December 2003Newsletter DateCOMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAMThe ResponderHappy Holidays to one and to all. I have to admit we throw one heck of a party! Forthose of you that attended this year’s Award and Holiday party it was a big success. Itwas great seeing so many CERT members at the event with great food, great company, and a great band. Frank Correggio’s, “The Reunion Band”, kept the party goingwell after our original stopping time. Thanks to Murray and his staff at the countryclub for letting us stay late to enjoy the festivities. Thank you to everyone thatbrought baked goods to Open House, the money earned helped pay for the wonderfulentertainment. Did everyone enjoy the handmade white chocolate snowmen? Thosewere a gift from Amy Ross’ kitchen. The CERT program is going strong thanks to the commitment by all of you. Ourteam leaders are working hard to keep things coordinated and next year we will behaving additional meetings for individual teams and continuing education to keep usup to date on preparedness and response issues. Your surveys show that we still havesome work to do on clarifying where your designated meeting spot is located. If youcan only attend one or two meetings a year, please try to attend the “ALL TEAMMEMBER” meetings at T-Rex. This is where we update phone lists, team boundaries, etc.Continue to read your newsletters for information on upcoming classes, continuingeducation, and activities. We hope to see all of you at an event next year. Enjoy yourholidays and may the sugarplum fairy dust your dreams with magic.Cindy MetcalfPhotos Courtesy of Jay Bell

Submitted by: Frank CorreggioAs I sit here and write this I am thinking aboutmany things. First, all the preparation that went intoputting this together. From the planning to the securingthe location to sitting in the Chief’s officeand feeling somewhat relieved when he said, “OK.”I was thinking about when Cindy asked me if myband wanted to play. She knew that I played butnever heard me with these 3 new guys, Larry, Steveand Chris. I was a little nervous when I said yes, hoping that Cindy, when it was all done, would behappy. I thought about arranging the menu and howwe tried to make sure we had the right combinationof things. How hard we worked on the awards anddecorations. How hard all that were involved worked to make sure everything went right. But most of all, what I think about is meeting and greeting our CERT members, their spouse’s, or significant others.Shaking hands, giving hugs and even managing to collect a few kisses in the process. I look back to see holiday attire, fancy clothes and funny HAT”S. Even Santa’s reindeer helpersmanaged to slip away to join it the holiday festivities. I think aboutseeing the 146 smiling faces of the men and women who took the timeout of their busy holiday routine to come and join their teammates. To talk and laugh, see old friends and meet make new friends. To reflecton what was, and to look ahead on what is to come. That is whatI am thinking about. That is CERT. With Sympathy …Our condolences and deepest sympathies go out to the family of MichaelBarry.Michael graduated the Boca CERT program in May 2002. Michael was anavid supporter of the CERT program and emergency preparedness.Thank you Michael for being involved with Boca Raton CERT and yourcommunity. You will be missed.Have you every spent an afternoon exploring the internet for all things CERT? If so, you have probably come acrossa Boca CERT yahoo bulletin board. This bulletin board system was used as a means of communication in the infancyof the Boca CERT program. As Boca CERT is approaching adolescence, the primary means of communication isthrough the monthly newsletter, THE RESPONDER.. The Responder is also posted on the fire department web siteat www.bocafire.org. The secondary means of communication is by way of a direct email to you or a phone call.Boca CERT does not post to or use the yahoo bulletin board. If you have any questions regarding CERT communications please contact your team leader, Amy Ross or FrankCorreggio.GraduatesBack Row (l to r) : Brunella Vindigni, Lil Peltz Petow, ???,Sharon Neufeldt, Susan SosinMiddle Row (l to r) : Doug Coller, Adriana Venton,???, ???, ???, Lisa Mansell, Pat Mansell, ???, ChristineQuinnFront Row (l to r) : ??, Len Wolfer, ???, George Vindigni,Robert EchagarruaSpecial ThanksMoulage Artists : Gilles Lucas and George MaxwellVictims : Roslyn and Milt Rudolph, Bob Coveney, P.J.Mansell, Raquel Lea, Stuart Oskins, Dave NeuweilerDECEMBER 2003 Page 5

By Frank CorreggioThe 33 rd Annual Holiday Parade went off without a hitch. During the day everyone was wondering if the paradewould happen. If you remember it was raining. It was a miserable day. Cold and damp. But as luck would have it,the clouds broke, the rain stopped and all was well.CERT team members met at Fire Station #1 for instructions and were then taken by van to the command vehicle SU-65 at SE 8 th Street and Federal Highway. Sub sandwiches, chips and a beverage and we were ready for deployment.Ron Diego, Dennis Jordan and Wes Adams handled NET Control from SU-65. The parade route was divided Eastand West by Federal Highway, and broken down into 14 zones, 7 on each side.Don Campbell, Hank Vansant, Clem Storch, Debra White, Fred Fuhrmann, Patrick Devlin, Thomas Kelly, Joe White,John Melcher and Rick and Sandy Haradon handled the sections south of Palmetto Park Road. Mike Teller, Joyceand Susan Brennan, Fred and Lisa Kleber, Barbara Kasser, Leslie Kastner, Frank Ettinger and John Vansant took careof the sections north of Palmetto Park Road.CERT team members handled 3 incidents, one requiring police intervention. The highlight of the evening was whenBarbara Kasser’s radio would not work. That’s when CERT thinking and NET Control expertise really sprang intoaction. At that exact time the American Radio Relay League was formed. Team members on the west side were instructedby NET Control to move to the south end of their zone. They were to pick up a radio and walk to the northend of their zone and pass it to the next team member. This was repeated until it reached Barbara Kasser. Once shereceived the radio she was instructed to walk across to the west side and hand the broken radio to team members whowere waiting at the north end of their zones. The same task was preformed until the radio reached NET Control whereRon looked it. Great thinking guys. “ Adapt and Overcome”.The holiday parade is a great way to get out, meet with old friends and meet some new ones. It’s a great way for thenot so familiar radio operators to meet the “BIG GUNS” of amateur radio and learn. This is great way to become familiarwith your radio and feel comfortable talking on it. Its another way that CERT works with the fire departmentin helping the community. Thanks CERT and thank all of you for your time and dedication.I wish all of you a safe and happy holiday season.Who is my team leader? Where are my primary and secondary meeting places? Any special needs in my zone? How do I contact my team leader? These are common questions asked by our membership. In pages seven to fifteen(7 to 15), we have attempted to answer some of these questions. In 2003 Boca CERT has expanded the number ofzones, with boundary changes, and has welcomed new team leaders and co-leaders.The format is the basic disaster plan which all teams should have developed. If there is missing information, youshould contact your team leader. Many teams are in the process of planning a team meeting so this information willbe provided then. For your team to be successful, please participate, support, and acknowledge your team leaders efforts.Team leaders, if there are any changes, updates, or additions to the plans as printed, please notify Amy Ross.DECEMBER 2003 Page 6
