In section 1I discuss a necessary precursor to understanding ESP, the complexities of language andlanguage learning. In section 2 I outline the nature of ESP. Then, in section 3,1 state thebenefits of ESP courses. In section 4 I state the defects of two common sources of ESPtraining and finally, in section 5, I rut forward suggestions as to the way in which ESPcourses produce the maximum benefit.
