The Duveneck Experience:
A Living Legacy
Have you ever
wondered what it
would be like to
grow up at Hidden
Villa with Frank and Josephine
as your grandparents? For
David Duveneck, a current
and beloved Board member,
this was his experience,
and listening to stories from
his childhood is like being
transported through time.
Devoted advocates for
human dignity, Frank and Josephine opened their
family home to some of the most marginalized
and victimized in their community. Housing
Japanese families that had returned from
encampments, providing meeting spaces for
Cesar Chavez and the American Farm Worker
Movement, hosting Jewish Holocaust survivors,
and starting the first residential multi-racial
summer camp in the nation,
were just a few of the responses
and contributions made by the
Duvenecks’.
David has vivid memories of
these times
and shared
that the
concern for
the human
condition
displayed
by his
family, and the conviction to
act, shaped his perspectives
as a young man. This was
not remarkable to him at the
time; being with different
people from diverse backgrounds was engaging
and he liked learning about their lives.
“Hidden Villa is
responding to the
changing needs in a
way my grandparents
would be proud. The
leadership and staff
have an excellent
read on the pulse of
the community and
the vision to make a
lasting impact.”
Inspiring a just and sustainable future
through our programs, land, and legacy

STEWARDS OF THE LEGACY
Dear Friends,
Well the short days of winter are
quickly disappearing and we look
forward to the impending onset
of longer days and the return of
warmer and sunnier weather!
With summer now visible on the horizon, it’s time for us to
shift gears and embark upon the preparations for our upcoming
Summer Camp programs. Although the first day of Camp is still
a few months away (June 17th), many of this year’s sessions
filled in record time! It is a testament to the timeless value of
these programs that they have remained so popular and vital
since Josephine and Frank Duveneck first started them in 1945
and I look forward to seeing my own children return for their
6th and 10th consecutive year respectively! At the time of
writing, there are still a few spaces left for certain sessions, so
if you know of a child or teen who you feel would benefit from
our unique camp experience, please check with the Camp office
for availability.
I recently received some materials from the 1980’s about
Hidden Villa and Frank Duveneck in particular. While Frank
is often best regarded for the supportive role that he played in
the development of so many of Hidden Villa’s programs, I was
intrigued to read an interview with him from May 1983, where
he talks about his philosophy and goals in life. He ends the
interview by saying, “I hope that it (the land) can be kept the
way it is, so that you can go out at night and still see the stars. I
think I’m very fortunate that you young people are here that are
interested in keeping it that way.”
Thank you for your interest in Hidden Villa and for your
ongoing support of the work that we do. Frank and Josephine
Duveneck believed that they never really owned the lands
of Hidden Villa, but “simply held and took care of them”,
preserving them in perpetuity as a place for people to gather
to deepen their relationships with the natural world around
them and with one another. And here we are, several decades
later, continuing that legacy as we strive to fulfill our mission
to “inspire a just and sustainable future through our programs,
land and legacy.” Happy spring!
Sincerely,
Dear Hidden Villa Community,
As a Board member I feel a tremendous
responsibility to uphold the rich legacy of
the Duveneck family. Their lives provide
us with an inspiring model of what it
means to be stewards of the land and caring community
members working for equality and social justice for all
people.
Our Board is a diverse group of dedicated individuals
drawn to Hidden Villa for a variety of reasons - environmental
education, multicultural understanding,
youth development, land preservation, organic farming,
and so many more. While our specific interests and
backgrounds vary, we are all focused on furthering the
mission of inspiring a just and sustainable future so this
precious place is here for generations to come.
Our Strategic Plan guides the work of the organization.
As part of the Plan, we are evaluating our current
board structure and processes and exploring how to be
more effective. At our annual Board retreat in March, we
will consider ways to improve the Board’s governance
role, leadership and collaboration, as well as how each
of us can better connect to Hidden Villa’s programs.
Board members of this dynamic organization take our
job very seriously. We want to ensure that Hidden Villa
remains vibrant, focused on the future and on a solid
financial foundation. On behalf of the Hidden Villa
Board of Trustees, please accept my appreciation for
your generous support which enables us to keep this
amazing organization thriving well into the future.
A Living Legacy
Continued from page 1.
What stood out as unusual were the experiences he
had beyond his family home. Once, while at a friend’s
house, he remembers seeing a graphic coffee table book
that depicted WWII. It was at this time that he recalls
digesting that violence and hatred could also be a part
of the human experience. He thought how strange it was
that we would do this to one another.
Flash forward several decades, and so much has
changed. Hidden Villa, once a family home, is an
educational non-profit that serves 50,000 people annually.
While many of these folks are enjoying nature with
friends and family, the majority are here to participate in
our programs. And, while it is true that we can no longer
go door-to-door to recruit campers from surrounding
communities like Josephine did, the intention of the
Duveneck’s remain as our mission, “to inspire a just
and sustainable future through our programs, land, and
legacy.”
Change is the one constant and is often challenging.
When David Duveneck was asked why he contributed his
time, talents and treasures to the organization that was
once his family home he said, “Hidden Villa is responding
to the changing needs in a way my grandparents would
be proud. The leadership and staff have an excellent read on
the pulse of the community and the vision to make a lasting
impact.”
In the spirit of learning from one another in changing
times, Hidden Villa will be hosting our very first youth-led
conference. Working with young people from diverse
religious backgrounds, High School students are planning
and will be facilitating a panel and conversations around
faith and religion. Finding common ground and similarities
between beliefs can foster community, build empathy, and
create a greater understanding of each other.
A SPACE TO
GROW
By Kevin Collins aka Spring Mist, YOUTH DEVELOPMENT INTERN
The Summit and Everest High School students who came
to Hidden Villa this past month as part of their coursework
(called an intersession) were surprised by what
goes into running a small-scale farm and wilderness nonprofit.
They arrived in their finest summer fashions with a concrete
list of things they would and wouldn’t do, only to quickly realize
that shorts and Air Jordan’s might have been a bad choice for a
dirty day of work at the farm. This is just one example of an experiential
learning opportunity that is a key part of our Youth Development
Programs (YDP). We provide the space for young people
to experience and make the choices that work best for them.
This is a rewarding program for us
as youth workers, because we have
the opportunity to work with the same
students for a prolonged period. This
time builds relationships and growth.
The goal setting and achievement
process over time empowers young
people. This is regularly evident but
one standout example
is a student named
Julian. Julian has been
attending programs at
Hidden Villa since he
was seven, growing
through our residential
summer camp program,
and most recently as an
intersession participant
in 2011 and 2012. As a
junior preparing for the
SAT, he was unable to
join the 2013 intersession
cadre due to a
conflict with his SAT
prep class. That hurdle
did not stop Julian from finding other
ways to participate. He is volunteering
with the Agriculture and Animal
Husbandry crew in the afternoons.
He is a leader among his peers, and
it shows when he worked with the
2013 intersession students on chores
demonstrating his knowledge of the
farm and animals. He shared that
Hidden Villa gave him the confidence
“This is the type
of connection that
defines Hidden
Villa: repeat experiences
that build
upon each other
empower young
people with the
confidence to
share and make
change.”
to work alone on chores and feel
comfortable teaching others.
This is the type of connection that
defines Hidden Villa: repeat experiences
that build upon each other
empower young people with the confidence
to share and make change. This
is the ripple into the community that
continues the legacy the
Duvenecks started well
over 70 years ago. YDP
is our newest program
with diverse offerings
that engage students in
applied academics, life
skill building, restorative
justice and job skill
training. We work with a
wide range of partners
and deliver programs
that accentuate the
goals of these groups
because we believe
that for youth to thrive
they need layered and
overlapping support. The young people
we serve come from a broad range
of socioeconomic and racial backgrounds.
It is our hope and expectation
that by providing a safe space for
youth to learn-by-doing and an arena
to discuss their experience, they are
better prepared to be advocates in
their schools, communities, and the
world.
VOLUNTEER
SPOTLIGHT
We are pleased to focus our volunteer
spotlight on the BRIC Brothers,
a volunteer group of dedicated
students from Saint Francis High School in
Mountain View. BRIC stands for “Brothers
Reaching Into the Community.”
Neel Ramachandran,
the group’s
Director of Communication,
explains the
alignment of Hidden
Villa and the BRIC
Brother’s mission.
“At Hidden Villa, the
goal is to create a
just and sustainable future. Hidden Villa
places a strong emphasis on building
community, accepting and respecting
others, and working with the environment.
The BRIC Brothers strive to achieve similar
things through discussions, activities, and
community service.”
A few years ago, the BRIC Brothers first
connected with Hidden Villa when they
helped at Hidden Villa’s Halloween Haunts
event by leading families through the
fun and spooky “Haunted Trails” around
the farm. Ever since then the group has
become increasingly involved volunteers on
the property.
The BRIC Brothers have established a
one day retreat at Hidden Villa comprised
of reflection, community building, and farm
work, led by Hidden Villa’s Youth Development
team. Neel tells us, “The highlight of
our experience at Hidden Villa… has been
the one day retreat. The Youth Development
staff has been very creative and welcoming,
and the BRIC Brothers have learned a lot
from these retreats that they have been
able to take back on campus.”
Currently, the BRIC Brothers have
a committee working on Hidden Villa’s
upcoming Interfaith Forum, which will take
place in April 2013. The BRIC Brothers
believe the goal of Hidden Villa’s Interfaith
Forum has strong synergy with the goals
“to break down barriers by teaching others
to be welcoming and open-minded” in order
to bring out the best in people. “We are
excited to share our insights from different
faiths around the world.”
Hidden Villa would like to extend a huge
appreciation to the BRIC Brothers for their
incredibly commitment to volunteering and
contributing to the Hidden Villa community.
