irds were located at other points along the Blue RidgeParkway, on the Cheoah Ranger District of NantahalahNational Forest, and on White Oak and Warrior Mountainsin Polk County. Only 3 birds were located in GreatSmoky Mountains National Park. Finally, recent surveysalong the Roanoke River revealed 7 CeruleanWarblers.Of 27 sites reporting habitat data, 13 (50%) were classifiedas dry slope, while 9 (33%) were in riparian areas.Of the 75 Ceruleans reported from these 27 sites,53 (71%) were in dry slope habitats, and 11 birds eachwere in riparian and cove forest habitats (Figure 24).Upland sites along the Blue Ridge were dominatedby oaks (white oak, scarlet oak, chestnut oak), hickories,and tulip tree, whereas riparian forests where Ceruleansoccur along the Roanoke River were dominated bysycamore, cottonwood, and green ash (Figure 25).Table 14. OhioHamel (2000) reports the following breeding birdatlas information for Ohio: “Peterjohn and Rice (1991)relate the occurrence and abundance of cerulean warblersin Ohio to the occurrence and abundance of hardwoodforests. The birds occurred on 51% of priorityblocks statewide. They were very frequent in physiographicareas of the state with relatively large amountsof forest, e.g. 67-89% of blocks in the different portionsof the Allegheny Plateau. In the heavily farmed Till andLake Plain regions, they were encountered in only 21-24% of blocks.” CEWAP surveys were concentratedmainly in the northeast and southeast portions of the state.CEWAP surveys produced 264 Ceruleans at 62 (79%)of 78 sites visited (Map 24).
