Food bestpracticeSouth American fruits refrigeratedand earthquake-proofSouth American fruit producer Ditzler Chile Ltda. has put itsnew, partially automated mobile pallet racking system intooperation. The project was characterised by requirementsfor earthquake safety.“The project met my expectationsin every respect.Even under the more difficultconditions imposed by theearthquake safety requirements,I was able to rely fullyon the expertise and cooperativenessof SSI Schaefer”, accordingto Bruno Ditzler, ownerof Louis Ditzler AG.Ditzler Chile Ltda. is a subsidiary ofLouis Ditzler AG, based in Möhlin, Switzerland. The South American firm’s corebusiness is the production of fruit, whichis supplied to major distributors and retailchains.Between February 2010 and January2011 alone, Chile suffered two severeearthquakes and several quakes ofmore moderate intensity. The governmentimposes very high standards ofearthquake-proof building. Individualsare held personally responsible if anydefects are found. To avoid this, all newbuildings – including warehouses andracking systems – are inspected by specialistsin line with strict structural engineeringguidelines.SSI Schaefer already had a proven trackrecord in constructing earthquake-proofprojects in Chile, some of which havealready been tested in real life. For thisreason, the South American fruit produceralso opted to place the contract for apartially automated mobile pallet rackingsystem with the intralogistics specialist. To implement the solution, the expertsat SSI Schaefer refined their earthquakeproofdesign to create new, optimisedstandards for mobile racking systems inearthquake zones. Thanks to a modularwarehouse technology concept, the solutionis scalable according to the earthquakerisk. The new refrigerated facility for the Chileanfruit producer now far exceeds thestandards in terms of earthquake safety. The 10,000 pallet spaces in the mobileracking system are split into two semiautomatedsystems, with 16 and 17 double-facemobile bases respectively. Thecompany’s own produce only fills about10 % of the capacity of the new mobileracking system. However, the extra capacitywas built in for a reason. Ditzlermakes the remaining 9,000 industrialpallet spaces available to other companiesin the industry as a warehouselogistics provider, thus opening up an additionalline of business.New traditions in old barrelsFor pleasure that indulges all the senses, Birkenhof Brennereiin Nistertal has constructed a new warehouse. The result is a system that can be used to mature thewhisky in wooden barrels for several yearsuntil it reaches its full flavour. For over 160 years, the Birkenhof familyhas dedicated itself with passion andtradition to the production of high-qualityschnapps and liquors. With the courageand willingness to take risks, the distilleryhas been following a new path since2007: whisky production. The companynow plans to expand this third productsector even further.“To achieve our goals we need a new, secure warehouse where the whisky canacquire its full flavour”, outlines SteffiKlöckner, Managing Director at Birkenhof-Brennerei.The contract was awardedto SSI Schaefer, Neunkirchen.Maturing time is the key quality featurehere. This meant that the task was notfocused on rapid storage and retrievalprocesses, but rather to find the idealsolution for storing a product that isnot moved for a considerable time. Italso needs to allow for expansion of thewarehouse over the decades. Anotherkey point is that every wooden barrel isunique in terms of size, shape and surface. This meant that fixed storage locationswere not feasible. Flexibility wasthe order of the day in the mixed storagefacility.Since December 2010, Fading Hill whiskyhas been maturing in a new 100 m²warehouse in 100 traditional sherry barrels– in PR 350 pallet racking. Barrelsof many different sizes and weighing between100 – 500 kg were placed directlyonto wooden blocks located on crossrailshere. The storage locations are assignedflexibly as required. Each year, between30 and 40 new barrels are added. Thereis space for up to 400 medium-sized containers. With the new pallet racking, SSI Schaeferhas created a timeless storage facilitywhere each whisky can mature in peaceunder the ideal conditions. “The storagein wooden barrels is perfect. Thanks tothe new system, with its customised designand uncommon use, we have successfullyformed the basis for furthergrowth”, summarized Steffi Klöckner.Refrigerated seafood storageSSI Schaefer in Thailand was selectedby Okeanos Food Co., Ltd to designand install the new storage systems forOkeanos’ latest cold room facilities inThailand.Okeanos Food Co., Ltd, a subsidiary ofPakfood, is one of Thailand’s largest providersof seafood and ready meals. More than 16,000pallet locations of Schaefer mobile rackingsystem, drive-in system and interlockselective pallet racking system were installedin the warehouse.Over the past 13 months, SSI Schaeferhas worked closely with Okeanos to providethe best storage design for the newsolution. Based on the preliminary budgetand high demand for space utilisation, warehouse analyses were carried out ona regular basis for promptly identifying thedifferent types of storage solutions to fitOkeanos’ various product profiles. Thenew storage room will increase the warehouseefficiency for Okeanos with the featuresof high selectivity and accessibility.17

And itdoes this in the smallest of spaces.Storage lifts based on the vertical principleare an ideal solution whereverflexibility and optimum use of the availablewarehouse space are paramount.SSI Schaefer‘s LogiMat® is a systemrequiring just 1/10 of the storage areaof a conventional static storage. The automaticstorage system uses the simplegoods-to-man principle and cuts traveltimes by more than 70 %. It also increasesthe speed of order picking six- to tenfoldby automating the process. In principle, the storage lift is similar toan oversized drawer cabinet with tworows of trays; one in the front, and onein the back. Between these rows is alift. This lift travels the whole height ofthe automatic storage system to removethe individual trays from their respectivepositions and to deliver them to the operatingwindow. The items required aredisplayed via a touch-screen and logical,user-friendly operating interface. Thewarehouse management system transfersthe orders directly to the storagelift where the respective trays of itemsare controlled and moved to the operatingwindow. The warehouse staff thenremoves the goods required at an ergonomicheight. The LogiMat® is extremely flexible andcan be adapted to any individual requirementbecause of its modular structure. There are no restrictions on how thesystem is installed; it can feature separatereplenishment and picking sides, replenishment on both sides or pickingone floor up, can be installed in thebasement or over two floors, as a systempenetrating the roof, countersunk in thefloor or attached with a casing construction. For example, it can be installed asa single storage lift or if required canbe easily combined with other deviceswhich are simply controlled by a warehousemanagement system. Each pickingwindow also has a very user-friendlymultifunction touch-screen and can beoperated autonomously.SSI Schaefertakes overHandler A/SSSI Schaefer takes over Handler A/S(Humlebæk/DK) and thus adds to theproduct portfolio with the importantstorage lift segment. An initial project for joinery and carpentryFrom the end of 2011, a new, automatichigh bay pallet storage system fromSSI Schaefer, Neunkirchen will be providingefficient, space-saving goods storageat Rudolf Ostermann GmbH, Bocholt. The expanding wholesaler for carpentrysupplies is the European leader in mailorder joinery supplies and fittings withover 1,000 orders per day. The ever-growingrange also includes tools and machinery, design elements and installation andassembly articles. To increase stock reliability and shortendelivery times, Ostermann decidedin March 2011 to purchase a futureoriented, flexible storage solution fromSSI Schaefer. A key feature for the wholesaler, aside from the price/performanceratio, was the necessary experience andexpertise in providing consulting on SAPsolutions as well as implementing them.To store and pick semi-finished and finishedgoods, the Siegerland-based intralogisticsspecialist is currently implementingthe associated automatic highbay pallet racking system in a silo designwith 10,000 pallet storage spaces foreuro/industrial pallets and mesh boxes. The complete material flow control andwarehouse management system will beimplemented later on in SAP WM/TRM.The complete integration into the existingSAP landscape at Ostermann also savesthe customer additional interfaces andthe hassle of modifying them when processeschange. Performance and availabilityhave also been improved. Two Schaefer Compact Crane storageand retrieval systems with a constructionheight of approx. 24 m will in the futureperform goods storage and retrieval operations. The products are transportedvia pallet conveyor technology. Theorganisation relies on donations fromthe public to carry out its projects.SSI Schaefer has provided essentialfunding for a mobile exhibition on theEACH project for the Enham AlameinCommunity.Jaap Vos, Director, SSI Schaefer, England:“We are proud to support Enham –it is crucial that local businesses getinvolved in local charities that benefitthe wider community. The EACH Projectexhibition is full of invaluable informationabout how the charity started, whoit benefits and how others can get involved.I hope that this will encouragemore people to volunteer for projectssuch as these.”With the SMC we areincreasing yourEfficiencyNew products for theSchaefer Miniload Crane familySSI Schaefer is adding two new storage and retrieval devices to its range ofSchaefer Miniload Cranes (SMC) in the form of compact twin-mast devices.Newly developed drive technology enables fast, vibration-dampened transportof loads weighing up to 300 kg at heights of up to 24 m.In the field of storage and retrieval systems, SSI Schaefer has added two newSchaefer Miniload Cranes for shelf servicing to its product portfolio for shelf automationsolutions for containers, boxes and trays. In addition to the single-maststorage and retrieval system, the equipment range is being expanded with SMC2 and SMC 2 XL with two compact twin-mast storage and retrieval systems. Inresponse to market requirements, this move extends the flexible constructionconcept of SMC machines into dynamic processes for higher loads. Based onthe two new systems, the shelf servicing devices for automatic small parts warehouseswill be able to use a closed lifting trolley to hold two standard or one largepiece of load-carrying equipment or to be moved by two independent lifting trolleysor pieces of load-carrying equipment; all this can be done at access heightsof up to 12 m or 24 m. This results in high payloads and greater throughput.Irrespective of their different features, all models in the SMC family of devicesare designed using the modular principle. As in the first series, the SchaeferMiniload Cranes of the SMC 2 series offer impressive and extremely stablemasts and optimum use of space due to their low clearances. A special productionprocess lends them a very high resistance torque in spite of their lowinherent weight. For example, the twin-mast variant can move up to 300 kg inthe automatic small parts warehouse with closed load-carrying equipment. Theon-board control cabinet is an eye-catching and significant external feature ofthe SMC family and is found in the SMC 2 variants as well. A recessed grooveallows the control cabinet to be perfectly integrated into the device without takingup too much space. This particular design feature also prevents the mastfrom vibrating and perfectly guides the forces introduced to the chassis.High quality, tried and tested machine elements produced inhouse ensure easy, low maintenance as well as longevity. These components are highly standardisedboth in terms of design and production resulting in quick availability, shortassembly and start-up times.InbriefProduct-/CompanynewsLogistica in OsloIn 2011 the SSI Schaefer Logistica washeld for the first time in Oslo, Norway, with over 80 Norwegian companies.Talks, reference projects, site visits, professional networking and dialoguescovered the latest discoveries in manual,semi-automatic and fully automaticwarehouse logistics. The 2-day seminar, which took placeat Scandic Oslo Airport, was aimed inparticular at smaller and medium-sizedcompanies.The delegates asked specific questionsthat were addressed with professionaland inspiring responses.
