Services. “And our cancer survivors return to support ournew patients and to thank our staff. It is very heartwarming.”William Rigler regularly works in the Healing Garden, located outside thewindows of the chemotherapy area. He isa part-time employee of Baywood Greensgolf course, which is owned by theTunnell Companies. Although Mr. Rigler’stime is donated by his employer, his workis filled with love and empathy.“I am a cancer survivor,” he says. “Notfrom here but from Pennsylvania. But Iknow what they are going through. AndI hope that when they look out in thegarden as they sit there all those hours, they can enjoy its beauty and relax.” nBaywood Greens donates gardener William Rigler’stime three days a week to tend the Healing Garden atthe Tunnell Cancer Center.Cancer patients and theirfamilies and caregivers findthemselves surrounded byhope, warmth, and supportat Tunnell Cancer Center.Bobbi Berry, owner of Today’s Hair, in Rehoboth Beach, donates her timecleaning and styling wigs for cancer patients who have lost their hair.3

Beebe School of NursingExpand Your Career Options“I never realized howmuch you can do asa nurse.”Shauna JacobsBeebe School of Nursing StudentBeebe School of Nursing student Shauna Jacobs learns auscultationand IV skills with assistance from instructor Joy Bartell, MSN, RN, CNE.Her patient is Deborah Bowser, of Dagsboro.Shauna Jacobs, of Ocean View, starts her day early to make sure she is preparedfor her demanding course work as a student at Beebe School of Nursing. She’sdetermined to be successful.“The program is a full-time job plus,” the 20-year-old admits. “There’s definitelya lot to know.”Shauna recalls how she had to be prepared to answer any question herteacher might have asked her when her class did one of the “head-to-toe” assessmentsof a patient. Students have to know the patient’s history, as well as presentingsymptoms and vital signs. They have to do independent research on anexisting illness the patient may have—such as diabetes or heart disease—and theinteractions and side effects of any medications that would be prescribed for theparticular illness.“There are tests every week, and they get progressively more difficult,” Shaunasays. Shauna and the other students learn about real-life situations, what theirresponsibility would be as a nurse, and how much medical and nursing knowledgethey would have to have in a real-life situation.“We want to make sure that the students have a high level of confidence andthat they are prepared to give safe patient care after they have graduated,” says4

Constance E. Bushey, RN, BSN, MEd, Director ofthe Beebe School of Nursing. She explains that thefaculty makes sure each student has a well-roundededucational experience. An important aspect of whatstudents are taught is that patient assessments arean excellent way to learn about different types ofpatients and a wide array of illnesses.Shauna is among a select group of about 30 studentswho are accepted each fall into Beebe Schoolof Nursing. The program, taught by registered nurseswith advanced degrees, offers education and theoryin the classroom, as well as hands-on experience inBeebe Medical Center under direct faculty supervision. In order to enter the program, incoming studentsmust have the equivalent of one year of collegeand a nursing assistant certification. About 70to 80 percent of Beebe School of Nursing studentscomplete the two-year, “hospital-based diploma”program. Of those, more than 90 percent earn theirRegistered Nursing certification on the first try. Manygo on to earn their bachelor’s degree in nursing inone additional year through an articulation agreementwith Wilmington University. Many start theircareers at Beebe Medical Center or another hospital,or they continue their education in a variety of fieldsopen to registered nurses.Because of the shortage of nurses in Delawareand across the nation, Beebe Medical Center plansto increase the size of the school to assure that aInstructor Tracy Bell, RN, lectures her first-year students about cancer care.steady stream of educated and qualified nurses areprepared and ready to meet the growing demand fortheir skills.“The need is definitely there,” Mrs. Bushey says. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Serviceshas predicted a shortage of one million nurses by2010. Delaware has reported that there was an11 percent shortage of nurses in 2000 and that theshortage could grow to more than 50 percent withinthe next 12 years.“I never realized how much you can do as anurse,” says Shauna, who already has begun tofocus on a geriatric field because she would liketo be working with older people. She has workedin a nursing home as an activities assistant and hasenjoyed bringing laughter and happiness to thosearound her.“I grew up in a family of nurses. My mothergraduated from Beebe,” Shauna says. “I’ve heardabout nursing my whole life.”Sarah Lenderman, 22, moved to Milton fromHockessin, near Wilmington, to study at BeebeSchool of Nursing. She has worked for three and ahalf years as a patient care technician at the NewarkSarah Lenderman studies askeleton to understand moreabout back pain. Her instructoris Ginny Rickards, RN, MEd, CCRN.5

Stewart Pryor, assisted by instructor Joy Bartell, MSN, RN, CNE, learns how touse the defibrillator on the crash cart.“The program is really gearedto make you learn.”Andrew TullBeebe School of Nursing StudentEmergency Center, and she still picks up shifts there for extra money.“I have a critical care personality,” she says. “I have the ability to stay calm insituations. When I graduate, I would like to work in the Emergency Departmentat Christiana Hospital, in Newark.”Sarah says she applied to Beebe School of Nursing because it is the onlydiploma school in Delaware.“My mother is a nurse, and she also went to a diploma school. She wantedme to receive the same quality ‘hands-on’ experience that she did,” Sarah says, explaining that her mother said it would give her the skills and understandingshe would need when she began her nursing career.Sarah, an animal lover and dog owner, has, in her spare time, enjoyed helpingcritically ill puppies as a volunteer for the Delaware Puppy Rescue.Millville resident Stewart Pryor, 23, still works as a firefighter with Lewes FireDepartment while he is attending Beebe School of Nursing. He also serves as anemergency medical technician (EMT) with the department. He says he likes thechallenges of critical care.“I like the complexity, of not having two days the same,” he says of his workwith the fire department. “Someone will have a massive MI [heart attack] andyou’ll have to act quickly. You have to cut people out of a vehicle they may havebeen pinned in. At the end of the day, you feel as if you did something to helpsomeone in their time of need.”As an EMT, Stewart assists paramedics in such medical actions as giving thepatient oxygen, or giving an injection that administers epinephrine—an emergencytreatment for severe allergic reactions. As a nurse, he would work closelywith patients, learn more details about their medical conditions, and make adifference in their recovery.“I like to help people,” he says, “and I’m really interested in critical caremedicine.”Mrs. Bushey saysthat about two-thirds ofthe students bring lifeexperiences with them.“I’d say only about onethirdof our studentsonly have their highschool experience anda year of college.”Another experiencedstudent is Long Neck residentAndrew Tull, 25. Hewas an EMT in MarylandStudents Sarah Lenderman and Stewart Pryor appreciate being able to use thelibrary at Beebe School of Nursing twenty-four hours a day.6

for three years before moving to Delaware, and hehas been a phlebotomist with Beebe Medical Centerfor six years. He was one of the first to work at theBeebe Health Campus when it opened in 2004.“I always wanted to be a nurse,” he says. “I’minterested in working in the operating room.”As a phlebotomist, Andrew gets to interact withpatients when he takes their blood. He says heenjoys getting to know them, often seeing the samepeople again and again when they return for additionaltests.“I’ve always liked helping people,” he says, adding that he enjoys studying at Beebe School ofNursing. The faculty is supportive, and the library isopen 24 hours a day, which allows students to haveaccess to excellent data bases at all times. “The programis really geared to make you learn.”Mrs. Bushey says that the program also exposesstudents to healthcare in outpatient facilities and inphysician offices. Students, for example, will spenda day or two with an orthopaedic surgeon, a neurologist,or an OB/GYN.“They want us to be the best that we can be,”says Shauna, who notes the camaraderie that existsat school between the students and the faculty. “Theyare more than willing to help. Nursing is definitelyteamwork.”Shauna also stresses that the pharmacists atBeebe Medical Center point the students in the rightdirection when they need to find information withinthe complex world of medications. The teamworkdoes not end once the nurses graduate. Those whostart their career at Beebe Medical Center becomepart of a “preceptorship” program in which eachnew nurse works under the wing of a seasonednurse for about four months, all the while gettingto know the other members of the team. The goal of the program, says Mrs. Bushey,is high-quality, safe patient care—and thoroughpreparation for whatever the future may hold. nAPPLICATION PROCEDUREBeebe School of Nursing admits qualified students contingent upon successfulcompletion of the prerequisite college courses and a Nursing Assistantcourse. “We used to average 80 births a month. Now we’re going over the 100 mark.”Beverly Turney, RNC-OB, interim Nurse Manager of the Women’s Health PavilionThe Women’s Health Pavilion also cares forwomen who have undergone surgery and treatmentfor illnesses and diseases of the female reproductivesystem. Although Beebe Medical Center plans toexpand the Women’s Health Pavilion, there havebeen days when the expansion could not come soonenough. But while the unit does get “very busy attimes,” Ms. Turney emphasizes that the dedication, commitment, and camaraderie of the staff is neverin doubt.“We are a close-knit group,” she says. “And Ibelieve we have some of the best nurses in thehospital.”The Gays certainly think so. Mrs. Gay nominatedfour of the registered nurses who took care ofher—Patti Hall, RN; Cathy Barber, RN; ValerieGilbert, RN; and Nicole Hall, RN—with “Catch MeBeaming” awards, Beebe Medical Center’s versionof a customer service award that is customer nominated.Mrs. Gay also said that she enjoyed having amidwife deliver her baby. “Sally Ruby delivered Luke, and I asked that she deliver my third baby, too.”Midwives play an important role, says Steven D.Berlin, MD, Chief of Obstetrics/Gynecology at BeebeMedical Center. Dr. Berlin is a member of BaysideHealth Association, Chtd., where there are three midwivesand four obstetricians/gynecologists. Midwivessee patients in the practice, spend time with themothers when they are in labor, and deliver babies. However, there is always a physician ready to backup the midwife, if necessary.Nancy Hastings, RN, IBCLC, lactation specialist, instructs new mothers in howto hold and breastfeed their babies.“Many women prefer to have a midwife delivertheir baby,” he says, adding that babies are deliveredby obstetricians/gynecologists from Bayside HealthAssociation and from DELMED Health, also in Lewes.Beebe Medical Center also has an active lactationprogram staffed by two International Board CertifiedLactation Consultants (IBCLC). Nancy Hastings, RN,IBCLC, who has worked as a nurse for more than27 years in the Women’s Health Pavilion, is the fulltimelactation consultant. Meta Sharp-Franz, RNC,IBCLC, with more than 24 years in the Women’sHealth Pavilion, also splits her role as a nurse in theunit and as a lactation consultant. These two nursessupport new mothers in their efforts to breastfeedtheir babies, as well as in their efforts to take careof their daily needs. nBethany and Eric Gay were pleasedwith the care they received whenthey had two of their three childrenat Beebe Medical Center. They arepictured with their children, Hailey,Luke, and newborn Payton.9

EndowmentYour Giving Makes the DifferenceAlex Sydnor, Executive Director ofthe Beebe FoundationAdvancements in medical technologies have improved thequality of our lives. They have made many surgeries lessinvasive, allowing us to return home the very day of oursurgery. They have improved our ability to diagnose andtreat illnesses. New drugs have helped us control suchcommon diseases as diabetes and high blood pressure.Research and clinical trials have brought us innovationsin cancer treatment that, in turn, have given new hope topatients. But these advancements have come with a steepprice tag, adding incredibly high costs to quality healthcare. These increased costs come as both the federal governmentand private insurers cut back on what they willpay for healthcare. The Boards of Directors of Beebe Medical Foundationand Beebe Medical Center, recognizing the importanceof bringing the latest technologies to our communities, haveendorsed a goal of growing its endowment to $20 millionby the year 2020. This money is critical to Beebe MedicalCenter’s ability to continue to invest in the equipment andfacilities that are necessary to serve our growing populations. As of June 30, 2008, the Foundation managesendowed assets of $2.8 million that support Beebe. How Endowment WorksAn endowed gift is a donation that is maintained indefinitelyby Beebe Medical Foundation. The principal amountwill always remain intact because only a portion of thefund is used each year by Beebe Medical Center for thepurposes specified by the donor. The other portion remainsuntouched to help the endowment grow and keep pacewith inflation.“Think about the satisfaction you feel when you makea gift to support the care available at Beebe,” emphasizesGene Bookhammer, Chairman of the Beebe MedicalFoundation Board of Directors. “By establishing an endowment, you can provide support to Beebe forever.”Give a Forever GiftA donor can establish an endowment with a singledonation during his or her lifetime, by making gifts overa period of five years, or through a bequest or charitabletrust. Each donor may restrict the use of the funds to a purposethat reflects his or her values. In addition, donorshave the privilege of naming the endowment to honor afamily member, a friend, or oneself. The minimum amountneeded to create a named fund is $25,000, and gifts oflesser amounts can be added to the general endowment.“Looking to the future, I can see how a large endowmentwill be instrumental in our ability to meet the demandfor the sophisticated equipment and new facilities,” saysJeffrey M. Fried, President and CEO of Beebe MedicalCenter. “While we continue to need to fund current capitalexpansions, raising the level of our endowment is also criticalto Beebe’s ability to care for our patients in the future.”Need More Information? If you have questions about endowments or wouldlike to explore establishing a fund to support a programof the hospital you care most about, contact Alex Sydnor,Executive Director of Beebe Medical Foundation today fora confidential discussion at (302) 644-2900, or by sendinghim an e-mail message at asydnor@bbmc.org.10
