Continued from page 1.As the challenges for our local schoolscontinue and the resources become morescarce, we continue to look for ways tosupport teachers in the classroom withfun and engaging activities for studentsthat meet California Academic Standards.Success at Taft SchoolSince 2005, Hidden Villa has had afull-time, grant funded Science EnrichmentTeacher at Taft Community Schoolin Redwood City. Using their schoolgarden in combination with hands-onscience labs and experiments, all studentsparticipate in science. According to JennyZaebst, Science Enrichment Teacher andSchool Garden Specialist, students aremore engaged as a result of this partnership.“You know a program is making animpact when students decide to spendtheir recess time in the school garden! This program compliments the in-classlearning and gets students interested andexcited about science. When theyget to 5th grade, they diveeven deeper into thescience worldThe results have beenamazing; increasedtest scores, increasedawareness of theenvironment, morestewardship, and overallgrowing interest in theworld around them!with Science Lab every week. The resultshave been amazing: increased test scores, increased awareness of the environment, more stewardship, and overall growinginterest in the world around them!”We know that student retention ismade easier by applying knowledge.“Bringing my students to Ms. Jenny’sscience lab on a weekly basis is ahighlight for me. My students havedeveloped a deep love and understandingof science because of lab,” reports onefifth grade teacher. Surveys of studentsand staff tell us that the students areresponding quite favorably to this partnershipand are changing their attitudesabout science with many now reportingthat it is their favorite subject. And whilethat excitement is what we strive for, weknow that schools areevaluated in large partby their student’sstandardized testscores. With thisin mind weare thrilledto showyou theresultsProficient/Advancedof the 2004-2010 fifth grade CaliforniaStandards Test in Science at TaftCommunity School. This bar graph notesthe marked improvement in test scoressince the inception of this partnership. The results speak for themselves, butwhat really speaks to us is seeing kidseagerly participate in learning new thingsthrough class discussions, experiments, and activities.Taft Community School FifthGrade CST Scores 2004-201050403020100Proficient/AdvancedMean scale score2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010Redwood City School Garden PartnershipsSprouting New LifeThe City of Redwood City created a setof Environmental Initiatives for bothyouth and adults to promote a healthycity and community.
