ming xian (cindy) linHelping People Voteon September 24th, 2010, I worked at a public school as a Chinese interpreter. My responsibilities consisted of helping non-English-speaking votersby translating information provided by the other poll workers, translating theballot, accompanying the voter while he or she used the private booth, BMD,scanner, and so on.At 4 p.m., a woman who is an inspector and sat at a table called me andpointed in my direction. “Hi. Can you help this old man?” she asked me.“What kind of language does he speak?” I asked, and she did not answerme. Then my sight transferred to that man. He must have been in his 80s. He wasof medium height, but thin; he had thin hair and a little hunchback. I walked tohim and asked, “Do you need any help? I am a Chinese interpreter. I can speakChinese and English.”He looked at me in confusion and did not answer my questions, so Iraised my voice a little, but he made no reply. Then he caught my voice a littleas I raised my voice from time to time, and he nodded slowly and pointed to hisears. He was wearing audiphones in both ears.“Oh yes, I see,” I answered him. He had a problem hearing, so I talked closeto his ears. I accompanied him to a private booth and gave him a pen and a magnifyingglass. Then I taught him how to vote. First, I made a sample of the scannable paperballot. “Fill this out. Please do it according to thismethod,” I said.“Yes, I understand. Thank you,” he said.Afterward, I accompanied him to ascanner and handed his voter card to an inspectorat the scanner. Then I held his hands steady, andhe handed me his marked ballot to insert into the scanner to cast his vote.“I did it. I did it. Thank you very much, young lady! Can I talk to you?” Heheld my hand and waited for my answer.‘You can speakEnglish and canhelp Americans.’Finding Encouragement101ming xian (cindy) lin

I was born in the U.S.A. and my parents were born in the U.S.A.,too. But I went to China during World War II. I am a veteran, 89 years old. I havetwo children. My son lives in Manhattan, and my daughter lives upstate. I canspeak a little Chinese, but it’s difficult for me. You can speak English and canhelp Americans. Thank you again; I am very happy today.”“Is she your girlfriend?” The inspector inserted these words.I ignored her interruption. The man told her, “I have gotten very good service, and she speaksEnglish very well, and she can help our Americans.”I blushed with embarrassment because of his compliment. This is Ming Xian (Cindy) Lin’s third publication in the Literacy Review. “I wasborn in China. As a child, I endured the famine; and as an adolescent, I wasforced to farm in an area with no electricity, gas, water, and not enough food.”After immigrating to New York, “I worked very hard in garment factories.Today, I study at the University Settlement Society’s Family Literacy Program.Michael Hunter is the director. The classes have helped me a lot.”
