D. the Muslims under Second Caliph Omar Ben al-Khatab conquered Jerusalem and the Caliph offered theinhabitants of the city safety in what became known as theOmarite Covenant. The question raised since then is: Did CaliphOmar allow the Jews to return and reside in the Holy City orstipulated in his Covenant that no Jew would reside in the city?are different and conflicting narratives regarding the terms oftruce for Jerusalem as signed between the Muslims and Christians,particularly in comparing the earlier versions of the OmariteCovenant with later versions. The original version of the OmariteCovenant did not mention the Jews in the text. However, laterversions stipulate that ‘No Jew shall reside in Alia (Jerusalem.”The Arab historian al-Yacoubi was the first to record the text ofthe covenant but it was a later Arab historian Sayf bin Omar whomentioned the additional text stipulating that no Jew would live withthe Christians in Jerusalem.
