As a matter of fact, the word "the world" is repeated seventy timesin the Holy Book and the audience is addressed as, “Oh People!” ratherthan, “Oh Muslims!”10
I. Introduction“Without religion there can be no true morality; withoutmorality there can be no true religion.” TalmudModeration is an old yet neglected virtue; similarly, wasatia[moderation and centrism] is an essential yet ignored Islamic doctrine.The purpose of this book is to shed light on this important conceptparticularly as adopted in Islam. The wasatia ideology is based onreligious moderate teachings and heritage. Its ideologues are driven bya moderate centrist vision affirmed in religious thought and practice.The approach raises the questions: Who speaks for Islam? From whichvintage point can we consider moderation and immoderation in Islam?How can we define what moderation and immoderation amount to inIslam? By what standard can we identify and judge moderate andextremist Islamic states? Can Wasatia address effectively the needs anddemands of people under colonial occupation and siege? What is theshape of the future that Wasatia promises in Palestine? Would Wasatiaideology and thought provide the inspiration to lead a real renaissancebased on religion? What are the future prospects for Islamic moderateforces such as Wasatia in Palestine and elsewhere?Wasatia compelling answers to all these questions have beenlargely ignored in the West. In searching for answers, “The Holy Quranis the marja’iya [reference guide]” and “al-ijtihad [independentrational reasoning] is the method.” The Quran remains the treasurehouse from which all the ideas expressed in this book are derived.11
