Diego lasluisadToSee My Father Againreams are definitely a part of our lives, the same as happiness and sadness. We need to understand that these kinds of feelings are the essence of ourlives. Some days, I just feel how beautiful life can be because I have the fortune ofsharing a new day with my loved ones, and I have the opportunity of showing thepeople I take care of that I can count on them, too.It is wonderful how you can fill your soul, your heart, your life itself, withsimple things. Every time I go to the park with my family for a walk, we do notneed words to communicate because I can feel their souls, and they can feel mine.It is because I can understand the desires, hopes and dreams for the future of mywife and my two daughters, and they can also guess my dreams.I still remember that beautiful time, my childhood. Since I grew up withonly the affection and kindness of my father, we came to be not only father andson; we came to be great friends. We used to take long walks, just my father andI. We talked about everything, and most of the time we talked without words, exactly the same way I do now with my daughters. We talked and thought abouteverything, but we never talked about a separation—living far away from eachother, in different countries.Unfortunately, life wanted me to be separated from my father. Twelveyears have passed. My father is 75 years old. Sometimes I think that the charactersin this story have been changed. My father has become my son, and I have becomethe father. My father often does not understand reasons; he is sometimes just likea child. He wants me to come back home, come back close to him, and take thoselong walks again, just he and I, as in the old times.I still remember the day he told me,“Son, I am waiting for you. I justhope that when you decide to comeback, it will not be too late.” It wasHe wants me tocomeBACK home, comeBACK close to him.Being Together79diego lasluisa
the moment when I felt the deepest sadness in my heart. How could he have saidsuch a thing? My father has definitely become a child, and I have to take care ofhim.Unfortunately, I cannot go back to my country because, as with millionsof immigrants, I am still waiting for my American dream of getting a GreenCard. Then I will be able to realize my dream for the future—and have one moreopportunity to see my father again and have a long walk with him, talking in thelanguage of our hearts.diego lasluisa Being Together80Diego Lasluisa was born in Ecuador and has lived in New York for 10 years.
