built in 2007-2008 to be fully operational during 2008-2009 by Tehnomont<br />

Pula shipyard <strong>for</strong> Solin-Croatia-based BFT fishing operator Conex-Trade.<br />

SARDINA I, having been built in 2007 to be fully operational during 2008.<br />

o Spain: Four large BFT PS vessels (LOAs = 33.10m and 49.50m) to be built <strong>for</strong><br />

Algeria, delivery 2008, two <strong>of</strong> which by Astilleros la Parilla (BV certified) <strong>for</strong> Algerian<br />

companies KBB and Albacore, sarl.<br />

o Italy: According to unconfirmed Industry reports:<br />

Six large BFT PS vessels (LOA = 38m) and six medium BFT PS vessels<br />

(LOA = 31m) to be built <strong>for</strong> Libya, delivery 2008/2009.<br />

Three EU FIFG-IFOP 25 financed large BFT PS vessels, <strong>of</strong> which one (Hull:<br />

Steel; LOA = 42m; Main engines: x 2 Guascor SF 480 TA SP 1570 Hp /<br />

1800’) to be built <strong>for</strong> delivery in 2008/2009 (see Figure 022).<br />

o Tunisia: Two large BFT PS vessels (LOA > 33.10m) having being built at Sfax<br />

shipyard Mecanav. DOB ETA May and October 2006. Delivery in time unconfirmed.<br />

Fully operational in 2008.<br />

• Detected Mediterranean PS fishing vessels with LOAs < 20m, have purposely not been<br />

included in this survey, regardless whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y were registered or not with ICCAT as<br />

authorised BFT fishing vessels.<br />

• Out <strong>of</strong> 612 detected PS fishing units, 113 vessels were not recorded with ICCAT at <strong>the</strong> time<br />

<strong>the</strong> survey was carried-out, <strong>of</strong> which:<br />

o 26 units were effectively being built at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong> survey was carried-out,<br />

o 6 units were flagged to Algeria and have positively been identified as fully<br />

operational PS fishing vessels (see Annexe 2),<br />

o 17 units were flagged to Croatia and have positively been identified as fully<br />

operational PS fishing vessels,<br />

11 PS multispecies: 28.6m LOA 20m,<br />

6 medium PS: 38.5m > LOA 28.6m.<br />

o 5 units were flagged to EU states and have positively been identified as fully<br />

operational PS fishing vessels,<br />

o 1 unit was flagged to Libya and has positively been identified as a fully operational<br />

large PS fishing vessel, inside <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean Sea during <strong>the</strong> 2007 BFT fishing<br />

season,<br />

o 8 units were flagged to Tunisia and have positively been identified as fully<br />

operational PS multispecies fishing vessels, inside <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean Sea during<br />

<strong>the</strong> 2007 BFT fishing season,<br />

o 50 units were flagged to Turkey <strong>of</strong> which:<br />

10 PS multispecies: 28.6m LOA 20m,<br />

23 medium PS: 38.5m > LOA 28.6m,<br />

17 large PS: LOA > 38.5m,<br />

25 FIFG: Financial Instrument <strong>for</strong> Fisheries Guidance. The Regulation on <strong>the</strong> Financial Instrument <strong>for</strong> Fisheries Guidance (FIFG) set out<br />

<strong>the</strong> policy priorities and <strong>the</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> assistance <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> fisheries and aquaculture sector <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> period 2000-2006. The FIFG was<br />

designed to help achieve <strong>the</strong> aims <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> common fisheries policy by providing structural assistance to streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> competitiveness<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> operating structures and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> economically viable enterprises. Council Regulation (EC) No 1263/1999 <strong>of</strong> 21 June<br />

1999 on <strong>the</strong> Financial Instrument <strong>for</strong> Fisheries Guidance. This Regulation granted FIFG support to <strong>the</strong> following in line with <strong>the</strong> FIFG's<br />

overall objectives: Fleet renewal and modernisation <strong>of</strong> fishing vessels; adjustment <strong>of</strong> fishing ef<strong>for</strong>t; joint enterprises; small-scale coastal<br />

fisheries; socio-economic measures; protection <strong>of</strong> marine resources in coastal waters; aquaculture; fishing port facilities; processing and<br />

marketing <strong>of</strong> fishery and aquaculture products; seeking new outlets <strong>for</strong> such products; operations by members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trade; innovative<br />

actions, in particular those <strong>of</strong> a transnational nature and involving <strong>the</strong> networking <strong>of</strong> operators and areas dependent on <strong>the</strong> sector.<br />
