STEWARDS OF THE LEGACY
Dear Friends,
Well the short days of winter are
quickly disappearing and we look
forward to the impending onset
of longer days and the return of
warmer and sunnier weather!
With summer now visible on the horizon, it’s time for us to
shift gears and embark upon the preparations for our upcoming
Summer Camp programs. Although the first day of Camp is still
a few months away (June 17th), many of this year’s sessions
filled in record time! It is a testament to the timeless value of
these programs that they have remained so popular and vital
since Josephine and Frank Duveneck first started them in 1945
and I look forward to seeing my own children return for their
6th and 10th consecutive year respectively! At the time of
writing, there are still a few spaces left for certain sessions, so
if you know of a child or teen who you feel would benefit from
our unique camp experience, please check with the Camp office
for availability.
I recently received some materials from the 1980’s about
Hidden Villa and Frank Duveneck in particular. While Frank
is often best regarded for the supportive role that he played in
the development of so many of Hidden Villa’s programs, I was
intrigued to read an interview with him from May 1983, where
he talks about his philosophy and goals in life. He ends the
interview by saying, “I hope that it (the land) can be kept the
way it is, so that you can go out at night and still see the stars. I
think I’m very fortunate that you young people are here that are
interested in keeping it that way.”
Thank you for your interest in Hidden Villa and for your
ongoing support of the work that we do. Frank and Josephine
Duveneck believed that they never really owned the lands
of Hidden Villa, but “simply held and took care of them”,
preserving them in perpetuity as a place for people to gather
to deepen their relationships with the natural world around
them and with one another. And here we are, several decades
later, continuing that legacy as we strive to fulfill our mission
to “inspire a just and sustainable future through our programs,
land and legacy.” Happy spring!
Sincerely,
Dear Hidden Villa Community,
As a Board member I feel a tremendous
responsibility to uphold the rich legacy of
the Duveneck family. Their lives provide
us with an inspiring model of what it
means to be stewards of the land and caring community
members working for equality and social justice for all
people.
Our Board is a diverse group of dedicated individuals
drawn to Hidden Villa for a variety of reasons - environmental
education, multicultural understanding,
youth development, land preservation, organic farming,
and so many more. While our specific interests and
backgrounds vary, we are all focused on furthering the
mission of inspiring a just and sustainable future so this
precious place is here for generations to come.
Our Strategic Plan guides the work of the organization.
As part of the Plan, we are evaluating our current
board structure and processes and exploring how to be
more effective. At our annual Board retreat in March, we
will consider ways to improve the Board’s governance
role, leadership and collaboration, as well as how each
of us can better connect to Hidden Villa’s programs.
Board members of this dynamic organization take our
job very seriously. We want to ensure that Hidden Villa
remains vibrant, focused on the future and on a solid
financial foundation. On behalf of the Hidden Villa
Board of Trustees, please accept my appreciation for
your generous support which enables us to keep this
amazing organization thriving well into the future.
Best Regards,
