M e s s a g e F r o m T h e P r e s i d e n tSr. Jacquelyn Gusdane, SNDour alumni andstudents have freelychosen to discoverand develop theirgifts of mind andheart in leadershipand service toothers. Thismovement is core tothe NDCL experience!Without a doubt, fall is exquisite in its breathtakingbeauty on the NDCL campus. Visitors and parentsoften find it difficult to capture in words but they knowin their hearts that they have touched the artistryof our God. A senior boy said to me, “Sister, you justcan’t describe the experience!” This comment onlyconfirms for me that our students do not miss much– we may think they do – but they don’t. They notice, question, suggest, challenge and take action becausethey are a part of an exciting community with endlessopportunities. In our 760 young men and women, ourmission is alive and visible. This community is rooted in the alumni from NotreDame Academy and Cathedral Latin School whotreasured Catholic education and cherished theChristian values instilled in them. Their passion forbuilding a community of faith and learning is ourblessing today. This lasting legacy comes to life in theunsolicited comments I heard a few days ago, “I loveNDCL!” “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”My deepest hope for our students is that for each theNDCL experience will be a lifetime experience whereby,as transforming leaders in our world, they can live thetruth in love as Jesus did. This past June we celebratedNDCL’s 20th Commencement. We now count 3600men and women as NDCL alumni. In March, 1988when NDA and CL became NDCL, who would haveimagined such growth? We are at a new turning point, in July NDCL’s second fiveyear strategic plan, Transforming Lives ~ Changing theWorld, 2010 -2015, was approved by our Board. Thefocus is clear and the direction is known as we worktoward our vision. Let yourself enter into the NDCLexperience as you read about the involvement andoutreach of our students, alumni, faculty, and Board. Each in his or her own way has discovered ways todevelop and share their gifts of mind and heart inleadership and service to others. The young men and women of NDCL notice usand seek the witness of our deep faith in God,our goodness, and generosity. I trust that allof us want Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Schoolto move forward into the future with hope andconfidence. We, as a Catholic school community, depend on you to support and sustain us. Whatgreater gift can you give?Know you are always welcome at NDCL. Onceyou experience NDCL, you too will echo thewords of one of our students who, in simplicityand sincerity, said to me a month ago, “I am sograteful to be a Lion!”Sr. Jacquelyn visits classrooms in Japan this summer withthe Japan-U.S. Teacher Exchange Program for Educationfor Sustainable Development (ESD). Administered byFulbright Japan, its purpose was to raise awareness ofESD-oriented school programs, enhance ESD-relatedcurricula in both countries and deepen a sense of globalinterconnectedness and cooperation between teachers inJapan and the United States.TransformingLives ~Changingthe WorldNDCL’s NewStrategic PlanSets Five-YearCourseFor three months, 14 members of the NDCL community wereentrusted with designing and developing a new strategic plan.Representation from all NDCL constituencies—administration, families, alumni and community—ensured a balancedapproach to planning for the school’s future. The strategicplanning committee chose Transforming Lives ~ Changing theWorld as the plan theme.“NDCL is all about educating young students and preparingour Catholic leaders for tomorrow,” says Bruce Jarosz, chairperson of NDCL’s Board of Directors, strategic planningcommittee member, and chief financial officer and vicepresident of operations for MF Cachat Company,Lakewood. “Our hope is that our students will beleaders who go out intotheir communities andmake a real impact.”Your TurnThanks, Sister Jacquelyn. Keven Krajnak’s generous assistance, the hospitality of everyone connected with theschool, and especially your presence at our events, made us all feel like we had come home to a setting aswelcome and familiar as if we had been meeting on East 107th St.! It is my regret that we did not expose our CLSclassmates to the NDCL experience years ago, because everyone I talked with was impressed with how true NDCLhas been to the spirit and values of CLS. I can assure you that my vote will be to have all of our future reunionslocated on the campus of our alma mater – NDCL.With gratitude,Bob Valerian ‘60 Notre Dame - Cathedral Latin Seasons Fall 2010 2Notre Dame - Cathedral Latin Seasons Fall 2010 3
