The firstlevel deals with the basic physical abilities a goalkeeper shouldpossess and develop and includes drills to practice them. Thesecond level includes the individual technical skills based onthe physical abilities introduced on the first level, for examplemoving and throwing. The third level is based on game play and developing gamesense. On the third level the goalkeeper should be taught tothink and see game situations in order to act accordinglybased on the skills learned on the two previous levels.Skill development in all levels aims for activegoaltending and a better game knowledge.Level 1; Physical abilitiesThe most important physical abilities the goalkeeper possessesare body control, the reaction speed, muscle endurancein association with aerobic endurance, and eye-handcoordination.All the abilities should be practiced and the coach shouldencourage the goalkeepers to do so independently. One wayto motivate the goalkeeper is to create an individual practiceplan. Usually there is no time during the team practice sessionto give consistent feedback to the goalkeeper so privatelessons occasionally is a good way to emphasise the importanceof the goalkeepers. Within these sessions the coachmight include field players that have to practice shooting.►21
